I laugh at movies when its appropriate(ie watching American Pie), however it's quickly becoming my pet peeve when people laugh for no reason at all. For example, when I went to go see ROTK a few weeks ago, this one person kept laughing out loud everytime Gollum made an appearance. It got so bad that people around this person told him to shutup.

The fact that you are unnable to laugh could be becouse you feel insecure. You don't want to draw attention to yourself. Or you might be afraid to show the people around you a more personal side. If you are able to laugh when you are alone, that might be the case. It's relly the same as with crying in public. You don't want people to see your emotions. You should consider talking to someone about it.

I've also heard that it is a natural reaction (one of a number of them) to illogical situations. That explains why very logically thinking people often don't have as much of a sense of humor . . . their tendancy to try to figure things out overrides their laughter instinct.

That's just what I've heard anyway . . .

I laugh so loud, you can hear me in the next screen. Yes, I'm a laugh out loud freak. It's a good thing I watched Dysfunctional Family at home, or else I would've gotten my ass kicked out.

I usually don't laugh while watching movies, not because I feel threatened, but because I don't find the humor funny. But while watching Shoalin Soccer, I did laugh a lot (an understatement).

i very rarely laugh at movies... mainly because Im not an inconsiderate jerk and I dont want to ruin other peoples move going experience. On a rare occassion, I'll let out a little chuckle if its the kind of comedy/funny moment that has the WHOLE theater rolling or something... but otherwise I stay pretty reserved.

I dont see how it is ruining a movie for others if you laugh at something you truly find funny. I mean have you ever noticed that when you see a comedy in a full theater that everyone is enjoying, that you tend to find it funnier than if you had viewed it alone? Laughter is usually a contagious thing, and unless someone is being an ass, I find it to be a very welcome and appropriate part of the movie going experience.

Being considerate is one thing, but derailing your own emotions to the point of not allowing yourself to laugh and fully enjoy the film is another.

I suggest you and Ryo see all comedies in a black movie theater from now on.

In my cultural antropology class we learned that laughing is learned, not inate. There were/are peoples who don't laugh. I believe when Europeans first came in contact with the Eskimoes, they didn't laugh.

But, I meant it more as... I think some cultures do laugh less. They are more reserved. I could be wrong there - but it seems to me that some cultures don't "laugh out loud" like Americans do.

Its not even that Im worried about their theatre going experience. The whole theatre could be cracking up and I cant manage to laugh. The not wanting to draw attention to myself would make sense but even if Im watching a movie or tv show alone I dont laugh.

it depends... i mean a really hardcore belly laugh from one guy in the entire theater is really annoying to me. maybe Im the only one. I had a guy like that in RotK sitting right behind me, he'd be laughing his AZZ off at anything even close to mildly amusing. pretty damn annoying.

I know lots of people are into that but Im really really not. Maybe its my natural revulsion to the mob mentality phenomenon, I dunno.

like i said, if the theater is rolling sometimes I let out a lil chuckle. I wouldnt call it "derailing your own emotions"... its not like laughter is a required result of an emotion or anything, u could just get the "big dumb smile" as one guy put it. One thing that does derail everything though is some idiot laughing for no real good reason.

I NEVER laugh at movies or TV shows either, whether out at the theatre or home alone. It doesn't mean I don't find it humorous -- it is just not a spontaneous reaction with me.

By the same token, I never scream when startled. My co-worker girls are always screaming at work -- like when someone scares them on purpose, or they almost walk into someone coming around the corner, etc. Again, I never do this, and certainly never at scary movies.

I laugh constantly. I love find TV shows and movies that will make me feel happy and laugh. I'm constantly searching for such outlets. Plus, I'm a huge fan of stand-up comedy. I can't imagine what life would be like not thinking 99% of things were funny. Hell, I'd rather be one of those people who laugh at things and are no good at being funny themselves than the person who doesn't even laugh.

You need to schedule an appointment w/ the rapist ASAP. You have major psychological problem. Seek help now.

So let me get this straight. You don't laugh on the spot of the funniest, but LOL all of a sudden afterward, ie, at the gas pump, supermarket checkout, at work, etc?

I don't neccesarily laugh at movies. Sure I laugh sometimes..but mostly I something is funny.

The weird thing is that I laugh when I get nervouse or there is a serious situation, which sometimes gets me in trouble.

Laughter is just a way to express amusement. As long as you are feeling amusement, I wouldn't worry too much about not expressing it externally.
