I saw E.T. the Extra Terrestrial for the first time last night
 

Seriously. I bought the limited edition 2 disc set as a blind buy because the movie is supposed to be a classic (let's not argue semantics here about the definition of "classic").

Anyway, I thought it was a really good movie and that the cast did a really good job--especially Henry Thomas as Elliott and Drew Barrymore as Gertie.

I know that some people here probably don't think the movie stands the test of time, but as a first time viewer, I liked it a lot. By the way, I watched the original theatrical release.

I also watched many of the special features and thought they were really good too. I especially liked the cast interview and was blown away by seeing John Williams conduct a live orchestra during the 2002 premiere.

Anyway, welcome to last year. Or even 20 years ago. :D

No, but it was pretty emotional. Henry Thomas and Drew Barrymore were REALLY good. Child actors really amaze me.

When I was watching the special features, they showed a clip of Henry Thomas' audition tape. Steven Spielberg prepped him by saying that these scientists wanted to take away this alien friend of his and that in the scene, do whatever it takes to not let them take the alien away. So Henry Thomas says you can't take him away and all that stuff and starts crying. I was like, WOW.

That audition tape is crazy. I can say that I honestly couldn't do what Spielberg was doing. If I gave a kid his motivation and he started to break down like that I would have to call cut. I would feel awful for making a 9 year old go to pieces like that. Somehow with the kid it's more "real" than with an adult, who you know is acting.

Up until they showed it on Sci-Fi a week or so ago, my girlfriend had not watched it, and in fact refused to watch it. She gave in and watched the ending with me.

I saw it for the first time when it was released on DVD (I got the giftset).

I saw Star Wars (all three of them) for the first time around 1995-1996.

I have yet to see Jaws.

Heck right now I'm watching LOTR: TTT for the first time :D

I wept at the moment when E.T. says "I'll be right here" and touches Elliots forehead.

Spielberg also made these adventure flicks called Indiana Jones. You might wanna check them out.

As well as Close Encounters...

You guys aren't going to believe me, but I've never seen any of the Indiana Jones movies and I've never seen Close Encounters either. I swear.

i was even luckier by seeing the star wars trilogy and NOT knowing the ending of any of the movies at all.

I say yes, not that I'm being impartial, but it's still full of suspense.

By the way, my brother refused to wade in the ocean after seeing Jaws. But then, he refused to get into elevators after seeing Earthquake.

So you'd never seen ET... still haven't seen the Indy flicks, Jaws or Close Encounters... obviously not a huge Spielberg fan... but you really owe it to yourself to do the following...

1. run out right now and BUY Jaws (widescreen) and Close Encounters (2 disc SE)

2. Watch each film twice...you'll want to watch them more than that, but limit yourself to twice for now...so you can take time to realize how ****ing awesome they are.

3. On Oct. 21 go buy the Indy Trilogy on DVD... follow step 2 again.

4. Finally you can go back to watching whatever movies you've been watching for the last decade...although now that you've seen some of the most entertaining movies ever made, you might not be satisfied with modern movies ever again.

But seriously, SEE THESE MOVIES... I always am in disbelief when I hear that people haven't seen these flicks... they are THAT GOOD...people haven't been lying to you...they are MUST SEE flicks...

sorry...a HUGE Spielberg fan....the above mentioned flicks are the reason I'm a film student who hopes to one day make movies...

I hear Star Wars is pretty good too.

My three year-old niece loves it, even though she is always asking, "What E.T. doing?". When I answer she asks, "Why?". But this morning was the best - she said, "E.T go Home Depot." :lol: Little kids kill me.

I love this movie, and obviously I think it has held up over time.

I saw it in the theates IN HAWAII. You need to get out more and stop watching pr0n. :p

Agreed. Dont see ANY movies until you see the above mentioned. Trust me.
