I saw this with a respectful audience. Silence was golden. As for shocking...well, I've been to many current horror films and nobody screams anymore.
ALIEN, however, does everything right. The new films...don't.

I saw the film yesterday afternoon at a local theater. What I thought was cool is that the theater took one of their 35mm prints and blew it up to play on their IMAX screen. Since Vegas doesn't have DLP anymore
, I decided this would be an awesome way to see Alien in theaters. I was going to see it anyway, but to see it on a 7-story screen is an even cooler way to see it.
The theater has around 200 seats and the 12:00pm showing had maybe around 30-35 people. Most of the people were quiet during the film, but this family consisting of five people (overweight white trash who brought their little five year old kid to the movie) decided to laugh during almost every "scary" moment of the film. Very disrespectful and distracting. Thankfully they were in the back of the theater and I was closer up to the front, so I drained out their voices half way into the movie (thanks IMAX speaker set-up).
I'm just happy that it was just one family of jerk-offs in the theater and not a whole group of "smartass" teenagers (you know, the ones who think they're so cool and smart, but are really just dumbasses) laughing and having their own commentary session during The Exorcist: The Version You've Never Seen Before.
One of the best theatrical experiences I've had was when a group of my friends and I saw Cabin Fever opening night. It's great when the entire theater is screaming, jumping in their seats, and laughing during the entire film.
But I did get to see a good friend of mine jump ten feet out of his seat during Alien yesterday during the scene where
My friend has never seen the film before, so he didn't see that coming.

I saw it last night, with a friend who was seeing it for the first time.
Don't get why people are bitching about the soundmix. Yet it was not 5.1,but more like Dolby Surround coming from the front few speakers. Yet the volume was up loud as hell & it was VERY creepy & full of atmosphere.
Pretty cool to see in theaters. The audience was just under 20 or less. Pretty respectful(ie-quiet),not sure if all liked the film or not. There was one young couple around my age. The woman may have been bored(yet she did jump a couple times). My friend thought the film was boring in parts, but overall, pretty good. He had never seen any of the film before. I know he will like Aliens more for being an action film. Thats just the kind of person he is.
