Best sci-fi movie

ESB has laser guns and spaceships.
Boom, sci-fi.
Just like horses, old dusty towns and sixshooters make a Western.
The nature of the two genres is in the settings. To say that's it's a theme decision (sci fi teaches us about human nature), then The Shawshank Redemption is a science fiction movie too. Similarly, Westerns would cease to exist if setting doesn't determine genre... instead they would fall under crime stories, romance, etc based on each's plot.

Without reservation, argument, or doubt, the Star Wars films are 100%, Grade-A SCI-FI. Anyone who argues otherwise is just fooling themselves.
They ain't Science Fiction, however... and my vote went to 2001: A Space Odyssey.

My vote would be for Dark City, but out of the list, Aliens is my favorite.

There are some huuuuggggeee gaps in that list (as Gort, Robby, and Roy Batty would surely attest to). However, my all-time favorite is represented.

Here's some info on science fiction, sciffy, sci-fi, and sf from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America site. I tend to just call it sf because that makes it so easy--it's a lot simpler to know whether something is speculative or not, than it is to try to pinpoint what subgenre it is.

Star Wars/Empire are my favorites. Therefore, they are the best sci-fi out there, imo.

"Sci-fi" is zap guns, bug eyed monsters, starship battles like World War II aerial dogfights, and basically everything you think of when you think of a lot of "cheesy" futuristic environments.
Think "Fifth Element", "Independence Day", "The Last Starfighter", "Star Wars", etc.
"Science Fiction" represents an intelligent speculative look into the present, near or far future in which topical events, ideas, social morays, etc. are presented from a different perspective.
Think "Blade Runner", "2001: ASO", "Dark City", "Donnie Darko", "Gattaca", etc..
I'm not arguing that "sci-fi" is worse than "science-fiction" -- that's a matter of personal opinion. However, there is a difference.

No vote for Metropolis (Fritz Lang) or Akira ?
No mention also of Soylent Green, Planet of the Apes or The Day the Earth Stood Still neither
I mean when you -truly- like SF, SW is definitly not the way to go.
BTW my vote goes to Starship Trooper

I personally tend to disagree, i think that what best defines a genre is the comination of the formal and thematic elements. As a result, i personally tend to break up genres into a ton of personal sub genres, i.e. for me Star Wars is sci-fantasy, Aliens is sci-action, etc...
For me, pure science fiction is stuff like 2001 or Solaris, movies that are largely about introspection and reflection.
I voted for Aliens tho, watching part of that on tv was one of my earliest memories of watching movies.
