Most Underrated/Robbed Movies
As far as underrated, Spike Lee's X is number one on my list. This has to be one of the greatest films of all time as its depiction was superb.
In the robbed category I'd again go with X along with The Color Purple , and Requiem for a Dream as they all shouldve racked up at the Oscars.

Not quite sure what you mean by robbed. If you mean movies that didn’t win irrespective of the competition, I’d go with Chinatown, which was up against The Conversation, GFII, and Lenny.
If we’re considering the other nominees, then definitely Raging Bull; it lost to Ordinary People. Or maybe Apocalypse Now, which lost to Kramer v. Kramer. Ouch.
WRT Color Purple. I’m not much of a fan, though I am surprised it lost best picture. CP seems like just the kind of movie the academy loves to reward. I haven’t seen Out Of Africa, but IMO Kiss of the Spider Woman and Prizza’s Honor are better films than CP.

Another vote for Fight Club. I know it's not the least bit unknown, but it was definitely robbed IMO.
I also agree that Gattaca is severlely underrated.
A.I. was underrated too IMO (I know many will disagree with me on that one).

Seems like two seperate threads to me...
On the "underrated" side, I really enjoyed THE BOURNE IDENTITY. It was smart, stylish, well-acted and directed and it really kept your interest. Also on my "underrated" list would be films like THE BRADY BUNCH MOVIE and TOMMY BOY, which were critically derided but are now cult favorites.
On the "robbed" side... how about Denzel's performance in THE HURRICANE? Sure the film played fast and loose with history, but his performance is so overwhleming that in any other year he would have been a shoo-in. For films, I'd point to two obvious candidates... LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING and SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION. For LOTR to only get four "non-major" awards (out of total 13), and for SHAWSHANK to get seven nominations and not a single Oscar is a crying shame.

Requiem for a Dream, Traffic and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon were all robbed of the Best Picture Oscar by Gladiator. Twenty years from now these movies will be revered as classics and outstanding cinematic achievements. Gladiator will be just another big dumb action movie on cable every weekend.

to all the movies mentioned above.
