My first thought was FIELD OF DREAMS. But the film is really about so much more...

I'd have to go with the original BAD NEWS BEARS. I just watched it recently and it still cracks me up, plus I think the point about parents and children is still as strong today as it was back in the 70's...

THE SANDLOT is a good one as well. The first time I saw it, I knew nothing about it and had a lot of fun with it...

In terms of drama, I'd go with Field of Dreams or The Natural.

In terms of comedy, Major League 1.

In terms of a feel good story, Angels in the Outfield.

You left out "Eight Men Out" though. I don't think it's the best, but it's a well-made film. My vote, however, goes for "Field of Dreams."

As for baseball, has anyone purchased (or viewed) any of the World Series videos from mlb.com? I'm specifically interested in the Yankees videos and whether or not they have the same content as the VHS videos and (hopefully) additional material.

I was actually just going to post a new thread for my question, but I thought I'd sneak it in under your thread. Hope ya don't mind.

While I voted for Bull Durham as the best film (quality-wise), my favorite is the first Major League.

Missing from the list is a film many critics consider the best baseball film of all-time, The Pride of the Yankees.

The Natural... capturing IMO the true esence of the feeling of baseball. The writing and emotion Hobbs feels when playing comes across beautifully. However, D.B. Sweeny's performance in Eight Men Out also merits highly as a simple man who loved the game so much he would play for nothing. Veyr tough decision.

No mention of The Babe or Cobb huh? ...

There are so many. I went with Field of Dreams though I love Bull Durham and even the bare bones Major League. Sooner or later I'll have to see Ken Burn's baseball since I hear it's great.

Just about all the ones I've seen from this list are great.

I'd probably rank my favorites like this:
Angels in the Outfield - unfortunately non-anamorphic and barebones
Major League - unfortunately barebones, even more so than Major League II which is also fun
Field of Dreams - great movie, but non-anamorphic A/V quality is kind of poor, haven't watched the documentary yet, but I look forward to that.
The Sandlot - great fun and a nice DVD, particularly for its price!
The Natural - awesome movie, love that Newman score and the wonderful imagery; documentary's really quite lame

So by no exact science, I voted for The Sandlot. Another good one is The Rookie.

I would have voted for that one.

The only other one I've seen is Bull Durham, so I voted for it by default.

Ken Burns' Baseball without a doubt is THE essentail DVD set about baseball.

Of the ones listed, I went with Bull Durham because it catches the reality of baseball better than any of them.

Also, no one has mentioned 61*, which was excellent.

Princess 9 - all time best baseball series on DVD. The drama alone beats all those other films hands down. I went in expecting a fun little show and was totaly blown away towards the end.

There's a reason that this has been a fan favorite sleeper hit.

Movie-wise: a toss up between Field of Dreams and the Natural.

Another vote for FIELD OF DREAMS - yes, it's about much more than baseball, and is a movie that even non-fans would appreciate - but it also is the movie that captures the mystique of baseball, and its place in American history.

I voted for The Natural which barely beat out Bull Durham and Field of Dreams. All three movies are among my most watched discs.

I voted for Major League because it is very funny and gives me hope that a bad team with bad owners can eventually win.

Also, The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg is an interesting documentary but not on the list above.

I'm not going to vote, since there are too many to choose from, and too many exclusions (League of Their Own, Pride of the Yankees, the Ken Burns documentary). To be a meaning poll, all the viable choices have to be available.

Also, I would have a hard time picking my favorite. Of the baseball movies on DVD, Major League I and Bull Durham are probably my favorites. However, my favorite baseball movie of all time is not available on DVD: It Happens Every Spring. Another of my favorites, the original Angels in the Outfield, is also MIA.
