Good movie. Had my hopes up a little higher than they should
have been. Didn't quite live up to my expectations, but I still
enjoyed it.

Pretty good acting by Depp and Rush and a few of the supporting
pirates.

Overall: :up::up:

I kept wondering that throughout the movie at times, but I figured otherwise until that scene.

This is a film that's good entertainment and just plain fun. 3.5 out of 4.

not really.

Spoiler:
He only became cursed when he took the coins out and kept one. He knew the curse would be broken by Turner and it made him immune to the Captain's sword. He gave the coin back to Turner AND was released from the curse just like the rest of the pirates when Turner bled into the chest. At this point the monkey is the only cursed character in the movie.

I just got back from it and loved it

Spoiler:
I think he wasn't an undead pirate til near the end when he took the coin from the chest when he was talking the undead into going out to the ambush

Actually, if you waited until the end of the credits...
Spoiler:
...the monkey swims into the cave and steps into the moonlight, clearly uncursed. The monkey then climbs up the treasure mound, past Barbosa's corpse, and grabs a coin. He steps back into the moonlight, again cursed and a skeleton, and jumps at the screen

11. Man being shaken over the rails of the balcony in the pirate town.

Read this somewhere else:

Not for a few years... It sucks now that they changed it all around to be politically correct... Disneyland decided to bow to pressure from special interest groups (or whoever..) and changed it. So now, the pirates who used to chase the damsels with lecherous intent are now only chasing them cuz they have food...how retarded is that??? Ugh!

My wife and I saw this this afternoon & I have to add to all of the glowing reviews. This movie was great! One of the best I have seen in the theater in a long time. Good action, good effects, good laughs (not forced) and good story.

I had read about the long running time and was worried (I have pacing problems) but I was never bored. Finally a movie where I can't wait for a sequel to be made.

Johnny Depp rules! (I never thought I would say that)
He pulled off a hard role in my opinion. Many actors could not play his role that way & do it correctly. He never seemed forced and his humor & action scenes just seemed natural. Kind of like another adventurer by the name of Indiana.

Yeah, I know I waited to see that part too...

Spoiler:
like I said..."At this point" the monkey is the only character cursed.

I'm sorry to stray off-topic, but I couldn't let this one go without comment. Is it necessary to flame those who dare to disagree with your opinion on a film? I am "older horror fan" myself, older than most posters in this forum, and I found The Ring to be top-notch. I even give it a slight edge over the original.

Back on topic, Pirates was a great summer film. Well-paced, exciting, and a good blend of special-effects and great practical stunts. Those with nice sound systems at home will definitely want to check out the post-credit scene. Wow!

Ummm...

Where did I flame anyone? Nowhere, unless you are either counting the movie as a person (since I said it was crap), or you are extremely thin-skinned and think "young 'uns" is an insult. Either way, that's your problem, not mine.

And I'm sorry, but The Ring never scared or entertained me. Not once. There were just too many holes in the story, and the "solution" to beating the "monster" at the end seemed like it was pulled from someone's backside. I just did not like it, and I have the right to share that opinion even if you don't agree with me, just as you have the right to say you liked it.

Having the nerve to disagree about the perceived quality of a movie is not flaming.

Well said. We weren't attacking people, just the movie itself. If some people liked it, more power to them. Do I think anything less of them? Not really. Saying that a certain age group might not like it as much as anothe is not a flame.

Now....saying Groucho is an idiot who doesn't know how to make straight forward posts and watches sucky horror movies...that would be a flame my friend! ;)

a great summer fun movie...when i go to a movie i ask "did i get entertained for 2 hours? or was my $6.50 well spent for 2 2 1/2 hours?"The answer here is a big YES..let yourself go be a kid and enjoy it

Goldberg74 07-13-03 08:02 PM

They should make The Ring a ride at Disneyland. ;)

MJKTool 07-13-03 08:17 PM

I went into this movie not expecting anything to be honest. Hell the only reason I saw it was to escape from the heat for some air conditioning. I mean its a movie based on a Disneyland ride for crying out loud, how good could it be? But damn...I loved this movie, absolutely took me by surprise to how much I was enjoying it! The skeleton scenes were awesome!! Great, great movie, cant wait for the DVD!

Im curious to see how The Haunted Mansion turns out now.

Groucho 07-13-03 08:52 PM

Come on guys, the "if you disagree with me on this movie you must not know much about the genre" is one of the oldest flames on the internet. My main point is, if you are going to criticize a film, talk about the film...not about it's audience. Anyway, I've been guilty of this myself, so I'd better stop blathering before somebody uses one of my old posts against me. ;)

bsktballDude1 07-13-03 11:38 PM

I just saw it again today, after seeing it opening night, and it was just as fun as last time(caught the thing after the credits, kind of cool-smile-). POTC is such a fun summer movie, and is one actually worth money to go back again and again.

Happy to see it do 70 million over the 5 days, hopefully it will have strong legs over the coming weeks.

Damn I love this movie, the cast is just so freaking perfect. Depp, Keira, Bloom, and Rush are awesome.

As Kal Jedi said it best about Keira Knightley, Keira walking the plank...

6 years old is "older than most posters"? Sure, chief... ;)

Stoolie 07-14-03 07:30 AM

I was mostly pleased with the movie, though I did feel it ran a little long. And wherever Johnny Depp went to obtain the pirate vibe, he's always welcome to return there.

I wish it would've been rated AHRRRR.

Rogue588 07-14-03 05:07 PM

quite simply...this movie ROCKED.

I was entertained from beginning to end.

Johnny was fantastic. [He said he based Jack on Keith Richards and Pepe Le Pew] Keira was good [and ]. Geoffrey was great. So was Orlando [though I did think of Legolas a couple times when he was fighting Johnny in the blacksmith shop ;)].

2 & a half hours? Didn't even seem like it.

The sets were great. I loved the little hommages to the ride. As stated in this thread the CGI was perfect. Not overdone. Nor was it lacking. It was just right. I really hope this movie does good.

I am EAGERLY anticipating this DVD. Hopefully it'll be a double disc set and Disney will throw on some archival material about the ride too.

What DID piss me off...is that I didn't read this thread until after I saw the movie [didn't want to be spoiler'd], so I didn't know to stay until the credits ended... [But that was my own fault...stupid Rogue588.]

But as far as i'm concerned, this is the. best. movie. of. the. summer.

Hands down.

[Regarding a sequel...Johnny said on Dave that he wouldn't be adverse to shooting another one since this was one of the most fun he's ever had shooting a movie..]

Am I the only one that thinks this was the tamest PG-13 movie ever?

ccoolidge 07-14-03 05:41 PM

Enjoyable, 7.5 out of 10.

The last 40 minutes really started to drag for me. The whole fight scene (soldiers vs. pirates, Depp vs. Rush, Bloom and girl vs. other pirates, etc.) just went on and on and quite frankly wasn't that exciting, just rehashing fight scenes that had already occurred with even fewer stunts. The last 40 could have easily been trimmed down to 20-25 without really losing anything and would have made it a bit 'tighter' film overall. Just my opinion.

Depp was great in it, and I did find it enjoyable. Could be a fun sequel.

I disagree. I would label this as a "hard" PG-13. The movie is quite violent, albeit not very graphic and bloody.

The ride was changed even after that. Apparently, it wasn't obvious enough that the pirate was chasing the wench for the platter of food she was carrying, so it was changed to the wench chasing the pirate with a stick or something like that. I guess there it no Anti-Violence Against Pirates special interest group.

Great movie, by the way. Depp was excellent as usual. "21 Jump Street" seems like a million years ago.
