Does anyone else not laugh during movies?

This never really bothered me at first but now its beginning to worry me. I don't laugh at movies. Any movies. When I see comedies there are always lots of people cracking up during certain things and laughing out loud. The most I ever do is smile at a certain joke. Does anyone else not laugh at movies?

Maybe you should seek professional help?

I agree. I think this is odd, unless it's a cultural thing (laughing is culturally learned).

My problem is that I laugh at least half a beat quicker than most of the audience in attendance. I just usually get the humor a tad faster than the average movie goer.

The audience I was with during American Wedding all LTMFAO!

What about little babies laughing (I've seen it as early as less than 3 months old)?

Oh, and . . . yes, Ryo . . . you are very strange. ;)

Out of curiosity, do you laugh at other things in life? Jokes, tv shows, funny songs, people getting hit in the crotch, etc.?

Me007gold 01-03-04 10:36 PM

Jokes dont really make me laugh. Nor do tv shows or songs.

You sure? Smiling is a trait that expresses the same "feeling" throughout all cultures. I would assume that laughter, which seems to be one-upping a smile, would also be cross-cultural.

Well, I find humor in things, but I don't typically laugh; When I'm with a large crowd, though, the HERD mentality elicits laughter from me. I can be at home watching Withnail & I, which is HILARIOUS, and I really enjoy it and find it funny, but I barely crack a smile.

Then I'll have something which just slays me, and I'll bust a gut. It's like it wells up. Last time that happened was when I watched Coupling: "The Giggle Loop". Maybe it was because they were laughing, and laughter is contagious.

I laugh a lot at movies.

But sometimes, I like to start a laugh chorus at a movie theatre. It works like this: laugh once or twice at a line that is definitely NOT funny but sounds like it could be a reference to something, and then count the number of people who laugh with you at NOTHING.

I believe my personal best was 16, although that's disputed by my friend (with whom I compete for a laugh chorus) who said it was only 14 (thus not beating his confirmed 15 false laughs for a single film).

I too have difficulty laughing during movies, or almost anywhere else in life. When I do laugh, it usually feels hollow and forced.

I'm not exactly sure why.

Maybe cause you feel bad for keeping my soul?

Jackskeleton 01-04-04 03:06 AM

perhaps how your standards are. you find it amusing or entertaining, yet you lack the ability to show it in public. perhaps you do not want to make a scene? not sure. nothing all that bad. I would rather watch a funny film with you in the audiance then the cackling wench three rows behind me that could be heard for miles and laughs for a few minutes too long.

outcastja 01-04-04 04:15 AM

This reminds me of a Seinfeld episode.

Laughing rules. I can't imagine seeing a comedy and having no one laugh (assuming that it's a GOOD comedy, not a bad one).... I feel very sorry for those who can't just have a good, tear inducing laugh fit... good times.

I hate when people laugh at someone that isnt suppose to be funny just because say Adam Sandler or Jim Carrey maybe in the movie..... The truman Show and Punch Drunk Love come to mind

Troy Stiffler 01-04-04 10:51 AM

Did you sell your soul to Millhouse for $5?

RyoHazuki- Are you Japanese?

A friend whose sister lived in Japan for many years told me the Japanese love comedy films but they don't laugh in movie theaters because laughing in public is considered embarassing or dishonorable. Maybe you've been socialized to not laugh in public.

I have the opposite problem. I go see movies like Looney Tunes: Back in Action and I'm THE ONLY ONE LAUGHING.

daniel18 01-04-04 12:15 PM

Get out of Phoenix! Fast! Maybe that can help.

Burnt Alive 01-04-04 03:34 PM

The only time I've ever laughed during a movie was during Ghost Ship.
The end of the opening scene was the most (unintentionally) hilarious sequence I've ever seen captured on film. Terrible, terrible movie.....not as bad as LXG, though....

Come to think of it, I might have also chuckled at the Picadilly Circus scene in An American Werewolf In London. Now that's comedy!

Only if it's NOT FUNNY.

Actually, Laughing is not a Cultural thing.

I remember reading in some Psychology article that laughing had something to do with a lowered threat level. It is sort of meant as a system of letting others now that there is no harm in a situation and that guards can be dropped. Wish I could find the article, it explains it much better than I can. But seriously, if you have trouble laughing in front of others maybe you should "talk to someone"

My personal belief is laughter can be necessary to keeping ones sanity.

fumanstan 01-04-04 03:49 PM

If it's funny, laugh. There's no reason not too.

Kal-El 01-04-04 04:07 PM

I let it all out when I feel like it.

edytwinky 01-04-04 05:00 PM

Gotta laugh. It's the best thing to do. I love it!
