Need help with title of sci-fi movie

There's a movie I remember seeing when I was a kid (around 1990 or so, but the flick could and probably is older than that, I saw it on TV) that was about a future society where money was "your life", literally. If you wanted to buy something, you scanned your card (?) and "paid" with minutes, hours, days of your life.

Does this ring a bell to anyone?

Sounds like a great premise for a movie, but I've never heard of it.

Awesome idea for a movie. Would cigarettes be stackable?

Or, get that super Mercedes and die next year

Hmmm…like the others, I have no idea what this movie might be. The plot sounds somewhat reminiscent of the Twilight Zone episode where people sell their memories.

Independence Day - I paid $9 and it took 2 hours of my life that I wish I could have back

Actually, I have no idea, but it is an interesting concept for a film.

It sounds vaguely like the Harlan Ellison story "Repent, Harlequin! Said the Tick Tock Man."

Dang. I checked up HE's filmography for Harlquin and didn't see it, but a lot of his short stories were made into tv shows. That said, even though they did my two favorites ( "The Whimper of Whipped Dogs" and "I Have no Mouth and I Must Scream,") I still don't want to see them. I'm just guessing they'd be cheesy when the stories really weren't.

That's not it. "Repent Harlequin" is about a guy who dropped jelly beans into the gears of a society in which being late was criminal.
