Yes! I knew there was another R-rated big opener besides Hannibal. Thank you much for reminding me it was 8 Mile.

I've run many a fine thread into the ground by monopolizing it with my anti-Eminem rants, but I'll just say that if 8 Mile made about / at least $40 million opening weekend (again, too lazy to go to IMDB to check), I'd expect The Matrix Reloaded to supersede that by plenty; an extra $15 mil would be the very conserVatiVe end of my projection.

It'll make more than $50 opening weekend, period. I may be a bit, uh, conserVatiVe, on saying about $75 million, but whatever. I also thought Titanic wouldn't make any money.

I have to agree. Taking into account that the first one was no barn buner at the box office, plus the "R" rating, this film at most will make 70 million on opening weekend. My guess is 63 million. Total domestic take will be 240 million. This film doesn't not have the kind of following Star Wars and LOTR does. It has a following, but nothing that rabid and nothing on that large of a scale.

I could be wrong, but I don't think I am.

There obviously won't be anything further either of us can say on the issue, but if both Hannibal and Eminem can rack in $50, I feel very safe saying this'll surpass both of those by an extra twenty million.

Then again, there are factors no one can weigh in on quite yet. That is to say, the running time. If it's another Gods and Generals (IE: one showing per theater per night), it's obviously going to have detrimental effects on ticket sales. Then again, it could be like a Phonebooth, running in at an amazingly brief 75 minutes.

I'm not saying it'll turn out to be like either case, but just a thought.

While the Matrix may not have the following of Star Wars or LOTR, i think it appeals to a wider range of people. To me, Star Wars and LOTR are more 'geek' oriented, and while there's a fair share of Matrix geeks its also thought of as a 'cooler' movie and gained quite a large amount of fans after its box office run thanks to DVD, word of mouth, and imitators.

Also, i think the trailers released for the Matrix Reloaded have garnered even more interest, especially the Super Bowl spot. Definatly a 'wow' factor that i've never seen before, except for maybe the Independence Day teaser.

Compared to the interest behind other 'R' rated flicks that have had big openings, Matrix Reloaded should crush Hannibal or 8 Mile pretty easily.

I don't know the exact number, but I would be willing to bet money that Matrix Reloaded will be the largest opening ever for a rated R movie. Anyone want to take that bet?

I think Matrix Reloaded will probably open in the 70-75 million dollar range. That is Friday to Sunday. Now since it opens on a Thursday, then a 4 day weekend take of around 100 million is possible. Total domestic take could be in the mid-upper 200 million range. Maybe around 260 million.

About the trailer...to me it wasn't as good as I though it was going to be. It showed some cool stuff...but nothing near much to say I was wowed by it.

100$+,250-300 mill total,even if its garbage it will get at least $75 opening and will beat out X-men also.

IMO its gonna be the best summer for action flicks,we got Matrix,X2,The Hulk,T3 etc.

Whoa....I don't think even WB execs are that confident.

Remember, Spidey was PG-13, Matrix Reloaded is R.
The highest R rated opening was somewhere in the mid-50's.

I think it'll easily take the R-rated record, but Spidey can sleep safe.

I would say 75-80 isn't completely out of the question.

I say $80-90 million from thursday to sunday, and that it will finish just under $300 million.

If it wasn't R I would say 100-120 first weekend, and just under $400 million total.

I still don't see how a PG-13 rating would help Matrix beat out the Potter flicks or Spider-Man, which have significantly larger fan bases.

I never said it would beat them out, just that it would make more money if it was PG-13 than it will with it's R rating. People under 17 will still get into it, however they will have to go through some hassle to do so (going with parents, sneaking in etc.) which will reduce the box office at least a little bit as some won't bother and those that sneak in will purchase tickets to another movie thus giving it their money.

Spider-man made 400 some million, I said if Matrix Reloaded was PG-13 it would make under that-- i.e. 300 some million so that's not an issue.

As for Potter, I don't know how much they made as they I have no interest in them. I could see matrix doing a little better than them (again without knowing what they actually made) if it was PG-13 as it might get more business from the young adult audience (i.e. 18-25 year olds) who like me write the Potter movies off as too kiddie.

So for Potter it would be kids, and adults with kids who read the boooks making up the core audience, and a PG-13 matrix would get kids, adults, and young adults, so it would be a tight race IMO. But I could be far off on that one.

At any rate it's commonsense that people under 17 are interested in the Matrix (especially the 13-16 crowd) and that a some of these won't see it in the theater due to the R rating, thus the box office will be at least a little less than what it would have been if it was PG-13.

Of course I'm not saying that it should be PG-13, I applaude the studio/directors for making the movie the right way and not censoring it just to expand the box office take.

that might end up being it's problem.
it might be too cold of a movie.
i have no doubt it has a brain, and it certainly has muscles...but does it have a heart?
does it have characters that a broad range of people want to spend time with and care about?

i have my doubts.
for that reason by the end of summer i will expect that X2 has done slightly better, and The Hulk will most likely best them both.
