I'm not quite sure why, but I find the lists of movies people haven't seen and haven't heard of more interesting than whether they liked or disliked a personal favorite of mine. Perhaps in some way those choices are more telling, more indicative of personal bias.

Personally, I enjoy meeting people with an open mind who haven’t seen a lot of my favorites—it’s fun to turn people on to new experiences and have someone with a fresh perspective to discuss the movie with.

Memento - One of the most clever, thought provoking films ever made
Evil Dead 2 - One of my all time favorites
Adaptation - Brilliant
Dead Alive - Great movie

Any movie starring Mandy Moore - Crap Crap
The Matrix Reloaded - A fairly dissapointing sequel that had its moments
Pulp Fiction - Great, great movie
Office Space - Best comedy of all time.
Godfather - I and II = great movies

Beavis and Butthead - Funny, yet their humor grows tired
A Christmas Story - Classic
Fargo - Great movie
brazil - Very interesting and thought provoking movie. Requires multiple viewings.
Magnolia - Never seen
Requiem for a Dream - Very well made, yet too much of a downer to watch very often.

Bringing back an old thread but I find myself judging so often, I couldn't resist replying to this. I most often use movies I loathe as litmus tests. If someone actually liked the following films they will be judged:

Anger Management - Just completely not funny, and I don't hate Adam Sandler. I love Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison for good mindless fun.

XxX - The new James Bond? Yeah right.

Some movies I haven't even seen but would judge people on: (I know its wrong but chances are if these are movies they enjoy we have different interests)

2fast2furious
Bad Boys 2

As for movies I like that I use:

Toy Story 1 and 2 - If you don't enjoy these there might be something wrong with you.

Cable Guy - Most hate it, so I don't use it as a test really but if you like it (I love it) it could be a good sign.

Amelie, Rushmore - Two that I really enjoy that are slightly less mainsteam but still widely seen. These will give me an indication of whether or not a person is a little more eclectic in their tastes.

If you are overly obsessed with this I will judge and make fun of you:

Star Wars - I mean after seeing the Triumph the Insult comic dog bit, how could you not. I enjoy the movies though.

Well I'll put my two cents in.... I'm just going to list the movies that I feel I go against the grain on... I think these are the cases that define you more as an individual.

I KNOW I'm gonna get flamed for this list.... HAHA !!

Movies that most people I meet liked but I didn't:

Amelie
Rushmore
Chasing Amy (although I do like most of Kevin Smith's stuff)
The Crow
Bowling for Columbine
The Fast and the Furious

Movies that I LOVE that most people discount in some way or don't like:

ALL Star Trek movies
Joe Vs The Volcano
13th Warrior
Boondock Saints
Vanilla SKy
Joe vs. the Volcano
Being There
Brazil
Seven Samurai

Do I judge people on what they like or don't like? No. Do I like them more when we agree on one of the above? Definitely.

btw... Trigger / B.A.hist... It's COEN !! No H !!

Tom Banjo I think we would get along good. I appreciate the Acting in Magnolia, but I hate the film... with a passion. What do you think about Punch Drunk Love?

I agree about the Princess bride. You gotta love that film.

If you have seen Red Beard by Kurosawa and love it then we could be best friends. If you've seen and like Chun King Express, or What time is there? then we could get along great.

I'll do the list thing, do people actually read this?

Just One Of The Guys - Never seen it. Maybe read the rest of my list and tell me if I would like it.

Modern japanese horror films - I don't really like horror. Japanese horror, doesn't provide enough for me.

Donnie Darko - It was good. But overrated.

Fight Club - This is a good movie. Very good. Even better the second time I saw it.

Amelie - This is one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen. I love it. Simple story telling, presented in a unique way.

Almost Famous - Not a fan. I Like it enough, and don't mind watching it, but It didn't hook me like other similar movies

Joe vs. the Volcano - Great Movie. Reminds me I need to rewatch it.

Star Wars - It's Star Wars. Defined modern special effect and movie making. The OT is fantastic, a whole universe created for the viewer. The prequels are trash... some of the most over blown worthless movies ever made. 'Necessity is the mother of all invention.' George need to go back to muppets.

Memento - Great Movie. Established Guy Pierce in my mind, as fantastic actor. Loses points for creating an editing trend...

Evil Dead 2 - Good. Fun movie.

Adaptation - Great Performence by Nick Cage. Most people think the ending is flaky, but I think it's the most clever part of the movie. Maybe most don't get it?

Dead Alive - Never Seen it.

Taxi Driver - Close to, if not the Best Scorsese.

Pearl Harbor - Terrible! Good god. The trailer was epic, and after seeing the Thin Red Line and Saving Private Ryan I was ready for another amazing war epic.

Scary movie - POS, maybe my opinion doesn't count, don't like straight forward horror.

I Still Know what You Did Last Summer - POS, what I saw at least.

Any movie starring Mandy Moore - Didn't see it, didn't care to see. I would hit it.

The Matrix Reloaded - Terrible movie overall, but the Wackowski brothers are doing alot in "this type" of filmaking that other directors aren't. Some of the visual themes, and story telling devices are sophisicated even though the movie is bad.

Pulp Fiction - Quentin is a fan of film making and this is a really, really, good Film. I thought Kill Bill was great omage to Martial Arts Film Making. I wonder if Quentin will ever live up to Pulp though?

Office Space - Good! Ron Livingston is a funny good and charismatic actor.

Godfather - I and II = These are good movies to judge people by. These are masterpieces of story telling. Part I is a much better story than part II, although the sequence with Robert Dinero is amazing.

Mulholland Drive - David Lynch is the man!

Fast and Furious - Good... god... This movie makes me want to hurt myself.

Michael Bay movies - He went to Art Center. I go to Art Center... That shames me.

Heat - Good performences... but it was long winded... had potential.

Blazing Saddles - Hilarious! Great fun!

The Big Lebowski - Funniest movie of all time.

Hardball - Ehhhh? *looks it up on IMDB.com

Sweet November - Charlize gets my vote, and I watched this movie, but I perfer something like Chun King Express for romantic melo drama.

Spiderman - Fun, love superheroes as a kid, but expected more.

Daredevil - Avoided like the plague... really like jennifer garner!

The Princess Bride - The Wizard of Oz of my generation.

Lord of the Rings - Fantastic... The first film to live up to the books of my youth. Grew up on the books in my youth... Beautiful story, acting... touched my heart. Makes my top 10.

The Piano Teacher - Saw a long time ago... I think The Pianist is one of the better movies I've seen...

Seven Samurai - Would place No. 2 on top 10 of all time, right behind Red Beard.

Battle Royale - Looking forward to seeing it.

Jakarta - What?

Chasing Amy - Lets just put it this way... If I saw Kevin smith on the street I would punch him in the face.

It's a Wonderful Life - How could you not like this movie?

David Lynch - One of the better Film Makers working today.

Ghost World - Good movie. Scarlet Johanson and Birch are very talanted. Great...

Joe Dirt - Avoided this at all costs.... Just uttering the name makes me want jump of something high.

Boondock Saints - Love the beggining, but turns mediocre. I enjoyed it and could watch without a problem.

Trainspotting - Great movie... hard to watch.

Blue Velvet - David Lynch is the man.

Adam Sandler - Even in punch drunk love he was "Still adam sandler. Although I appreciated him more.

Kung Pow - Tried to watch some of it.... turned it off after a few seconds.

Beavis and Butthead - Not a fan... love animation, but don't like this at all. Then again I don't really like the simpsons, although

A Christmas Story - Hilarious... reminds me of my youth.

Fargo - Coen Brothers are some of the most creative, original story tellers working/have worked in movies ever. This movie is really ****ing good.

Brazil - Genious!

Magnolia - Hate... Want to grind some bones... Pretentious...

Requiem for a Dream - Great Movie... Very talanted director. Pi was better.

Starship Troopers - Pretty Good, Full of great social commentary.

2001 - one of I believe, only three? true science fiction movies? Plus just an incredible journey on film.

Just One Of The Guys - Um what?

modern japanese horror films - Got Ringu, haven't watched.

Donnie Darko - Been meaning to see it.

Fight Club - Mindblowing. There's so much to learn from it, but if you learn to much, then you become what it preaches against.

Amelie - Got it, unseen

Almost Famous - Got it, not yet seen it.

Joe vs. the Volcano - I vaguely recall renting this on VHS a long time ago, but I don't remember hating or loving it. Been meaning to re-watch.

Star Wars - Love em. First 3 are classic. New ones arent as bad as people complain. The new ones are just fun flicks. What else to add except they are the Holy Trilogy.

Memento - Haven't seen it, not very high on my list either.

Evil Dead 2 - Good...but..., I prefer the first and third flix of the trilogy.

Adaptation - Never seen it. Prolly wont.

Dead Alive - See above

Taxi Driver - I keep meaning too watch this, but never get around to it.

Pearl Harbor - I wanted this to be good, I wanted the DC to be good, but I haven't read a single good review yet so no.

Scary movie (either) - First was just balls out stupid funny, I loved it. Second was just kinda going thru the motions. Did want to see the third though, maybe DVD.

I Still Know what You Did Last Summer - No thanks.

Any movie starring Mandy Moore - No thanks. Unless she's nekkid.

The Matrix Reloaded - I really enjoyed the first movie, but with so many mixed reviews of the sequels, I'm still debating whether or not to pretend the first movie was a standalone story.

Pulp Fiction - I tried watching this back in the day and couldn't get into it. Been meaning to retry it.

Office Space - If you've spent any amount of time in an office job, this is like your gospel and revelations in one.

Godfather - I can recognize the cinema and wonderful story, but it's not easy to watch.

Mulholland Drive - Never seen it.

Fast and Furious - I dont think so.

Michael Bay movies - Nope.

Blazing Saddles - Very funny, but the ending seemed a little toosurreal.

The Big Lebowski - Saw it years ago and really disliked it.

Hardball - Don't think that I know what it is?

Sweet November - Not a chance.

Spiderman - OK, I really wanted to like it though.

Daredevil -Never saw it.

The Princess Bride - One of the greatest movies ever.

Lord of the Rings - Very good movies. Better then they should have been, all things considered. Glad they are succesful.

The Piano Teacher - What?

Seven Samurai - Ashamed I have not seen this.

Battle Royale - Heard a lot, but on the fence about watching.

Jakarta - Wha? Ditto. Is it a sequel to Jumanji? Cause I loved that.

Chasing Amy - Smith's best work. Story came from the heart so it would have been hard to mess up, but I still love the rest of them.

It's a Wonderful Life - Haven't worked up the courage (patience?) to watch this.

David Lynch - Dune was great but seriously needs an extended edition. The Straight Story was simple, yet simply amazing. Beautiful cinematography too.

Ghost World - No, but looks interesting.

Joe Dirt - Saw some on TV recently, looked like another SNL sketch gone on too long.

Boondock Saints - "Steaming pile of festering crap. So worthless, talentless, miserable filmmaking it makes me hate life. Its cult following is just a tribute to how bad things are. Tarantino rip off. Not even a good one." Well after that glowing review, I'll probably pass.

Trainspotting - Not sure I want to see it.

Blue Velvet - Haven't seen, and it's pretty much off the radar.

Adam Sandler - Can be entertaining if approached right. Wedding Singer was pretty fun, Gilmore was great, Little Nicky is way funnier than it has any right to be. (I'd love to see some foreign-pudding-eating-gay-cowboy-type of director do a serious take on the story though, honestly.) Punch Drunk Love was just an amazing piece of film. Some of it seemed so wacky, yet we all know someone with some of those frailties and needs.
Slightly OT, but Sandler's SNL stuff where he was less scripted can be fall on the floor hilarious. And the Chanakuh songs are becoming part of the holiday lexicon it would seem.

kung pow - Looks interesting.

Beavis and Butthead - I can't think of enough words to describe how much I love these two idiots. Like somebody said above, if people don't like their humor that's one thing, but if they just think it's dumb because they're dumb, then maybe it's hitting a little too close to the mark. And the movie is just great and seriously needs an SE DVD.
For awhile, I thought the spinoff Daria was far superior, but the her anger got a little tiring after awhile. Alan Alda syndrome I suppose. She seriously needed to get laid.

A Christmas Story - What little I've seen seems a little overwrought and melodramatic. Christmas Vacation is our traditional movie.

Fargo - Puts me to sleep. I tried.

Brazil - Incredible filmmaking, but the story behind it is sometimes more interesting.

Keeping with Gilliam, 12 Monkeys is one of the best non-sci fi, sci fi movies ever.

Magnolia - Powerful but not easy to watch. Some great filmmaking, but maybe easier to digest as a miniseries?

Requiem for a Dream - On my want list, but not very high.

Starship Troopers - Incredible war propaganda satire. As an armchair historian, my jaw hit the floor several times during this flick at some of the "love your country or else" bits. And pretty fun. Curious about the sequel too, will they increase the boobage to cover up the direct to video budget? Is that a bad thing if they do?

Just One Of The Guys - Never seen it

modern japanese horror films - Never seen any that I know of.

Donnie Darko - I enjoyed it but I think it is slightly overrated

Fight Club - Hmm enjoyed the movie but I also think this one is overated. The whole twist really didn't seem all that profound or intruiging to me.

Amelie - I love this movie, the style, the characters, and I love Amelie .

Almost Famous - Ashamed to say I have never seen it

Joe vs. the Volcano - Watched so long ago I really don't remember

Star Wars - I enjoy these but not to the obsessive fanboy state which is pathetic and sad IMO

Memento - Great original film

Evil Dead 2 - I will have to watch this, I think I saw it a long time ago but have forgotten

Adaptation - Great movie, I can't get enough of the self-loathing humor and the "third act" idea is brilliiant

Dead Alive - Never seen it

Taxi Driver -Great film, have to watch again

Pearl Harbor - Never cared to see it.

Scary movie -the first one was funny for what it was, second one total crap (saw on tv). Gross out humor + low brow sex jokes, all just completely unfunny. Never seen 3.

I Still Know what You Did Last Summer - Saw this or the first, can't remember, they are forgettable.

Any movie starring Mandy Moore - Never seen any

The Matrix Reloaded - Matrix=great, Reloaded= pretentious, egotistical crap. When "the architect" started his tedious spiel of "look I'm using big words" I wanted to leave. Will Farrell nailed that in his parody. They took the style, concise smart dialogue from the first and drew it out sucking out the style. Should have never been made a trilogy

Pulp Fiction - Great, great film

Office Space - Hilarious movie

Godfather - Love these with 2 being my favorite, the scene where
Spoiler:
Vito Corleone shoots the black hand with the flickering lights
is pure cinematic brilliance. 3 was just okay though.

Mulholland Drive - Good movie

Fast and Furious - I didn't mind the first so much, but would have to beaten and dragged into the second. Tyrese tough? yeah right. Not a big fan of fastandfuriousmobiles either

Michael Bay movies - Enjoyed the Rock but none of his other movies.

Heat - Great movie,underated

Blazing Saddles - Never seen it, my girlfriend couln't believe that as I am always introducing her to movies.

The Big Lebowski - I enjoyed it but don't worship it like some.

Hardball - Huh?

Sweet November - I actually saw this cause my ex chose it, but even she decided it sucked about a 1/3 through the movie and she had horid taste in movies.

Spiderman - I really liked this. This and the x-men movies did comic book movies right IMO. Not a big fan of Kirsten Dunst though, shes really not that attractive or talented IMO

Daredevil - Won't be seeing it prob.

The Princess Bride - Loved it as a kid and still love it.

Lord of the Rings - Great movies, with FOTR being my favorite. I did get tired of Frodos "anguishing" though, every scene had him falling over or something.

The Piano Teacher - Never seen

Seven Samurai - Probably my next rental

Battle Royale - Never seen

Jakarta - Never even heard of it.

Chasing Amy - Haven't seen, enjoyed Smith's earlier films (Clerks, Mallrats), but after Dogma and JASBSB I'm not impressed. He went from stylish and semi-witty dialogue with interesting characters to an egomaniac with in-jokes and poorly written dialogue with extensive cussing

It's a Wonderful Life - never seen it.

David Lynch - I will have to see more of his movies as I am a relative newbie to him

Ghost World - I really enjoyed this film, I love the constant sarcasm.

Joe Dirt - Semi funny in parts

Boondock Saints - Enjoyed the style and everything but just a good action film nothing more.

Trainspotting - Haven't seen

Blue Velvet - Never seen

Adam Sandler -Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore were funny mindless comedies. Anger management, just not funny. Needs to get away from the hollywood production and cameos and just be stupid funny again.

kung pow - Won't see, I remember reccomending the Royal Tenenbaums to a friend at a Blockbuster and she said it wasn't funny or good, then proceeded to get this.

Beavis and Butthead - Loved it in junior high but haven't seen it more recently to give an opinion

A Christmas Story - Seen a million times as it was always on tv around christmas, still funny and quotable.

Fargo - Great film, will have to watch again.

brazil - I just rented it will have to give my opinion after I watch it.

Magnolia - Really enjoyed it, although the story was a let down. I can forgive a movie if I like the characters especially John C. Reilly's performance, he plays such a nice guy you just end up feeling so bad for him.

Requiem for a Dream - Very depressing but a great movie, and the perfect anti-drug film.

Starship Troopers - An action movie and much more. Great film

Wow there are a lot of movies are that are considered great that I have never even seen. I would consider myself a film snob sometimes, but some of the lesser known films I will have to watch as soon as possible.

Great sense of humor if they like, "Dumb and Dumber"

Plus I'm not a big Quentin Tarantino fan, so if they like his movies then I prefer not to talk to them.

While I love all the films, the "Jersey Trilogy" (Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy) is essential viewing. Chasing Amy is considered by most the peak of Smith's films so far, so you should probably give it a look. It was a very personal film for Smith, and it comes thru on the screen.

I like people who are willing to watch just about any movie once, regardless of genre. I have found gems in everything from old B&W classics to eye-candy blockbusters. Anyone that constantly uses excuses like it's a chick-flick, it's sub-titled, or it's just mindless action to avoid watching a movie won't be a friend for long.

There's actually a number of movies I judge people by, such as La Dolce Vita, 8 1/2, L'Avventura, Seven samurai, definitely any Tarkovsky films. Usually when people get horny over a recent Hollywood hit such as T3, Pirates of the Carribean or Seabiscuit, I am able to measure their intelligence level (cinema intelligence that is...).

I think I'll just throw in my most controversial opinions, what the heck.

Greatly admired films that I spit on:

Fight Club - you can that deep?
Almost Famous - a semibiographical film with not a shred of believability and a script right out of sitcoms.
Adaptation - is Charlie Kaufman really that self-absorbed?
Chasing Amy - worst direction in a Criterion, period.
Office Space - great beginning, then nosedives into ludicrous plot filler.
Star Wars - apart from Empire Strikes Back, none of them are worth watching again, ever.
The Matrix - heck, I didn't even think the first one was that great (save the special effects)

Good films, but rather overrated:

Donnie Dark
Seven Samurai
Amelie
Battle Royale
Ghost World
Pulp Fiction
It's a Wonderful Life

The only one that comes to mind is Irreversible. If you love that movie, you are out of the dating pool. No questions asked.

this sure looks fun...

Just One Of The Guys - never seen/hear about it...
modern japanese horror films - too early to tell, i've only watched 2 of them recently; Ringu & Audition (like them both so far)
Donnie Darko - definitely good movie... overatted? maybe, but it still good
Fight Club - it's like a bible....
Amelie - it's good, i like it... not a fan, but like it
Almost Famous - i think it's interesting. it's not bad, but it's not really that good either (over rated? maybe)... i think Vanilla Sky's better
Joe vs. the Volcano - never seen it... not a big fan of Hank
Star Wars - i like all of them so far.... especially the original trilogy
Memento - again, it's good... but not a fan of it.
Evil Dead 2 - i prefer the original (scary) & Army of Darkness (pure comedy/adventure)... but they all good in my book
Adaptation - good acting, directing, story line, stylish... but not really for me. but overall, it's good
Dead Alive - Gad bless Peter Jackson.... nuff said
Taxi Driver - gritty & great performance by all star... definitely one of De Niro's best moment
Pearl Harbor - it's good popcorn for me... hate the love story with passion, but dynamite action scene.
Scary movie - i don't think it's that funny... it's decent (the original)... the 2nd blows, haven't seen the 3rd
I Still Know what You Did Last Summer - tried to watched it... but the all-goody-goody-looking-stars really turned me off...
Any movie starring Mandy Moore - hmmm i might watched one of her movie, but i'm not sure.... so no real comment
The Matrix Reloaded - it is definitely a great popcorn. the original still miles away better
Pulp Fiction - love everybody involved with the movie, overall... one of the best movie there is. & no, it's not over rated
Office Space - The funniest comedy ever made.... EVERRRRR
Godfather - the bible of mfia movies? heck, why not? it's THAT good
Mulholland Drive - i like it.... i only got a few experience with Lynch's movies, but i definitely like this one
Fast and Furious - i love cars, i love import cars, i love popcorn... this is a good mix
Michael Bay movies - so far, i'm a fan of his action movies.... as long he's not making another love-scene/romantic-crap (Pearl Harbor), i'm good with him
Heat - it's a solid movie.... not a big fan, but definitely like it.
Blazing Saddles - haven't seen it.
The Big Lebowski - saw few moments of it... not my kind of jokes really
Hardball - it's ok. Keanu + kids... the kids actually act better than him. & the they weren't even real pro actors
Sweet November - hmmm... never have a passion for romantic/drama... so, i'll have to pass on this
Spiderman - I liked it!! it's cute, it's fun, campy, over rated all in one... good deal
Daredevil - saw it... i think it's ok. Ben was great, but the rest was so-so... need to see more Farrel though
The Princess Bride - never seen it.....
Lord of the Rings - it's WOW!! just amazingly WOW!! all of them
The Piano Teacher - never heard.
Seven Samurai - watched it... not a fan of it. too slow, too much politics in it... at the end, i'm confused
Battle Royale - never got a chance to see... definitely in my need to see list
Jakarta - hmmm definitely never watch this before. but i was born there
Chasing Amy - hate Kevin Smith films.
It's a Wonderful Life - haven't seen it.
Ghost World - haven't seen it.
Joe Dirt - it is definitely funny... David Spade really rock there aside from Tommy Boy, Emperor New Groove
Boondock Saints - never seen it
Trainspotting - watched it, i think it was funny, but i couldn't understand about 40%-50% of the jokes... so, hard to say if i like it
Blue Velvet - it's a freaky adventure... can't wait to see Eraserhead
Adam Sandler - he's a funny man. like him in Big daddy & Water Boy. the rest were ok...
kung pow - they tried too hard to make funny... it was funny for the first half hour or so, then the jokes were kind of dry out
Beavis and Butthead - kinda gets old after some time.
A Christmas Story - never got a chance to see either one of it... putting in my next to watch list
Fargo - hmm... watched it, but can't remember anything about it.
brazil - i'm not a Terry Gilliam's fan... i like 12 Monkeys & Time Bandits is decent... but i need to see this (Terry + De Niro = must be good, right?)
Magnolia - definetly not my cup of tea
Requiem for a Dream - one-time experience only... it was good, but i ain't going back there again
Starship Troopers - i thought he reached the top with Robocop... now, he did it again. very much like it
John Carpenter's Movies - like about 80-95% of them... he is one of the best.
