Is Prozac Nation not coming to the US anymore?
Every few months, I would take a look at imdb.com to see to see how much the release day had been pushed back for Prozac Nation. It seems like everytime I looked, it would be pushed back another few months. But when it came time for the check today, I didn't see it listed at all. Did it get a bad screening and now it's not coming to the US at all? I would have just got the DVD by now, but no country has released one...
Thanks for any info.

Sorry, I don't have any real information, I just couldn't resist making a comment:
I think they decided the people of the US wouldn't sit thru a reality show about themselves unless there was voting or bugs involved.
Again, sorry...

Now that it's out on DVD here in the US, has anyone seen this yet? I just watched it today and was quite underwhelmed by it. Ricci's nude scene is near the beginning of the movie and the rest just felt like an after school special on Lifetime or something. Not sure what all the hoopla was about over this one.

Yes, it's worth seeing because it is mildly entertaining and Ricci is good in it, but it's obvious why the studio never released this to theaters.
Catch it on cable (Starz i think) or rent the movie.

Showtime had it in their On Demand section a few months back... Christina's nudity aside, it really was a great film. Very emotional, and some of the best acting of the year. They should be up for awards, IMO...

Could someone try and explain to me what the director/writer was trying to say with the way they ended the film?
For better or for worse, it seemed like it was going to be a dark movie with no easy answers. Then the sort of threw in the issue of whether being on drugs is really "the real you" or just a drug controlling who you are. So, it seemed like there was going to be a message about how even medicated and doing better, that you were still dependent on drugs to deal with life.
But the very end of the movie, the Ricci voiceover says how things have gotten better, how she's writing again, and things seem to be ok. I didn't understand what that was about. It sure seemed like a "happy ending" and it was only a few moments after they had the scene at the pharmacy about her doctor being her drug dealer. She seemed genuinely conflicted still about whether she was really happy.
With that ending, it hardly seems like there was any doubt that she was much better off, so what would be the statement about being a Prozac nation be? That it's a good thing? I thought the whole point was that it wasn't a good thing in the writer's opinion.

Milo is saying that too many people are taking pills. I totally agree. A family member is like this. We turn to doctors for medication far too much.
Haven't seen the movie. From the reactions to it, "I'll see it sooner or later". Too much other stuff to see right now.

But towards the very end there is a scene with Ricci typing happily and the voice over cleary, in my opinion, contradicts the point Ricci made in the scene with her shrink and standing outside the pharmacy.
It was strange, but it was there. Ricci says how much better things are in her life, cites examples, and the voice over doesn't go on to give any BAD part of her life at that point.
I felt like that scene was confusing, because right afterwards we get the end credit where it lists how many hundreds of millions of people are being drugged up on these meds, but we're left with Ricci being better and "happier" than she ever was in the film.
I would have just been ok with seeing her that way and assuming that the audience could take from that what they wanted to, that the drugs were worth it or that they just masked the real problems, but that last voice over really leaves the audience with the impression that the Ricci character is happy with her situation, at least opposed to the way she was before the meds.
PS-It was nice to hear Ebert and Roeper mention the film in their video suggestion part. Neither gave it a review, but both said it was worth seeing and didn't understand why the studios screwed with the film by holding it back from a proper release. They both thought Ricci was good too.
