Hot damn, that looks pretty cool.

I caught shades of "The Rocketeer," which has a visual style I've always loved.

I'm there.

Kinda like "Rocketeer" meets "Crimson Skies" meets "War of the Worlds" and "Iron Giant" -- dunno how you can go wrong with a combo like that

I'd seen Harry over AICN getting his fanboy drool going on this flick for a while and my radar went off....anything he salivates that much about usually sucks, so I just ignored the whole thing.

But that trailer is pretty damn spiffy. The visual style from the trailer is truely outstanding. It has that retro-futuristic look which can be very cool when done right.

It's a first time director/writer, so I'll be very wary of the director not only being able to sustain the style, but also making it work with an entertaining and compelling story instead of replacing it wholesale.

That looks damn cool

Just completed watching this movie. It took me 3 days, the plot and pacing was so dull that I had to watch it in sections. I actually watched the Making-Of documentary "Brave New World" which is close to 1 hour long and the story about the 3D animators was way more exiting than the actual movie.
I love the look of the movie and the 1939 New York Sci-Fi mix alas Fleischer's Superman was something that was never translated into film and i was looking forward to it oh well..

What a bump. I love this film's style enough that I give its plot a pass. It really has some stunning visuals and ideas. Bringing Olivier back to life was geniously weird and I imagine we'll have a lot more of that in films in the future as technology improves. I normally don't like CGI heavy films, but this film has such a "home made" asthetic that I really enjoyed it. This came out within weeks of Team America and I really love both those films for their vast scope/personal vision.

My chief memory of Sky Captain was sighing "wow, this movie sucked" during a Comic-Con screening and then realizing the director was behind me. I was impressed by the ambitiousness of the project but it wasn't a good film.

When I saw SALT, I raved about Angelina Jolie's performance and then tried to think of another film I'd seen her in. I couldn't recall one, so I went to IMDB and looked her up and then realized this was the one other film of hers I'd seen. I recall thinking that I thought Jolie was the best thing about it and wondered why anyone would cast Jude and Gwyneth as leads in anything! I hated the look of it. It was so ugly. No color! I remember the TV ads for this had more color in them than the actual film and I then learned that they deliberately color-enhanced the TV trailers to fool viewers.

I liked the movie, it reminds me of a Indiana Jones type flick, just a fun 2 hours.

I'm still trying to figure out how you can give somebody the plot to a movie without any spoilers. :hscratch:

I think one of my biggest turn off was Gweneth Paltrow, if I have to take a wild guess it seemed as she was very uncomfortable acting against a blue screen, more than often she was just giving blank looks also she was annoying so I wanted her to die.

Picked this DVD up in a WalMart bargain bin for $4, 8 months ago, it took my wife (and me) 106 minutes to watch this movie in one sitting, we both thought it was tremendously entertaining and worthy of a rewatch in good time. I wouldn't want to watch all my DVDs in this color/style but this flick wasn't bad at all. I guess you just have to like this type of movie. -kd5-

I remember that Ebert gave it four stars. I believe that's one and a half stars per Jolie's boob, and then one star because he kinda' liked it.

"Sky Captain" was the "TRON" of the 21st century. Whether that's a good or a bad thing is entirely up to you.

I've read that comparison before and I 100% agree. I can see Sky Captain having a large cult following and inspiring a lot of people within the industry or who want to work in the industry.

I love the retrofuturistic look of it, I just think they got lazy with the plot. Anyways I'm keeping my HD-DVD copy of it because I know this would be a movie that my future kids will be mesmerized by.

I'm hoping the pendulum will swing back by then, so the kids will react to it like this: "Oh, dad, that looks so fake. Why are all the movies you like so phony-looking? Can't we watch MEAN STREETS again instead?"

Did this technology ever get used elsewhere? I can't remember what it was, but I saw a trailer recently (past month or so) and it really reminded me of the style from Sky Captain.

It's been seven years and no one's been able to solve that riddle. :(

Holy thread resurrection Batman. Reminds me, I have to see this movie again sometime, didn't think much of it last time.

I clicked on this thread thinking...this couldn't possibly be about that Sky Captain film from days of yore?

Alas...
