I liked it a lot, drop dead serious comedy if there ever was one

Not as much so as the trailer leads one to believe, but it isn't a drop dead serious war film (black/dark comedy if you will). The interaction between the two leads is humorous because it's amazing how much angry soldiers remind you of little kids. But yeah, I say it's worth a blind buy.

I rented it first and then bought it, but only after it sat on my to-buy list for several months. I don't know what it costs now but back then it was always one of the most expensive titles in the store. I finally bought it the first time Border's actually stickered it for under $20. Originally it was selling for more like $30.

I picked up a used copy of this one after renting it and loving it. It's a powerful black comedy that won the foreign film Oscar.

Another recommendation of another war story/black comedy with a love triangle twist is the new release The Cuckoo. Very well made and a solid making-of documentary with it.

I would highly recommend this as one of the very best movies about life during wartime.

Even though everyone mentions the darkly comic aspects, this movie still rang very true to life and realistic to me .. for *this* is how insanely messed up everything is.

Very good film! Great blind buy...although I don't think it should have beat Amelie as Best foreign film. But the truth is that both of these films should have captured Oscars that were awarded to other American films...
