What's the most depressing movie ever made?

I just came back from 21 GRAMS tonight. If I known it had been that disturbing/depressing I woudl have skipped it tonight. Great film, amazing film, but i've been having some rough times in my personal life right now, and the movie was almost unberable. I had to look away during some of the medical scenes. Not that it was gory, it was just so tramatic for the characters. No film has shook me up that much. It looked so real. SO vivd. Check it out if you can handle it.

Oh yeah, and whats the most depressing movies ever made IYO?

My top 3:

1. 21 Grams

2. the sweet hereafter

3. Schindler's list

Irreversible is near the top as well

Mr. Salty 01-17-04 11:23 PM

1. Armageddon
2. Requiem for a Dream
3. Yentl

Seven (Se7en?) is pretty sad. I totally agree with all of the other suggestions so far, except for Armageddon. I mean, it's depressing that it actually made money, so I guess it counts. :)

I think Dancer in the Dark is pretty high up there on the list of most depressing movies.

I don't know how many people will remember this film, but Testament is stillthe most depressing film that I have ever seen.

Testament is awesome. Along those lines, another great, depressing, post-nuclear film is Threads (probably even more depressing than Testament).

I wholly agree with you!

However, I've gotta check out some of the other titles to fulfill my masochistic instincts....

Jalizarin 01-18-04 02:58 AM

i thought Leaving Las Vegas and Slingblade were both horribly depressing. :(

TREX1993 01-18-04 03:01 AM

Requiem for a Dream
Irreversible
Schindler's List
American History X

And can I say that I was depressed at the end of Cast Away?!? I mean, yeah, you'd expect Helen Hunt to move on with her life, but the romantic idealist in me wanted/hoped that her character would have held out hope for his return all these years. It was kinda' depressing in that sense...

Ooh..that's a good one! I had forgotten about in on my list of depressing movies.

Giantrobo 01-18-04 03:23 AM

City of Angels :(
Dancer in the Dark

jaeufraser 01-18-04 04:41 AM

I'd go with Sweet Hereafter. When a movie starts with a busload of kids going into an icy lake, and only gets more depressing from that point on...yeah, rough movie. very good one though.

TCG 01-18-04 04:43 AM

Seven
Being John Malkovich
Full Metal Jacket
Glengarry Glen Ross

i dont know about the MOST depressing, but these are a few that depress me (at lteast at the end).

Granted, i've never seen Salo.

Star Wars Guy 01-18-04 07:06 AM

Less than Zero.

QuiGonJosh 01-18-04 07:11 AM

Requiem for a Dream is without a doubt the most frightening and depressing film I've ever seen...

Groucho 01-18-04 07:18 AM

I'm not sure why people are calling Schindler's List one of the "most depressing." Sure, there's a lot of depressing stuff, but the overall message is of inspiration and hope.

Overall, I didn't find The Sweet Hereafter all that depressing either.
