So the Blomkamp film takes place after Cameron's Aliens? Are we suppose to ignore Alien 3 which was actually written by franchise creators David Giler & Walter Hill? What a mess

I have a feeling Blomkamp will further muddy the waters on this.

After watching the cinematic garbage fire that was Chappie (not to mention Elysium), dude shouldn't be allowed to touch a franchise like Alien with his fan-fic.

This has been known for quite some time now after those Ripley and Hicks concept pics came out however long ago.

Alien was created by Dan O'Bannon and Ron Shusett. Giler and Hill were merely producers on the first film, but they decided O'Bannon and Shusett were shit writers who got lucky, and elbowed them aside for the sequels. There's extensive coverage of this in the documentaries in the Alien Quadrilogy box set, and Giler and Hill, even in their own interviews, come across as assholes who made the stupid decisions that drove the franchise into the ground.

It makes sense that Ridley's Alien film goes first. Forget that he has a lot more clout and directed the film that started it all, dude is pushing 80, its a now or never situation.

Even though 3 & Resurrection were crap, they still fucking exist. Like someone already said, this franchise doesn't need the waters getting any muddier.

That said, I have very little interest in either film. Prometheus was pretty disappointing and Blomkamp is 1 for 3 directing feature films if you ask me.

Hard to believe once both films are made there will be 9 fucking Alien movies.

That was in the those quadrilogy documentaries? I never got that impression, though. Granted, it's been a few years since I watched them.

So? Just because they exist doesn't mean they have to remain in continuity. Do you think Rocky Balboa would've been better if it hadn't ignored Rocky V? Do you think what was missing from Superman Returns was an acknowledgement that III and IV happened? Do you think Star Trek was hurt because it never referenced Spock's brother Sybok after The Final Frontier?

Blomkamp has taken the biggest nosedive as a director since Shamalan. District 9 was brilliant. Ellysium was a mess and Chappie was unwatchable.

Elysium sucked and Chappie sucked less. District 9 was great but he also had Peter Jackson watching his back on that one.

Went to the Aliens cast reunion panel at Comicpalooza in Houston today. Lance Heinrikson was the only big name missing (was scheduled then had to cancel), Apone (Al Matthews) was also a no-show. During the audience QA Sigourney Weaver was asked about the new Alien project and if she could talk about it at all, and the mentioned that That's about all she said she could share.

Paxton was pretty hilarious, when the guy asked about the new Alien movie Bill chimed in "We're all f'n dead!". The stories about their auditions were interesting and funny as well with two of them Spunkmeyer (Daniel Cash) and Frost (Rico Ross) having passed on potential roles in Full Metal Jacket to do Aliens.

That would have been awesome! After hearing a few of the actors on podcasts, I am jealous! Can we get a cast commentary for Aliens? I'd gladly buy it for the fourth time!

I'm not really a fan of just ignoring the events of the other sequels, i'd hope they come up with some sort of explanation... even if it is a little hokey.

Maybe the Prometheus prequels will bring out that little known fact the aliens can time travel between alternate realities. Then boom, multiple Ripley's.

The whole premise of Alien Resurrection was a little hokey, to put it mildly. Terminator just did this post-Cameron retrofit and it was fine. I have no problem with them continuing the crew of the USS Sulaco's story without providing any other explanation.

NEWT: Ripley, you lied. We do dream in hypersleep.

RIPLEY: I know baby, I know. But I bet mine was worse than yours...

HICKS: It can't be worse than my dream about Hudson owning a chain of deptment stores in Utah and having three wives.

NEWT: ...

So is this going to become the new trend whenever bad sequels are made? Let's just pretend they don't exist and continue making more films that pick-up the story wherever we feel like it should pick-up. Talk about lazy excuses for bad filmmaking and milking people's wallets..

I'm with you Inri. I don't have an issue with not directly acknowledging poorly received sequels (which I still don't think are that bad) but to go back into the middle and create something that completely negates their existence? I can't believe I am going say this ... Just reboot the original and start over.

What if Lucas decided he didn't want Vader to be Luke's father, so he made a new set of sequels that picked up where Star Wars ended?

I believe shit like that is called "fan fiction".

Or retcon it like they did with Days of Future Past at least. At this point Alien 3 at least is well liked among fans of the franchise, especially after the producer's cut was released.

Here you go: Alien^3 and Alien Resurrection are in-universe movies fictionalizing Ripley's adventures. This can be explained with a couple of lines of dialog about "that movie they made where I had a shaved head, but at least it was better than one where I was cloned and had a big alien baby."

I've got no problem with a soft reboot, Alien and Aliens deserve a better sequel than the ones we got. I won't miss Alien Resurrection or even Alien 3 at all. If Alien 3 was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson instead of David Fincher, it'd still be regarded as poorly as it was during its release.

I went through them last week and certainly got the vibe that the producers took the lion's share of the credit for Alien's creation. O'Bannon told a story of being denied clearance to view the dailies because one of the producers said he wasn't privileged enough. You know, despite the fact that he co-wrote the fucking script.

Giler (at least I think it was) came across as pretty clueless about science fiction. His big beef with the original script of Alien 3 was that it took place in a wooden monastery. He mentioned that it would be too confusing to a general audience because they would be wondering how all that wood got on the planet. I suppose he meant that it didn't seem science-fictiony enough, but I found his rationalization pretty amusing.
