Nobody has mentioned The Shape of Things yet. So I'll add that. Agree with Dancer in the Dark and Grave of the Fireflies.

And speaking of Giuseppe Tornatore films, The Star Maker was almost as depressing

Y Tu Mama Tambien:

Spoiler:
The ending when Tenoch and Julio meet in the diner for the first time since the trip, Tenoch tells him that Luisa died of cancer 30 days after they returned home. Then the narrator goes on to say that it will be the last time Tenoch and Julio will ever see each other again.

That was pretty damn depressing for such an upbeat movie.

Donnie Darko

As for Requiem For A Dream, I dont think the ending would be half as dramatic without the music that it has, But it really is depressing...

As was mentioned before, "On the Beach" will remove your will to live. An extremely well-crafted film, with characters that really suck you in....

Actually, I think "On the Beach" should only remove one's will to re-elect George Bush II.

I'm sure there's a long list, but IN AMERICA is the most depressing movie that I've seen recently.

Gorillas in the Mist - Very depressing movie that I seen, can't believe what these hunters are doing to the mountain gorillas.

Mask - Very sad at the end. Good performance by Cher and Eric Stoltz as Rocky.

The Grey Zone.

Also, though for different reasons, Phantom Menace.

So, what's with the six-month break in the thread?

On the Beach, both movie versions (I haven't read the book.)

The first version was mighty sad, but I found the second even worse. The whole 'Family Bed' thing and seing each person deal with their fate is very tough to watch (and I love the post-apoc genre.)

I'm too lazy to read this entire thread...

Has anyone mentioned MY LIFE yet with Michael Keaton and Nicole Kidman? God, that movie was so depressing I have never brought myself to watch it a second time. Good film, just very hard to sit through.
