As for Sci-fi similar in tone, I thought Cypher was an effective thriller, as was Primer.

IMO overrated, but I still like it very much.
Similar to "Donnie Darko" and "Memento", I feel it's a good movie that's been lauded all out of proportion with regard to its actual intellectual heft, artistic merit, and cinematic quality. I don't want this to sound overly negative, but I found the film to be grappling with interesting issues, but without depth or breadth, and relying too much on some fairly hackneyed tropes. It's a very typically constructed narrative that reveals all on a single viewing, and doesn't provide much fodder for further contemplation. That said, I don't get the "slow, boring" criticisms. If anything, the film jettisons the opportunity to explore the issue in any great depth for some conventional sentimentalism vis "the romantic interest" and the sibling rivalry (also used metaphorically, but to much greater effect in "a.i."), and a couple of not-quite-suspenseful, utterly typical chase scenes. I've seen it a few times now, and am always left with the impression that it comes up lacking on every front. But I'm a picky mofo, and whenever I sense a pretence toward hifalutin' philosophizing and cinematic artfulness that doesn't quite pay off or devolves into bland conventionality, I'm right there with the criticizing.

Gattaca TV series in the works.

"a future-set one hour police procedural based on the Andrew Niccol-directed "Gattaca." Writer/producer Gil Grant, whose previous TV credits include "24" and "NCIS: Los Angeles," was named as the scribe.
I came up with a world which is populated with Valids and Invalids, the same premise [as the movie], but taken into a police department where we’re… integrating, using the analogy of the ‘60s Civil Rights struggle," Grant explained. In the movie, those born through natural means filled the blue collar ranks while their genetically superior brothers and sisters enjoyed a wealth of opportunities.
"Even though it’s technically illegal to discriminate against Invalids, just like in the ‘60s people did," Grant continued. "So it’s come to pass that [the government has] ordered the police department to hire their first token Invalid into the detective department. What we’re doing is we’re taking an Invalid and teaming him up with a Valid, a seasoned officer. You know, it’s oil and water."

Both very strong movies worth watching again a few times over. I loved them as much as the Truman Show, and I think the Truman Show was brilliant. When I first saw Gattica in the theater, I thought it was very good and the ending had a strong impact. It's one rare movie I can think of where nobody was really talking to each other as they left the theater. There was like this somber tone in the crowd.

Like everyone was saying 13 years ago, the movie was/is more underwatched than underrated. Most anyone who has seen it has liked it.

I thought it was okay. I remember thinking that it was kind of slow, with a dreary color pallet, and that the exciting new themes about breeding homo superior have been explored in written science fiction since the 1930s.
I really disliked the moral that even if you're inferior you can still win if you try harder. That only works in uncompetitive environments. There are lots of college basketball players who worked their asses off but didn't get into the NBA, and everyone who didn't make the cut to become an astronaut is still a high achiever.

As someone who is disabled this movie speaks volumes to me. It's one of my favorite films. In fact Gattaca is *easily* the best science fiction movie of the 1990s (sorry, The Matrix).

I also didn't see that as the moral ("even if you're inferior you can still win if you try harder."), but can see where the idea would stem from.

I love this film.
I work near the Marin Civic Center, where a lot of the exterior & interiors shots were filmed.

Great flicks. Never seen Abre Los Ojos, though. I did like Vanilla Sky.
