What movie(s) proves that you can make a sequel to anything?

I'm going to be totally radical here and freak everyne out -- I think "Evil Dead II" is a totally uneeded sequel. However, it's also a great movie and IMHO better than "Evil Dead 1." But basically, it's a remake of the first one, just with better production and more comedy! I've never even been able to figure out the continuity between ED1 and ED2, but I think that's part of the "thing." So basically I'm saying if you're talking sequels that weren't needed due to the plot of the first one, ED2 would have to be high on my list. It still kicks ass though.

I AM IN SHOCK that no one has mentioned:

Anyone remotely associated with making a Wizard of Oz II should be dealt with in the strongest means humanly possible.

I'd throw in The Evening Star as a wholely unecessary sequel. I'll bring it up because I had to watch it. Terms of Endearment = decent movie, it's sequel = utter trash.

If you laugh when you see Airport, you have GOT to see Zero Hour!, which was the film that was the ENTIRE bases of Airplane.
In fact, the guys (ZAZ) had to buy the rights to the film in order to make Airplane! (as you probably already know, they discuss Zero HOur! extensively on the commentary to Airplane!).
Imagine Airplane!, but played perfectly straight as a serious drama, in black and white, in 1957 with Sterling Hayden (Dr. Strangelove) and Dana Andrews (Airport '75).
I hope one day Zero Hour makes it to DVD (maybe with an Airplane 2 disc SE one day). It is truly a must see for an Airplane! lover.

I am still regretting not knowing that this movie played back to back with "Airplane!" on AMC (i think) a few months ago. I really have got to see this Zero Hour! movie....its like a quest in life.

I can't help but laugh when Airplane! is on because of a conversation at work some years ago. Airplane! was on and a co-worker said she had never seen the movie to which one of the mangers replied.
"You've never seen Airplane? What are you, a communist?"

Some of my favorites:
When A Stranger Calls Back
Sometimes They Come Back Again
Really, you couldn't make up better sequel titles. I'm still waiting for:
Casblanca II
The Return Of The Return Of The King
Son Of Pulp Fiction

L. Frank Baum wrote 14 Oz books and Return to Oz is based on the second (The Marvelous Land of Oz) and the third (Ozma of Oz). Plus it's far more faithful to Baum than the original. Also, I think it is quite good and enormously underrated.
Anyway, I consider Return to be more an adaptation of those Oz books than a sequel to the 1939 film version of The Wizard of Oz.

How about Highlander? For God's sake, they say "There can be only one" about a million times in the film...and then there is only one! That's pretty much it!
I love the original, but there was no need for a sequel.

Definitely Star Wars Episodes I and II. It proves that me that as long as you have eye-candy and a popular franchise's name behind your movie, you could make hundreds of millions of dollars.

If ED2 was just a remake of ED1, where was Henrietta in ED1, where was the Chainsaw hand? Where was the portal to the past? Where were the other characters? Where was the hilarious scene with the laughing furniture? They weren't there, because Evil Dead 2 wasn't a remake.
I agree with Raimi when I say you can lop off the beginning of ED2, and Army of Darkness to make one 5 hour movie. Granted there are many stylistic differences, but it still follows Ash all the way through his story.

Halloween III proves that you can make a movie that doesn't have anything in common with the movie (or in this case movies) it is suppoed to be a sequel to...except for the name.

It is the only of the Halloween series that I have ZERO desire to own. Completely pointless.
Regarding RTO, I realize that there was more faithfulness to the book in RTO. That is not what I was referring to. WOO is such a part of true "epic" Americana, that making a sequal to it just seems, to me anyway, disrespectful. There are just some films that are best left alone.
Regarding Airplane and Zero Hour, you are correct. It played on AMC and TCM at different points. I do believe it is a public domain film at this point (but I could be wrong), so you might be able to find someone selling it on VHS if you look good.
Good luck!

"The first thing required for the machine," said he, "is a body big enough to carry the entire party. This sofa is the biggest thing we have, and might be used for a body. But, should the machine ever tip sideways, we would all slide off and fall to the ground."
"Why not use two sofas?" asked Tip. "There's another one just like this down stairs."
The two sofas were now bound firmly together with ropes and clothes-lines, and then Nick Chopper fastened the Gump's head to one end.
"These great palm-leaves, for which I have endangered my life seven times, must serve us as wings."
So he fastened the palm-leaves to the sofas, two on each side.
"Stop a moment!" exclaimed Jack." Are you not going to use my broom?"
"What for?" asked the Scarecrow.
"Why, it can be fastened to the back end for a tail," answered the Pumpkinhead. "Surely you would not call the Thing complete without a tail."
