ugh, not another Rob Cohen film...I'm sure he's a real swell guy personally but his movies are just terrible. Like a previous poster said, worse than Sommers.

I like "The Mummy". Its a fun adventure movie that has the perfect amount of silly humor. Which is where most of it's charm comes from.

"The Mummy Returns" was less of an adventure and more "action" but it was still OK, not as fun as the 1st, but OK.

But I can't see a reason for a third movie.

We've fallen in love with the characters and their environment/condition and don't want their story to be over.

I can't imagine that after The Mummy Returns, there's too many good ideas left in that well. And with Rob Cohen at the helm, meh.

Rob Cohen is one of the worst hacks working today...Stealth was one of the worst movies I have ever seen... in fact, other than The Fast & The Furious and Dragonheart, I can't think of a single movie he's been involved with that didn't suck entirely. I don't think Sommers is anything special, but with Mummy Returns, he did a bang up job striking the right tone (which he didn't manage to do with Van Helsing) so I definitely would have been in if Sommers had been directing this...but if Cohen helms it, I'll probably skip it (unless the trailer or reviews grab me....and even then, I'll have to leave my expectations at the door)....

I wonder why Sommers is not coming back. Prior engagement? Not interested?

I dig both Mummy films-- never saw Scorpion King, nor do I care to-- but I hear the third is a re-imagining of the two, not so much a sequel to them. Not sure what that means, but as long as the key cast returns, I'll be happy to see it. I love the characters, and look forward to seeing them in one more adventure. Who knows what story they'll dream up, but I'm game.

Perhaps I'm in the minority, but this is great. Loved Fockers, and totally support a continuation of the story.

I like looking at Rachel Weisz as much as the next guy, but I'm not really sure how much fun it's going to be fighting Imhotep a *3RD* time around.

"The Mummy Returns" had to cut out a lot of the "adventure" from the first movie because we didn't have see Imhotep collecting parts to get his human form...because we knew he had to do that from the first movie.

Besides, "Returns" was borderline treading on "almost exactly the same as the 1st movie", and this is coming from someone who likes the movies.

Rob Cohen to Direct The Mummy 3?

Rob Cohen is in talks with Universal Pictures to direct the third installment of "The Mummy" franchise. The film, targeted for a 2008 release, was written by "Smallville" creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar.

Though no deals are in place for franchise stars Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz to return, both actors have had discussions about reprising their roles.

Stephen Sommers helmed the first two "Mummy" installments which after being released in 1999 and 2001 earned a combined worldwide gross of $849 million.

Producing the third film are Sommers and Bob Ducsay through the Sommers Co. as well as Sean Daniel and Jim Jacks via the Sean Daniel Co.

Cohen has directed two previous films for Universal, including The Fast and the Furious and The Skulls. He has also directed XXX for Revolution and Stealth for Sony.

In addition to a third "Mummy," the studio has also been keen to develop Meet the Little Focker and a remake of the The Wolf Man and last year it purchased Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy 2: The Golden Army out of turnaround from Sony and Revolution

The one bright side... at least the CGI effects should be a bit better. Sommers has possibly the worst judgment in letting bad CGI shots go through of any director working with huge budgets (huge enough that they can afford to do them right).

Some of the CGI was good in "Returns"....then there was the Scorpion King.

The Ancient Egyptian cityscapes were good.

And I always thought of Stephan Sommers as a B-movie director that somehow ended up with a huge budget for a B-movie. But that b-movie feel is what I like about "The Mummy" the most.

I thought The Mummy Returns was much better than the original: more humour, better dialogue, the characters are married so the "cutes" are out of their relationship, the kid was interesting and the film had important things to say about feminism and moral and spiritual values. I also adore Brendan Fraser and would watch him in an ode to drying paint. Having said this, I am conscious that the director has his limitations - he directed Van Helsing, which is an abomination, after all - but going from Sommers to Cohen is like jumping from the frying pan into the fire. Maybe, just maybe, the principals, Brendan and Rachel, can use their star power to salvage this film by having control of the script for maybe less money.

Besides, isn't Rob Cohen

just another alias for porno star Rod Fontana?

I'm not sure I can say The Mummy Returns is better than The Mummy-- I love them both-- but I do appreciate how the relationships between the principals is solidified. Rick and Evelyn are married, so, as you point out, they are no longer dancing around their feelings. And I dig Ardeth Bay, so watching him fight alongside them, rather than almost against them, is a great touch.

Same with Beverly Hills Cop II, though I definitely like the original more in that case. Taggart and Rosewood are no longer at odds with Foley, and are working with him to solve a case. I like that camaraderie.

Having said this, I am conscious that the director has his limitations - he directed Van Helsing, which is an abomination, after all...
Only scene for which I care is early on, between Van Helsing and Mr. Hyde. If the rest of the movie had been as good, it could have been great.

I've not seen any of the movies that Cohen has made, so I don't know either way what kind of move this might mean. Hopefully, if he sticks to the characters as they have been developed over the past two films, this second sequel-- or re-imagining, or whatever the hell it's going to be-- will come through successfully.

My impression of Van Helsing (from another thread):

I don't know. I saw this twice, once on a DVD rental and once on TV. Between the omnipresent CGI, the murky, claustrophobic skies, the fish-eye-on-a-string photography, the industrial-grade art direction, the orgy of gratuitous and pneumatic cleavage, the videogame-type action violence, the comicbook disregard for realism and historical fact, the lack of character development, the fake tacked-on bargain-basement mysticism, the unrelenting EXTREMELY LOUD soundtrack, the needlessly convoluted recycling of public domain horror film icons, the lack of humour, the pervasive "more is more" aesthetic, and the simple callousness of borrowing the title from a famous Dracula character and then making the hero the younger brother of the famous vampire hunter for purely copyright reasons, I needed a vomit bucket both times. As the girl in Married With Children used to say: "The mind wobbles."
I'm no Rob Cohen specialist, but from what I've seen, his films are all box-office macho swagger and no substance.

On the plus side, he's not a CGI junkie (except for Dragonheart). On the negative side, this is the synopsis of his latest project, King of the Nudies (2007):

The story of a filmmaker and his centerfold wife as they work together to create themselves and their movies. Based on the biography of Russ Meyer, who created such cult favorites as "The Immoral Mr. Teas", "Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens" and "Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!"
... so maybe the Rod Fontana comparison is not so far off, after all!

I liked DRAGON. But the rest of his work is disgraceful.

I liked Rob Cohen's directorial effort on The Fast and the Furious.
However, I liked John Singleton's and Justin Lin's efforts on the sequels more.

I thought xXx could've been a better movie if they kept to practical stunts like the 007 flicks (minus Die Another Day) and not made it a CGI bonanza.

Those are the only two decent things I can say about Cohen. However, it's a lot more than I can say about Sommers.

ComingSoon.net has reported further details. The story will involve Rick and Evie's son, now grown up. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are in talks; no word on John Hannah or Oded Fehr. And there will be a new mummy.

Jet Li want his 'Mummy'?

I dig martial arts movies much like most guys out there and so of course I am a fan of Jet Li. After hearing this latest idea though I have no idea what's going on anymore.

Mania is reporting that Jet Li is in negotiations to join the upcoming Universal sequel to The Mummy and The Mummy 2. We are also happy to announce that the title for the upcoming film is tentatively set as 'Mummy: Curse of the Dragon'.

The plot for the film, which is being kept under wraps for the most part, seems to involve Brendan Fraiser's character, his son, and a brand new Mummy (Li?). Rachel Weisz is also expected to reprise her role.

Rob Cohen is directing the film for the studio which is aiming for a 2008 release.

This of course is just a rumor right now, but Jet Li as a Mummy? it could happen I guess, but what the hell is next Chow Yun Fat as a Pirate? oh wait...

Please let that be some silly rumour because that sounds worse than the fact that Rob Cohen is directing.
