The Lion King - wow.

I saw it on the theater and remembered it as okay - nothing I particularly wanted to see again but nothing that bad either - a good flick. But from reading on Amazon all the raves, I got curious. I got the giftset since I got Snow White and I want to get all the Platinums.

I kept telling my sister that it seemed like a movie with many different levels - she and my mom still believe it's a kid's movie and roll their eyes when I talk about the subtle jokes and references.

All I gotta say is wow. I'm at the part where Scar asks the hyenas to kill Mufasa and it is such an awesome film. The hyenas marching and Scar on that rock just screams "Nazi reference."

My favorite line:
"What are you doing?" (Nonchalantaly) "Pouncing."

This is such a great masterpiece. I'll want to see it over and over again. My breath caught at The Circle of Life scene at the beginning.

Did you ever wonder about this - if Mufasa had treated the hyenas better would they have revolted? It gives credence to "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer." Yes they were creeps but they were creeps in numbers - maybe that was Mufasa's mistake. Scar is right about that - Mufasa is all brawn but not too much in the strategic planning department.

yeah whatever, ever since Di$ney and the evil MPAA decided to censor the word "sex" out and add some stupid 30 second song it killed it for me. Not to mention the gators. Has Di$n3y no shame?

The original version doesn't have the song Don't know if they edited SFX on that one too. What's wrong with the gators? They were pretty

Just to clarify the DVD comes with both the new and original version. I believe the original version is the theatrical version untouched (I know for sure the new song is not in the original version).

Yeah, I apologize for veering off into Class316 ramblings..

ANYways...the wildebeest scene STILL gets me...

I'm still upset that there wasn't an isolated score. Zimmer's music [particularly during that scene] kicks much ass..

No man its like Rage said, the little Simba is innocence, and the stampede is the MPAA trying to ruin our right to see gobbs of blood so they make directors change it to black and white. And thats how the MPAA wants us to see things..black...and white. DOWN WITH CENSORSHIP..and anime because dat shizz is whack y0.

Jesus Christ, is it possible to keep any thread even remotely on topic these days? I keep feeling like I drifted into Other.

Disney threads all lead to censorship and the eventual abusing of the dollar symbol key.

I haven't seen it yet. Don't know why. I guess I'll check it out.
Should I watch the new extended version or the original?

I love this movie. I bought it and planned a popcorn night with my kids, and I was shocked to discover they hadn't seen it yet (they are 11 and 8, and I don't know why I was shocked because I should have watched it with them long ago). So last Friday night, just before starting the movie my girlfriends brother (Otters may remember him from my various rants) comes over and I invite him to stay and watch it.
"No way, man" he says, "That movie is racist."
???? I'm shocked, I haven't seen it in like 10 years but I can't conceive of someone thinking this. So of course I ask why he thinks that. "Because they don't show any black African natives" he answers.
????? I'm struck dumb. I try to explain that there are no people AT ALL in the movie (I mean I guess I could see his point if the movie was filled with happy white people dancing around the savanna) it is a movie about talking animals. I also try to point out that many of the voice actors are black but he continued to insist that The Lion King is racist and refused to be in the house if it was going to be played.
To wrap it up: he left, we watched the movie, my kids loved it (actually applauding at points) and I felt a little silly (and slightly soiled) because I actually kept a skeptical eye open for racism. I didn't see it.
So, is my gf's brother a total nut, or are there actually people out there who think this movie is racist? He may have the reasons why wrong (he tends to blindly regurgitate whatever his professors say, without thinking it through) but he tends to be in step with what ever fringe groups are ranting about.

I was always amazed at the first spoken line in the movie:

Scar: "Life's not fair, is it?"

Pretty heavy way to start a Disney animated film.

Also, when we first saw it in the theater, the first thing my girlfriend (at the time) said was "I can't believe Disney made a movie about fratricide."

I've heard a slight argument about racism in the movie over how Scar/Hyenas are "darker" colored. Forgot where i read that though. His reasoning is just stupid.

The movie is basically a wild animal take on MacBeth, with singing.

Still, perhaps the best Disney animated feature (I don't consider Pixar movies to be animated) ever. Everything after has been abysmal.

... and Hamlet! (dead father, killed by uncle, appears as a ghost, the prince is unsure of what he should do, two merry friends, one best friends who acts as a foil, the king's counselor is a Polonius figure, etc).

Still, a brillinat, brilliant film. Jeremy Irons' Scar is possibly the most evil Disney character, outdoing even George Sanders' Shere Khan. He's sarcastic, dismissive and full of hatred.

The delivery of some of the lines... cool, dry... you'd hate it if this guy was real.

"Kill him."

"Life's... not fair, is it?"

He also has the best song in the film - one that takes shots from Triumph Of The Will, with lights into the sky and goosestepping armies of hyenas rallying by an orating Scar. This is a film just for kids? Hardly.

Also - that "Morning Report" is the worst Disney song ever. Thankfully, it's also the shortest...

The obvious similarities to/ripoffs of Tezuka's "Kimba, the White Lion" sories are well known at this point. The greatness of The Lion King does not diminish because of it.
