Yeah, kind of a letdown. Rodriguez went for the epic thing by adding all those characters and story, but he forgot what made the first 2 films fun. They were just simple tales of a man who just happened to kick ass really well.
At least 2 or 3 characters could have been done away with, this film should have been more linear and exciting. Instead it was exposition city. Blah, Blah, Blah... Who cares about the silly revolution. If a grand story is going to be told, IT SHOULD BE TOLD RIGHT. Not in a mariachi film. Not with rodriguez's poor editing style.
Robbie is more robot then leone.
The film would have garnered a better grade for me had:
Enrique got his face blown off.
What was up with
What an opportunity missed.
I give it a B- (only because depp & bandares made the thing fun to watch)

You know what got me the most.. the lack of Guitar case use by the Mariachis? a flame thrower and a romote control bomb? uh... huh? and "El" had little screen time with the tools he promised not to use again and the other two's case was just a little lacking. I see no point int he romote control bomb.. I guess we have been given a chain gun guitar case and a rocket laucher.. so what else can we look forward as original? I dunno.

Should have made the part 3 that is mentioned above. The backstory for this movie. Would have been huge.

I think that just shows movie reviews are opinion based and should be taken with a grain of salt. I put little to no stock in reviews and make my own decisions on whether I like a movie or not.

Count me in on the "very disapointed" list. One of the things that bothered me most was was the same thing that bothered me most about Alien 3 - Killing off the characters you love from the previous movie right away. I mean, Antonio and Salma Hayek spend the entire ending of Desperado on the run from the bad guys, and they end up living and driving off into the sunset. And Then as soon as the sequel starts BAM, she's dead. Honestly, if Salma Hayek did not have a lot of time in her schedule to be in this movie much, then they should have either found another actress to play her part or at least written her character out in a way that is better than just killing her off.
Like others have said, I found it to be confusing, with too many characters (NONE of which were developed). Johnny Depp was cool, but having Willem Dafoe
was kinda silly, and him suddenly
Rodriguez's last 3 films (SK2, 3, and this) have been disapointing to me, which is too bad because I love El Mariachi, Desperado, and FDTD.
Oh yea, I also thought it was stupid that the people CALLED him "El"... who would really do that?
And the "Mexican't" line had me laugh out loud in the theater at how lame it was.

I'm being nitpicky here...but:
Actually, as far as we knew, she wasn't...it wasn't until the middle of the movie does it become apparent what happened to her... It bothered me that she didn't have a big role in the flick, but perhaps El is destined to be alone...
Well, with that piano teacher and Rourke's dialogue to Blades, I think it was already established that Dafoe was a sick bastard. As for the spoiler, well, perhaps he stopped to pick it up before heading for the center of town...
Um...that was the point...
And Then as soon as the sequel starts BAM, she's dead.

i am not disapointed with this movie because it is a sequel and we should alwasy remember not to get our hopes up when it comes to sequels.
Johnny depp really did nothing for me in this movie. I really displike his performance in this movie. I find my self asking my self at times in this movie, what is he doing in this movie!!!
he doesn't for once second sell me into him being a CIA man. Mickey Rourke was good in this movie for a change as he almost alwasy can't really act and now that his looks are gone it is harder to like him.
The other things that bugged me about this movie was the editing, two storys sorta cut and pasted together, sorta makes the movie a little hard to understand, Robert Rodriguez sorta got a deal on the last bond movie's script and made it into El Mariachi. some what feels like that eh.
when I see a movie like this that doens't really make sense I start to blame the editing because often what happens is the director shoots too much and has to cut parts out of the movie shorter, often the clue to this happening is the story line doesn't really work because parts are missing. can someone smell directors cut version coming very soon.

On the subject of dyslexic splelling:
Save the drama for yo mamma!
Now about the movie... (is that what this thread's about? oh yeah.)
Count me in the 'had a good time but still felt let down' camp. I literally had to force myself NOT to be distracted by the scattered plot. The first thing I said to my buddy I saw the film with was that, I'm glad there are filmmakers who think outside the studio box, but sometimes you gotta figure that there are film schools for a reason. I have not read a post on this thread criticising the plot holes that I did not agree with, but I find myself wanting against reflex to really find the positive aspects in the film...
While I liked the action as a whole, the pace did especially seem like it was struggling (akin to a straight-to-video action flick) when it cut back to the Mexican revolution occurring in the streets.

I am writing a review and want to include this quote, but I'm drawing a blank on how it ends. So can anyone recall how the Depp quote goes when he's sitting at the diner with Cheech Marin, I believe it starts with," this pork is so good I'm going to shoot the chef...," thats all I can remember, so thank you for anyone who can help me on this.

Sands: Nice tune
El: Something my brother taught me. I killed him
Sands: Yes, I was prevy to that information. How charming. Look El, if I may call you that. I've been doing a little snooping and it seems that the cartels have quiet a price on your head. Wouldn't want to be you. Tell me, is there anyone who doesn't want you dead?
EL: You tell me
Sands: I need you to kill a man.El, you really must try this because it's.... puerco belpeal(sp). It's a slow roasted pork. Nothing fancy just happens to be my favorite. And I order it with a tequilla and lime at every dive I go to in this country. and honestly, that is the best it's ever been anywhere. infact it's too good. it is so good that when I'm finished with it. I'll pay my check, walk straight into the kitcehn and shoot the cook, cause that is what I do. I restore the balance to this country. And that is what I would like from you right now, to help me keep the balance by pulling the trigger.
EL: Do you want me to shoot the cook?
Sands: No, I'll shoot the cook, My cars parked out back anyway. You, will kill marquez. DO You remember General Marquez? He is being paid by the Brillo cartel to kill the president in an attempted cudita
EL: Attempted.
Sands: Oh no no no, the president will be killed because he is that piece of good pork that needs to be balanced out. I say attempted because we don't want marquez taking power. I need you to put the hurt on marquez after he has killed the president. savy?
El: So why me?
Sands: Well, because you have nothing to live for. and in a way you are already dead and marquez is the man who killed you. So, why not return the favor? Go to the church, meet with an associate of mine named salamain at three o clock and I will contact you afterwards if we have a deal.
El eats the pork. walks away.
Sands: Was I right?
El spits it out
Sands: I Guess not

Yep that was El he was talking to. Telling him he is there to put everything in balance.
