I seriously doubt this movie will be on par with Soderbergh's Ocean's 11.

Oh it's not as good as Ocean's Eleven, but it's readily comparable.

I enjoyed them both greatly... but F. Gary Gray (while he has his moments) doesn't rival Soderbergh as a director... and the cast of The Italian Job isn't on par with the ensemble of Clooney/Pitt/Gould/Bernie Mac/Reiner/Damon. ITB's just a fun movie inspired by the success of O11.

My grades FWIW...

O11: 9/10
ITB: 7.5/10

Considering I'd rate Ocean's 11 about a 2/10 I think I'll skip this remake.

Odd, since Mark Whalberg was supposed to be IN Ocean's Eleven... maybe he's making up for it?

Calling it a remake would be an extremely liberal usage of the word.

...and Pants, knowing your posts, I'd definitely recommend that you skip this one. It's purely mindless entertainment - it just happens to be better than most of the drek that seeps out of Hollywood during the summertime... and for that, I'll give it credit.

The Italian Job (2003) is a remake of The Italian Job (1969) staring Michael Cane (hence my joke above that nobody got). They raced around in old Mini Copers in the original, now they race around in new ones.

How is that "an extremely liberal usage of the word" remake? THEY EVEN HAVE THE SAME TITLE AND CENTERPIECE CHASE SCENE!!!

I too viewed an unfinished print. I guarantee that there's still some minute editing to be done and some scenes need to be cleaned up... but...

I was very surprised. It's actually a very slick popcorn movie. Norton's not as bad as to say that he's "phoning it in" but I can see that he wasn't exactly challenged.

Cool chase scenes, great supporting chemistry and some innovative camera work... particularly during the Mini-Cooper chase sequences. If you're a fan of Soderbergh's Ocean's Eleven, you'll find this to be great fun.

...and the shot in the trailer showing Norton foiling the heist, isn't exactly a spoiler. It happens within the first ten minutes of the film. It's only the prologue. The movie really starts when Marky Mark's funky bunch plan the heist to get the loot back. ...and like Ocean's Eleven the fun's not whether they'll pull off the job... but how they'll pull off the job.

...and again... just don't think too much.
I too saw an unfinished print in NYC the other week. And I have to agree, when I walked was viewing the film, Oceans Eleven came imediately to mind. A great popcorn flick.

This can't be a positive thing... from IMDB:

Edward Norton has made it clear that his participation is a result of contractual obligation, not choice.
Nothin' like watching an actor in a film who really doesn't want to be there.

Oh I got it... and am actually a fan of the original... and even though it uses the same centerpiece chase scene... the movie is as much a remake of the original The Italian Job as last year's I Spy was to the television show.

If you saw it, you'd understand what I'm saying. Nothing about this movie - besides the Mini's - reminds me of the original.

Yeah, he looked bored... but Mark Wahlberg always looks bored and we're fine with that.

It's not a positive thing, but I guarantee you won't much care. His nonchalance comes of as slimy and stupid - his characters most important qualities.

Uhh, he wasn't talking about Marky Mark but Eddie Norton.

Man, apparently my ability to form coherent sentences has left me.

I was talking about Edward Norton too. I just meant that since Marky Mark always looks bored... one more bored-looking actor won't be that hard to stomach.

Man, that looks bad. It really does look like both marky and edward don't want to be in the film. I don't blame them as it looks like a big turkey.

I have to say though...

Seth Green's delivery of "I got the... HOLY SPIRIT!" is hi-bloody-larious.

Even if he did the job out of a contractual agreement doesnt mean the performance cant be good. Im sure a ton of performances by all actors have some alterior motive behind them, im sure everything isnt done for the "art".

I quote Kevin Spacey from Time magazine (issue 17/02/03): "Sometimes, even if I don't like something, audiences might. There's no reason that I should take away their experience just because it wasn't mine -".

Exactly.

Norton's fine in this role.

It's just not Edward Norton of Primal Fear and American History X.... so people just want to stir up controversy by being overly critical. He's not challenged by this role... that's obvious... but it does not detract from the movie.

It's still just a really fun movie.

The Italian Job (5-28-03)

Last Friday, I saw a pre-screening of The Italian Job.

I'm not gonna give any spoilers. This movie was definitely a very fun movie. Since it's a "heist" movie, it has a lot of clever sequences. Think Ocean's 11 with action.

Pretty good performances by most actors: Mark Wahlberg, Seth Green (he was hilarious), Mos Def, Ed Norton, and Charlize Theron (dam was she hot in this movie).

I also have a newfound respect for the BMW Mini-Cooper. That car is ill cuz it seems like it's easy to handle and since it's so small, it can go anywhere.

Can't wait for the DVD to come out for this to see all the special features.

I too saw a screening of this last Monday in L.A. at a press screening. It's dumb, but a lot of fun. Especially the final 30 minutes the pace really kicks into high gear. I enjoyed it, just don't take it seriously.

The trailer looks good. I wonder if it'll withstand the summer
box office onslaught?

The tagline for this film should be:

"The Italian Job: This Summer's Bad Company!"

The original (which the remake will probably hold no candle to)
Is available on dvd as a special edition in england.
The dvd has a great documentary and commentary.
When it finally makes it to the U.S. it probably won't have those features as they are listed as "Exclusive" to the u.k. disc.

I will see the sequel out of curiousity.
One question...

Why does mark wahlberg insist on only being in bad remakes to good films nowadays? (planet of the apes, the truth about charlie, the italian job)
