Now... you want the ultimate movie to guage a person by?

The Princess Bride.

In my lifetime, I've only come across ONE person that did not like that movie.

If someone doesn't like Princess Bride, there's something not quite right upstairs, and not in a good way.

I can't think of any other movie that is so universally loved.
I didnt read the what came after this before hitting the quote button, but I actually loathe this movie.

Mind you its a good movie and before 1994 I really liked it, but while at a conference in the summer of '94 about ten (10) people attending decided to see how many times they could see or show everyone The Princess Bride within a five (5) day period. The last time I checked in on them they were approaching the 27th viewing.

It was painful to say the least.

Just One Of The Guys – Had not heard of this movie until reading this thread.
modern japanese horror films – Have not seen any, not a huge horror fan, but I am expanding my horizons.
Donnie Darko – Have not seen it.
Fight Club – Have not seen it.
Amelie – Rented it, but wasnt able to get the time to view it. Want to see it.
Almost Famous – Not my favorite Crowe movie, but I like it enough to own it.
Joe vs. the Volcano – This and Turner and Hooch I think are Hanks’ best comedic work.
Star Wars – The original trilogy is just fine, I do not know about this new stuff coming out. Lucas has lost his mind.
Memento – Have not seen.
Evil Dead 2 – Have not seen.
Adaptation – Wasnt in the mood for this when went to watch it, probably will rent again.
Dead Alive – Have not seen.
Taxi Driver – Have not seen.
Pearl Harbor – Definitely was not one of Bay’s better movies.
Scary Movie I, II, or III – Saw the first two (2), was not going to watch the third. Nothing memorable about the first two (2).
I Still Know what You Did Last Summer – Have no interest in seeing.
Any movie starring Mandy Moore[/I] – Have not seen any, but her video is included on the Center Stage DVD.
Matrix Reloaded, The – When I first saw it I was honestly pissed about sitting outside a theater for three (3) hours and then watching an 8 minute orgy on a 50 foot screen, but the Matrix is probably best viewed as one (1) movie, not three (3).
Pulp Fiction – First time I saw it I did not pay that much attention and did not “get it”, but upon a second viewing I fell in love with it. I just hope someday QT could attempt to tell a story in linear form.
Office Space – Did not see this in the theater, but its one of my all time favs.
Godfather – Own the trilogy on DVD, but have not gotten a chance to watch.
Mulholland Drive – Have not seen.
Fast and Furious – Saw and regret it.
Michael Bay movies – I do not have a problem with his movies, he makes movies that go “boom”, nothing wrong with that.
Heat – God was that painful to watch, I had my finger on fast–forward the entire time they were chasing one another around the airport.
Blazing Saddles – Saw maybe five (5) minutes of it when I was younger, have not seen the whole thing.
Big Lebowski, The – I might enjoy it upon further viewing, but one of my friends has been referred to as “The Dude” since college.
Hardball – Keanu + little kids = no way in hell am I watching that.
Sweet November – Keanu + Charlize = winner with Devil’s Advocate, but I don’t know about this one (have not seen it).
Spiderman – Wasnt anything memorable.
Daredevil – I actually liked this, don’t get me wrong the suit was bad, but the “bit” actors and supporting cast was awesome. No complaints about Garner either.
Princess Bride, The – See earlier post.
Lord of the Rings – Peter Jackson cant seem to make a bad movie, oh wait Meet the Feebles was outright just wrong.
Piano Teacher, The – Have not seen.
Seven Samurai – Have not seen.
Battle Royale – Have not seen.
Jakarta – Have not seen.
Chasing Amy – Easily Kevin Smith’s best movie.
It's a Wonderful Life – Seen bits and pieces, but have not seen the whole movie. No interest.
David Lynch – Have not seen any of his movies.
Ghost World – Not interested.
Joe Dirt – Saw about ten (10) minutes on USA. All I have to say is that Brittany Daniel is PHAT.
Boondock Saints – Have not seen.
Trainspotting – Have not seen.
Blue Velvet – Have not seen.
Adam Sandler – Will I claim to laugh at Billy Madison in ten (10) years, I don’t know, but Big Daddy is actually quite good.
Kung Pow – Have no interest in seeing.
Beavis and Butthead – Not my type of humor, tried watching some of their shows, but it just didnt do it for me.
A Christmas Story – Wont, can not stand to watch this, have seen bits and pieces, but TNT ruins it with their 24 hour garbage.
Fargo – Didnt like this upon initial viewing, having found it in me to watch it again.
Brazil – Have not seen.
Magnolia – Have not seen.
Requiem for a Dream – Have not seen.
Starship Troopers – Anything where Doogie Howsers saves the universe does not belong on a Ten Best list, but like others have said its “campy fun” and its always good to see Patrick Muldoon’s brain get used like a slurpee.
Top Gun – Favorite movie of all time.

"We Were Soldiers"

If somebody says they like it, I am skeptical about any other film they might suggest.

The Big Lebowski for me. It is a little too 'advanced' for some people, but for the people that watch it and love it... well, I love them

One shouldn't judge one's peers on their movie choices...

But I've always found that people who appreciate The Fifth Element have a better sense of humour, better taste in life choices, better personal hygiene and a slightly more eclectic sound system than other cinephiles.

And if you want to gauge a person's IQ at a glance, ask them what they thought of A.I.'s ending. Regardless of whether they liked or not, if they mention "aliens", "monsters" or "Martians" (my favourite), you may safely assume they are a few coupons short of a free toaster.

Just One Of The Guys – Decent 80's flick...better than average as told from the female perspective....haven't scene it since its release in theaters
modern japanese horror films – Good stuff comes from Japan b/c they can take more risks that typcial Hollywood wouldn't dare touch....unless heavily re-written to star Tom Cruise as an A-list vehicle
Donnie Darko – On my "need to see" list
Fight Club – Incredible performances and great visuals....a bit uneven at times, but does leave a lasting impression
Amelie – Superb writing and visuals. A true filmmaker at work
Almost Famous – Overrated, good performances though
Joe vs. the Volcano – boring...
Star Wars – one of the true landmarks in cinema, great visionary filmmaking
Memento – incredible editing and Guy Pierce and Joey P have great chemistry, definitely re-invents the neo-noir
Evil Dead 2 – Sam Raimi at his campiest best, Bruce takes his role and runs with it
Adaptation – Cage's performance was no less than phenomenal, although the story and 2nd half of the film were a let down
Dead Alive – not a big fan of Peter Jackson's early stuff...this was not even a "B" movie in my book
Taxi Driver – nice atmosphere and performances, technically inventive, but overall I wouldn't say it's one of my favorites
Pearl Harbor – pure garbage....although it was pretty to look at
Scary Movie I, II, or III – I had some funny moments, II was just awful, stayed away from III
I Still Know what You Did Last Summer – only thing good about this was JLW in her bikini and wet shirts
Any movie starring Mandy Moore[/I] – she's cute and has some acting shops, but her movies don't have a good story
Matrix Reloaded, The – boring, it destoryed the whole Matrix experience for me....should've left it with the first one...much better open ending and then leave it at that
Pulp Fiction – incredible storytelling and originator of many cinematic copycats, all time favorite
Office Space – good comedy that everyone relates to..it hit an emotional core with every worker out there
Godfather – for its time, very risk-taking, upon viewing in today's world, it's very tame...although has strong performances from all-around
Mulholland Drive – Lynch at it again....a good visual experience, but ultimately has nothing to show for it
Fast and Furious – cliched MTV fluff.....no cute girls....thumbs down
Michael Bay movies – a technically sound filmmaker who has no idea how to direct a story...stick to videos please
Heat – a fun crime/thriller with nice performances....MAnn is in great control over the somber mood for this film
Blazing Saddles – funny stuff, but not a classic
Big Lebowski, The – not their best, but it's standard fare with a nice performance from Bridges
Hardball – awful.....wannabe tearjearker with Keanu....truly awful
Sweet November – awful.....wannabe tearjearker with Keanu....truly awful
Spiderman – a big let down.....Raimi has gone Hollywood and lost his inventiveness....or perhaps Hollywood is stifling him too much?
Daredevil – bad art design concepts (Can you say Batman wannabe?) and REALLY BAD CASTING
Princess Bride, The – classic comedy, Reiner at the top of his game
Lord of the Rings – Peter Jackson is to be truly admired for taking on such a huge project and creating such epic films and following....with that said, I'm not a fan of the trilogy too much.....give me the first Conan any day
Piano Teacher, The – Should this be "THE PIANO"? If so, then it was a beautifully shot soap opera that was a great sleeping pill...had a great time asleep in the theater for this one
Seven Samurai – true epic filmmaking and inspiration for many filmmakers, fun stuff
Battle Royale – a bit uneven, but has a great emotional core and urgency to everything, Japan filmmaking at its most daring
Jakarta – Have not seen.
Chasing Amy – overrated....Kevin Smith is an amazing writer....but in terms of directing, he does not do it as well
It's a Wonderful Life – classic Capra formula that I've seen in other Capra films done better
David Lynch – a true filmmaker that takes risks.....don't like too many of his films though
Ghost World – a standard movie, nothing more nothing less
Joe Dirt – horrible.....almost like a straight to video movie
Boondock Saints – Have not seen.
Trainspotting – incredible storytelling, with a energetic pace to it. wonderful
Blue Velvet – one of Lynch's only films that I can watch more than once, eerie atmoshpere and performances.....very dreamlike as all his films are
Adam Sandler – I only liked....Billy Madison, Wedding Singer, Punch Drunk Love....other than that, he's a lucky man to make the money he does for the rest of the crap that he makes.....a smart businessman though to keep putting stuff out there that people will pay for
Kung Pow – Have no interest in seeing.
Beavis and Butthead – not as good as the MTV shorts or even earlier independent shorts pre-MTVhows
A Christmas Story – good memories of this film from when I was a kid, but now it's just annoying
Fargo – William MAcy deserved an Oscar for this.....great small film
Brazil – visually stunning, but still a bore-fest
Magnolia – incredible filmmaking, a director in control of everything...and I mean everything....Tom Cruise deserved the oscar for this role
Requiem for a Dream – an "in your face" work of genius.....difficult to watch again and again, but it's an amazing piece of work
Starship Troopers – it's been dubbed "90210 in Space"....and it is....but it's great cheesy fun.
Top Gun – set the 80's on fire with it's MTV style pacing....a standard story that hit at the right time for audiences...enjoyable, but nothing to write home about

Well, I'll be a little different (otherwise I'd just list a bunch MORE films).

For me, it's quite simple. If you don't want to watch a movie because it's in black-and-white, then you don't get my respect.

Vertigo. Everyone I've watched it with is baffled at first, so I have to explain some things. I haven't had anyone say that they hated it, though.

The one thing that bothers me is when people pick movies on a consistant basis that are terrible - and not in a schlocky kind of way. I have a friend that's notorious for picking all kinds of crappy action movies, even if you throw something that would be much better to watch in front of her.

I am just curious, is anyone reading through these?

Just One Of The Guys – it’s ok if nothing else is on TV
Modern Japanese horror films – can't get enough
Donnie Darko – I liked it enough to buy it
Fight Club – awesome, but I wouldn't say I am obsessive about it as some people
Amelie – pretty good
Almost Famous – I don't get why people like this so much
Joe vs. the Volcano – I really want to see it
Star Wars –one of my all time favorites
Memento – great movie, not very much replay, bought it anyway
Evil Dead 2 – loved it, tons of cheese, and some really innovative camera stuff
Adaptation – really messed up, but I liked it
Dead Alive – lots of cheesy goodness, great quotes too
Taxi Driver – pretty good movie, that’s a bit overrated
Pearl Harbor – really pretty crap, with neat explosions
Scary Movie I, II, or III – the first one was sort of clever, then it got old
I Still Know what You Did Last Summer – not cheesy enough
Any movie starring Mandy Moore– extremely hot bubble head, I haven't seen anything with her in it
Matrix Reloaded, The – disappointing yes, but not nearly as horrible as everyone tries to make it
Pulp Fiction – genius, great dialogue, cool story, good editing
Office Space – comedy classic
Godfather – a great movie, but not my favorite gangster movie Mulholland Drive – pretentious BS, filled with monotone dialogue, absolutely hated it
Fast and Furious – its kind of fun in a bad way, I'll probably won't ever watch again unless I am drinking with other people
Michael Bay movies – crap
Heat – too long, too many characters could have been much better, none the less it was pretty good
Blazing Saddles – classic Mel brooks, but can't say I am that big of a fan
Big Lebowski, The – one of my all time favorite movies, it's almost a perfect movie
Hardball – never saw it, it looked really bad
Sweet November – never saw it, not my kind of movie
Spiderman – alright, I didn't really like the villain, too much lovey dovey stuff, and why do they have to start all comic book franchises with an origin movie
Daredevil – I didn't really like the villains that much and they weren't developed very well, the movie was pretty horrible, not enough joey pants or favreau
Princess Bride, The – great... classic 1st movie I ever remember going to, only movie I went to with my dad
Lord of the Rings – genius, instant classic
Piano Teacher, The – ...what is it?
Seven Samurai – always planned on seeing it, I almost guarantee that I end up thinking its overrated people on here have built it up way too much
Battle Royale – really bizarre movie, I loved it
Chasing Amy – I have always avoided this one, isn't about two guys fighting over a girl with a bunch of Kevin smith style dialogue? If so I will continue to avoid it
It's a Wonderful Life – I've seen parts of it...
David Lynch – pretentious.... overrated.... emotionless monotone acting.... I hate his films
Ghost World – ok movie, I loved that long haired guy, it should have had more of him in it
Joe Dirt – Spades career went down the crapper the day Farley died
Boondock Saints – pretty good movie with tons of style
Trainspotting – really liked it, but it’s a bit darker than I would prefer
Blue Velvet – I was really looking forward to seeing this, but after seeing it I couldn't stand it
Adam Sandler – I used to love his movies, now I don't, he showed some potential with punch drunk love
Kung Pow – I'm avoiding this one
Beavis and Butthead – used to love it, and then hated it, and now I don't mind them so much
A Christmas Story – potentially my favorite Christmas movie
Fargo – one of my favorite movies
Brazil – one of my favorite movies, potentially my favorite of all time
Magnolia – totally overrated, it was worth watching once
Requiem for a Dream – I have avoided this one for the longest time, I really have no desire to see a dramatic this is how drugs can screw up your life movies
Starship Troopers – campy cheesy goodness they need to throw more money at stuff like this
Top Gun – I don't think I ever seen the whole thing through, don't really want to either

No, I am just reading the snobby comments about how much better some are because they liked Notorious while someone else they know liked Biker Boyz. I enjoy what I like, but do not care what others like. However, I usually can talk to people about movies more if they enjoy the same type of films as I do. Yet I do not hold anything against those that like Fast and the Furious.

For sensibilities, I'd say Saving Private Ryan. You're allowed to like them film, but you have to at least acknowledge the flimsy dialogue if we're going to be movie buddies.

For purely friend material, you have to like Groundhog Day and Almost Famous. I can get along reasonably well with the Fellini or Kubrick buffs who knock these two films, but I probably won't be sending their children any wedding presents.

I like all of Fellini but I also think "Groundhog Day" is a work of genius. Often imitated, nowadays...

Eddie Izzard's Dress To Kill . . . if your cheeks don't hurt after watching this for the first time, then you're just not going to be ble to keep up . . .

From a film point of view . . . a persons reaction to The Power Of One will tell you an awful lot about them . . .

Hey I really liked "The Hot Chick" (see my review on the IMDb) and not just because I don't want to sleep with you.

Well, let's be realistic now. It's not The Mummy Returns, now is it?

Nothing compares to The Mummy Returns.

On a different tack, I would probably have a natural affinity with anyone who has seen Polanski's Tess in a theatre a couple of times, like I have.

I don't think I could judge anyone by a single movie. Although I am sometimes a little frightened when someone hates a movie I love.

However, I will sometimes judge someone by their overall taste in movies. Not that I wouldn't like them, or even hang out with them, but I would be skeptical of how much in common I'd really have with them. I know a girl who pretty much watches nothing by romantic comedies. While I like some romantic comedies, I can safely say I wouldn't trust her opinion on any movie.

I know some people who think they're film critics and don't trust their opinions on most movies. One friend hated Finding Nemo because he felt there wasn't sufficient character development. umm ok.

If you're favorite movies tend to be things like Steven Segal and Van Damme movies and you tend to dislike a lot of my favorite films... chances are you and I won't be close friends...
