I just saw it this weekend and was pleasantly suprised. I wasn't expecting much so that made it all the better. I dont' think you needed to see the porn career or the childhood. I'm glad they didn't rely on the fact that he was a porn star.

I agree, I was also pleasantly surprised. Although Val is great here, his physical appearance pulled me out of the flick several times. I kept thinking of the last half of 'The Doors".
Dafoe might have been a better choice.

Same here. I was not expecting much as it generally received negative reviews upon it's release, but it wasn't bad at all. The documentary was well done too.

I saw it this weekend and thought it was great. I read the bad reviews and have to disagree with most of them. I agree with the comment of Kilmer pulling me out of the role momentarily.

Does this role put Val in the lead for playing the most real characters, or the most 20th century real characters?

Superb film. Bought it blind and have watched it three times. The acting is first rate all around(with the exception of a badly butchered cameo by Princess Leia). Josh Lucas blew me away.

I thought it was ok. I actually liked the Johnny Wad doc on disc 2 better though.
Val Kilmer nailed the role IMHO.

The WADD doc was interesting

The movie was good too. It says it's about the Wonderland murders, not about John Holmes specifically.

Great cast of supporting players too.

Is the Wonderland dvd two discs or one? I'm hearing a lot about this Johnny Wad documentary and does it come with the dvd? I am interested in renting this film and hopefully Blockbuster will carry it.

I rented it and watched the film twice and the doc once.

The docu is great but the film is awfully entertaining.

I'm not a big Val Kilmer fan but he did one hell of a job here.

Also, you don't think once of "Friends" when you see and hear Lisa Kudrow as Holmes' first wife.

I dunno... I kind of liked Wonderland.

As a film, it wasn't good, but if you look at it as the fictualization of a true story, kind of like what you'd see on Court TV or the Biography Channel, it was good. Not great, not bad, but good.

I'll tell you what I was really impressed with, the 2nd DVD contains a documentary called "Wadd", the life of John Holmes. It is the biography of Holmes, as told by his ex wives, ex-mistress, ex movie co-stars, etc. Plus it tells what happened at Wonderland and confirms that Holmes was, in fact, present (and confessed to his first wife). Yeah, Holmes was an interesting guy. The only thing I don't like about him is that after he found out he had AIDS, he continued to have unprotected sex in movies without telling his partners that he was infected. He really just didn't care, he assumed everybody was going to get it anyway (for what it's worth, per his 2nd wife, apparently nobody contracted HIV from him). Also, his dying of AIDS brought about mandatory testing within the industry.

Anyway, Wonderland is worth a rental. And if you do rent it, be sure to watch the bonus DVD, "Wadd" ("Johnny Wadd" was a recurring character of his).
