I was expecting it to be enjoyably good, but it turned out to be amazing.

There was a good 90 minute movie somewhere in this 145 minute mess.

Sounds like you just pulled a quote out of a newspaper review to be that guy. What was the 145 minute mess?

9.Pirates sitting on barrels shooting their guns
10. When Will & Jack are creeping in the caves, they come across the skeletal remains of a pirate. An exact replica of the one with the crab crawling around it.

I can hardly wait to see this flick again. Scenes from the movie keep popping up in my head. I'll be back in the theatre this weekend.

The scene where the pirates go back and forth from skeletons to humans was one of the coolest things I've seen in a movie in long damn time.

And thankfully someone had to walk the plank. There shoulda been shark fins in the water though. I woulda pissed myself in delight.

Like others have mentioned, it was wonderful to see Keira's role be a strong, intelligent female, and not the wimpy damsel in distress.

Depp was fascinating. Flame away if you must, but of all the actors I've seen, Johnny is the greatest ever.

This is the pirate movie that would not end. Oh my goodness, it could have been a mini-series given the pacing and the plotlines the writers developed.

Other than the length of the film, it captured the spirit of good pirate films of yore (the scroundrel aspect of pirates, the willingness to bargain to the exact letter of the agreement, the funny quips of irony, etc). There cross purposes at work from many different angles, and since it ran so long, you never really knew where it was going until they decided to get "there".

Overall, I thought the acting performances were good all around, with Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush pulling most of the weight with aplomb. Orlando Bloom is still a bit wet behind the ears, but the girls in the audience swooned when he showed up on the screen. Keira Knightley showed enough toughness when called upon, and aristocratic flair rather easily. The supporting characters all contributed to the big cast and crew of characters that flowed in and out of the film.

I give it 3.5 stars, or a grade of B+ (would have been an A- if it were cut down from its 143 minute running time).

I don't think he could be considered the best ever, but Depp is certainly on the short list of best actors of his generation along with Ed Norton and Sean Penn. He has a very interesting body of work and I think the best is yet to come....

The movie was great. My wife and I went on Wednesday at 7:30 and the place was packed. I hope this one has legs. I find it funny both this and T3 looked like stinkers and end up being the two best movies of the summer. Lets hope Bad Boys 2 can keep up the good stride.

Hey, I'm with ya... The Ring blew goats! :-) Maybe it's good to the young 'uns, but to an older horror fan, it was a yawn-fest.

If I had known the same guy was behind Pirates, I might not have been so eager to see it. Thankfully I didn't know, and I absolutely enjoyed this movie. I'm not a huge Depp fan, but when he's "on," he's unstoppable... and he was definitely "on" in Pirates. If I remember correctly, he was asked to tone down his performance because it was SO over the top.

Would it be too scary for a four year old?

It was good for a pirate movie (which isn't saying much)... I enjoyed it, but I wasn't blown away. I was able to forgive most of the flaws seeing as how it was a fantasy movie. Johnny Depp is indeed one of my favorite actors, but I thought he was kinda doing the same routine from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. The lead actress was amazingly beautiful and everyone gave a good performance. The effects were great. Can't complain too much.

In my opinion yes but I guess it depends on the child. It's rated PG-13 for reason.

I'm not much for writing fancy reviews so I'll just say I loved this movie. My favorite of the year so far. Depp was fantastic. I loved Rush as well but thought Bloom was a little flat. Knightly...well what else can I say that hasn't been said already? Hottie!

I haven't seen it yet but according to some reviews it is a "hard" PG-13 meaning close to R in their opinion. From what I have read, this is not a movie for small children.

...but what do I know, I've seen small children in the theater for just about every movie I've been to. There are less for R rated films but they are still there (particularly Reloaded).

As far as children are concerned I went with a 9-year old and a 6-year old and it wasn't that bad... Mostly violence but a lot of it off-screen (you can hear the swords going into intestines and what not, but as a 6-yr old you shouldn't know what that sounds like).

I thought the movie would be OK, then I was surprised it got awesome reviews, then I saw it and it was OK again. The first act is great but afterwards I lost a lot of interest. I dozed off too.

Charlie's Angels was still better.

Well, there was a *lot* more gold and treasure in the cave than that cursed amount in the chest. It seemed to me that he intended to go back for that, not the cursed coins. In any case, if they do want to make a sequel, just going back there (even for the non-cursed gold) could definitely lend itself to one, what with greed and temptation and all.

Great movie! Best of the summer thus far...

Glad to see more and more people actually loving a great movie! I hope this movie gets some good word of mouth from the public and sustains over the weeks.
It will be ironic if Bad Boys 2 is either kept down or puts down POTCl; it would be Jerry Bruckheimer impairing the success of his own movies.

[hijack]Ed Norton? Did you see The Italian Job? Its seems he was playing himself. But I have to say that my favorite movie of his Keeping the Faith... [/hijack]

I loved this film and will be taking my wife to see it next week.

Depp was spot on, Rush was over-the-top as usual, Pryce was funny as the stuffy governor, I kept waiting for Bloom to pick up a bow, and Knightley was... well... I'm married.

I loved the tie-ins from the rise and fell over laughing at the re-enactment of the jail scene from the ride. rotl

This is definately a buy for me on DVD.

Saw this last night. Great summer movie, fun flick. Reminded me of the Mask of Zorro from 5 years ago (same scriptwriters on both, I believe.)

I read in the local paper that Depp based most of his character on Keith Richards. After watching the movie I can believe that. (As crazy at that character was, the scene where
Spoiler:
Will makes fun of Depp's character
was halarious.)

The ending was a surprise with
Spoiler:
Depp's character turning into an undead pirate.
I kept wondering that throughout the movie at times, but I figured otherwise until that scene.

This is a film that's good entertainment and just plain fun. 3.5 out of 4.
