Bleh. I hate bumping old threads when I'm not even going to stick to the original topic at hand but...
I think with most action stars (Arnold, Sly, VanDamme, Segal) it's a given that they're bad actors. These guys will never star in a movie like the Godfather or Shawshank Redemption.
We see their movies because of their characteristics. Arnold is a musclebound freak with a really funny accent. Segal has a ponytail, snaps necks and talks really smooth (yeah, I'm still trying to figure out his draw). Vandamme has even worser english but he can do the patented VanDamme Kick(tm). Stallone has that droopy face and droopier voice. 4 guys, all in fit condition, all in absurd action films (commando, rambo, bloodsport, above the law). For christ's sake, it's the Magnificent 7 of the past except these guys all suck.
I think movie goers already know this so it's no big deal if Arnold couldn't "carry the emotions" or Van Damme "just wasn't believable as an Ameican soldier". Action films aren't about that (although T2 did disprove it a bit). Action movies are about just kicking back after a hard's day work and seeing some onscreen badass do his thing.
And for the record, Stallone biggest mistake in his career had to be when he decided Action films weren't for him anymore. I loved Copland but I understood why several others didn't. It wasn't the Stallone they loved. It wasn't the relaxing kick back movie people wanted. I doubt very much people would be pleased with Bozo the clown playing a concentration camp survivor in Schindler's List with full make up and all. Why even try doing a serious cop drama?
