re: What Happened to John McTiernan?

Director John McTiernan may have three excellent action films on his resume (Die Hard, Predator, and The Hunt For Red October), but that resume only consists of 11 feature length movies. In fact, the last film we received from the legendary director was 2003's Basic. Since then, McTiernan's career has gone as silent as the Red October (partly due to his incarceration, which he continues to protest).

As such, you would think that the first John McTiernan directed live-action piece in 14 years would be a cause for uproarious celebration that would have genre fans lining up around the block. Instead, that release took the form of a Ghost Recon: Wildlands trailer quietly uploaded online earlier this year.

^ Neat promo. I would be more excited if it was a trailer for a new feature length film.

Good to see him back doing ... anything. I'd look forward to anything he does.

Fun fact: John McTiernan is the very first director's name I ever memorized (I was 10-or-so). That was the beginning of my awareness of what a director is, and how a movie is produced.

I always wanted McTiernan to do a Bond movie. He's got the right style for it.

Give him a good script and he'll make a great movie.

I didn't realize Basic was the last film he did. Personally, I LOVE that movie.

Can't read the articles for or watch the trailer yet, but ... a video game movie doesn't inspire confidence. What has he been doing for the last 14 years?

It isn't a video game movie, it's just a live action trailer for a videogame.

Re: What Happened to John McTiernan?

^Thats what I get for not reading ...

To make amends, I just read the Wikipedia page on McTiernan. I'm not trying to justify or dismiss his actions, but man ... that is one hell of an effed-up shitstorm. It does seem excessive, however I don't know all the details.

Edited to add: I just looked back a page and saw that I asked back in 2014. Damn I'm lazy.

I find it delightfully ironic that McTiernan hired a guy to illegally record people, and the same guy also recorded McTiernan, and that recording is what proved he'd been lying and got him sent to jail.
