So I got my reserves from the library and will probably tackle at least some of them this weekend:

Wake the Devil, Seed of Destruction, Conqueror Worm, and The Right Hand of Doom

So, in what order should I read these (or does it matter)? Should I go by the publishing order, as listed by Tuan Jim?

From the ones you have: SoD, WtD, RHoD, CW. There's another compilation book that either goes between SoD and WtD or after WtD, but it doesn't add all that much to the overarching story -- those are the main arcs. It'll help if you do read it occasionally (new characters and the like), but no biggie. I just think you should buy them all if you like 'em ;p

If your a fan of the comic from the beginning like I am, or know anything about it at all. Then there is no debate, these are the most faithfull & accurate images EVER, of a movie bringing a comic book to life.

jasonbird 05-30-03 09:11 PM

I've never read the comic, but I do read comics, and am aware
of Mingola's Hellboy, and from what I know, theses look really
good. I might pick up a few before the movie to see whats up
with this character.

Josh-da-man 05-30-03 11:56 PM

Daaaaamn.

That looks really amazing, pretty much what the characters would look like if you met them on the street instead of the page. Really good job, considering Mignola's minimist style. It's a testament to both his strenght as an artist, as well as the film-makers ability to interpret the characters.

I'm impressed.

 Absolutely! They couldn't have done a better job. I really hope that the actual film is as good as the character realizations.

Goldberg74 05-31-03 04:18 PM

Disney totally butcher Mignola's style in Atlantis... this is much better...

(I haven't read that much Hellboy, but I adore my Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser set... Mignola is a genius when it comes to minimalism.)

I am proclaiming myself the #1 DVDTalk Hellboy movie fan. I've been pushing this movie here since the cast & director was first announced. Hellboy is my favorite comic book & Del toro is my favorite young director. This movie looks perfect, the special effects are perfect, the cast is perfect & the director is perfect. All this movie needs to do is Blade like Box Office, which I think it definitely can to be a hit.

Morf 06-23-03 02:11 PM

Is there a Hellboy trade paperback that includes his origin story and the like? I never got into Hellboy, but I sure would like to.

Hellboy: Seed of Destruction. From what I've read, the movie will be adapted from the storyline here.

I dispute!!! (in a friendly way)

I was practically weaned on the milk of Yog Sothoth and know the date and year that it (as Iak Sotot) the lloiger escaped from its geometric constraint. (many know this date)

This comic has spoken to my heart. It brought to light aspects of our un-recognized reality in a manner that employed humor and phenomenally great art.

I just hope Lobster Johnson gets a bit part so that 6 months later, someone at least knows who I was supposed to be at Halloween.

Guillermo is my favorite as well, I love bugs as well as comics (classic geek, I know) and he did them right in Cronos and Mimic. I loved Blade 2 and la Espinoza de Diablo. David Fincher got overtaken when he decided to bed for public approval. Just my oppin…ION!

DonnachaOne 06-26-03 01:43 AM

I just hope they can ACT underneath all that makeup.. the Abe Sapien make-up on the face doesn't look too flexible.

I'm looking forward to this film. While Nazis in real life are disgusting and deserve a good beating... they're pretty damn badass on screen.

Abe's actually a CGI character a la Gollum from everything that I've read. They've made him look considerably more fish-like in the movie.

elias 06-26-03 06:42 AM

I'm not a fan of the Hellboy comic but the images of the actors in make-up are impressive.

It is funny though that you can't hide Ron Pearlman, even under all that red make-up.

Stoolie 06-26-03 07:14 AM

Looks....interesting.

spainlinx0 06-26-03 11:50 AM

Well not a big comic book person, but I like these pics, and I like Del Toro so I'll definitely be looking out for this one.

I am just happy to see there is someone out there as psyched for this movie as I am, & someone else that appreciates the brilliance of Mignola's vision & Del Toro's talent. BTW, have you been licking up the Hellboy: Weird Tales series? It's just not the same seeing other creators do Hellboy.

fumanstan 06-26-03 01:24 PM

The pictures look good, but i've never really heard of Hellboy. Wonder how this will do at the box office, as i'm assuming quite a few people have no clue about the character.

He's credited on the IMDb as Doug Jones, who's worked with Del Toro before. I was thinking that it's be like Serkis' work as Gollum, but looking up Jones' credits, he has quite a few instances of being a charcater under heavy makeup.

Dr. DVD 06-26-03 02:23 PM

That's damn good make-up, I'll give them that.

Cosmic Bus 06-26-03 05:18 PM

Dunno if this was ever posted before, but there are some more pics and video footage (albeit low quality) right here that appear to have beentaken at some sort of convention.

DodgingCars 06-26-03 05:25 PM

What's the storyline (basic) of Hellboy? Never heard of it.
