The main character, Jess, is an Indian girl (as in, her parents are from India) living in a London suburb. She is obsessed with a soccer player named David Beckham, who is the most popular player in England. She also likes playing soccer, much to the dismay of her traditional parents who prefer that she find a nice boy and get married. Finally, she gets the courage to join a semi-pro girls' team, though she hides it from her parents. After sneaking around a for a while to play games, eventually she realizes that she has to come clean with her parents if she wants to pursue her dream of playing in the women's pro league in the US. But how oh how can she convince her parents to let her follow her heart??

Yeah, it sounds a bit corny. Its not going to be an Oscar-contender, but its a nice feel-good movie, and I think most people would like it. Maybe I'm a bit partial because I am myself Indian, but most of my non-Indian friends liked it too. Granted, we're all fans of soccer, but I think that even if you're not, you'll enjoy the film.

Since I heard they changed the word football to soccer for american audiences, for those that have seen the english and american versions, is the dubbing bad or not?

Hmm, when I watched it here, they still said "football". I can't imagine they'd think Americans are really that dumb that they couldn't figure out what the characters were talking about. Is it confirmed that they changed it in the re-release?

Bend it Like Bechkam is very overrated... the parents/soccer angle was decent, but thelove stories were downright awful and unnecessary. And wayyyy too many stupid camera tricks. If they had stopped the mvoie halfway through and just tacked on some of the ending, it would have been better off.

I really liked it. Saw it today in the "luxury" theater at the local theater. Generally the audience liked it. My favorite bit was the whole thing with one of the mothers thinking her daughter was lesbian.
