Is "Beckham" getting re-release?

There's an ad currently on rottentomatoes.com that says: "Bend It Like Beckham" in theatres nationwide August 1st. Huh!? It's still playing at about a half dozen theatres right now in my city. Five months and counting.

RichC2 07-28-03 08:52 PM

There are ads on TV right now for it, "This Friday, Everywhere" so yeah, I think it's a re-release. 1) It's a better time of the summer for a flick like that and 2) capitalize on Keira Knightley (The ad specifically says "Starring Pirates of the Caribbean's Keira Knightley")

lesterlong 07-28-03 09:56 PM

I saw the commercial and thought it was for the DVD. Will these ads for this movie ever end?

Jackskeleton 07-28-03 10:02 PM

It's simple marketing on Keira's fame. simple as that.

joeydaninja 07-28-03 10:42 PM

yup, that's what i thought. Hope it succeeds.

Well, except for the small print ad in the Washington Post Weekend section (on Fridays), I haven't seen a commercial or ad for this film in months. However, people love this film. I think it's pretty amazing that it's still going strong after five months. And now getting a re-release. It certainly deserves it. Go Beckham go!

fumanstan 07-28-03 11:25 PM

I haven't seen or heard any ads recently about the movie or the dvd. No big loss for me since i saw it and didn't think much of it at all. But capitalizing on Keira sounds like a good idea :)

I can think of a dozen good reasons to go see this movie, and Kiera Knightley isn't any of them. However, you could do a lot worse.

(I think Parminder Nagra is hotter, anyhow...) :D

I remember seeing the film back in April and I enjoyed it very much. Hopefully it finds an even bigger audience this time around.

I agree, with all of this.

Good that it's getting a second push, it was a pretty entertaining movie.

zekeburger1979 07-29-03 01:35 PM

I don't know if any of you guys who think Parminder is hotter than Keira know this, but Parminder will be on E.R. this fall.

Jericho 07-29-03 02:34 PM

I don't know if re-release is the right word since it started small and has maintained a decent audience since then. It's never really had a huge week, as the max amount of theaters it's appeared in is 555. Maybe it will actually go nationwide with 1500-2000 theaters?

Achtung 07-30-03 01:40 AM

I think part of the re-release could also be due to the fact that more Americans might now be aware of who David Beckham is. The movie was originally released here before all the controversy over his transfer to Real Madrid. The story was reported widely even on American TV, so I think that will help the movie out. And, as said before, the success of POTC and Keira Knightley, as well as Parminder Nagra joining ER will help the cause too.

I loved Bend it like Beckham...its such a cute movie..

She signed on for a 1 (?) year contract to star on ER.

Well, I've never heard of any movie (in the history of movies) going "wider" five months after it was released ;)

Well to be fair, My Big Fat Greek Wedding did a similar thing. It was released in April, but didn't crack 1000 theaters until August, before topping 2000 in October. It seems to be the current formula for successful indie picks.

RichC2 07-30-03 06:11 PM

Bend it Like Beckham won't become another MBFGW, tho it's more deserving...just a gut feeling.

That said, Whoever wondered if the film is going "wider", it is - it's spreading from 100 theaters to 1000+ theaters (according to E! and BOM)

Hokeyboy 07-30-03 09:56 PM

Hey, anyone hear that Parminder Nagra is gonna be on ER this year?

;)

bothanspy 07-30-03 11:39 PM

wow. I never even noticed that it had been mentioned several times before I posted.

I don't like her enough to let myself get sucked back into that show.

Don't mind my smart-ass antics, it's been such a day...

Rypro 525 08-02-03 03:48 PM

can someone give me a quick plot synopsis, I'm not the biggest indie junkie as some of you are but as long as its interesting, I might see it (plus at my theater, I will see it in the "luxury theater" which has leather seats and nice cup holders.

Yep, notice the trailer. They now mention her and Pirate's of the Caribbean.

Oh well, it's a good movie that's getting the attention it deserves...
