I would have screamed bloody murder if Ben Kingsley had won in 2001 for that POS "Sexy Beast." I don't even know how he could have been nominated.

I didn't catch Jim Broadband's Best Supporting Actor Oscar-performance for "Iris," but its hadda be better than Kingsley's.

Did you really need to have that phrase preceded by "I think" or one of those lazy "IMHO" abbreviations to know? I'm just wondering because I see this kind of bickering a lot, of course, especially when it comes to people sharing reactions to popular entertainment. Thanks.
That statement I quoted about American Beauty is in NO way an opinion. It is stated straight on that it is a horrible movie. And I suppose calling a film a piece of s**t is also an opinion? That has been done in this thread too. I'm tempted to call FOTR a POS, but I wouldn't do that because I know it's not true. I would simply say that I didn't like the film and found it boring with little character development. Calling a film a POS, is stating opinion as fact, not to mention that is also taking the easy way out.

Hummmm.....very interesting, because Denzel has been shafted twice IMO. First for Malcolm X and second for The Hurricane. There is absolutely no way Kevin Spacey's performance in American Beauty was better than Denzel's in The Hurricane. I believe Kevon Spacey's best acting was acting like he deserved to win the Oscar over Denzel during his acceptance speech.
Simply ludicrous. Washington/Jewison's revisionist potrarit of a misogynist better than Spacey's rollercoaster turn? Lets pretend their performances are equals(and that's quite the stretch in my book). The fact that American Beauty was a vastly superior film to the 1970's TV movie that was "The Hurricane" is enough alone to put Spacey over the top.

And for 1992, I think Pacino deserved his award, as Academy showy as it were. I'd have given it to Robert Downey in Chaplin over Denzel.

There was a rumor a while back saying that Marisa Tomei's win for My cousin Vinny was a mistake but it was too late to fix the error... I personally was surprised to see her win .

Bugsy winning over Hook for best costume design. I mean c'mon! How difficult is it to go out and buy a bunch of 30s style suits at a vintage clothing shop? Hook should have won because fantasy costuming requires more thought. Plus they shaved Robin Williams. If that didn't deserve an oscar, I don't know what does.

That is not stated as opinion by any stretch of the imagination. That is stated as fact. I have no problem with people voicing their thoughts on what was a better film in their opinion. I do have a problem with people whining about their films being so great and the ones that beat them so obviously sucked and everybody must be stupid if they don't agree.

If that brought "down your day," too bad.
Ok. I had a little down time.

Do you expect anything more from a movie forum. You are always going to have people stating the most off the wall comments about a film. You must understand that, yes, these are people's opinions and live with it.

I just cannot believe that you think the comments on this board are anything but stated opinion.

I would never go onto a board where I knew no one and get overly offended by what they have to "say". It is completely a waste of a person's time to even let it get to them.

Calm down and lay back.

And btw, these are not the "their" films. These are films that these people adore.

Oh and another btw, Kevin Spacey wholeheartedly deserved his Oscar for American Beauty. He gave an offbeat, hilarious, and sincere portrayal of an average man living a mid life crisis.

She made Ghost work. This was a great supporting role that added humor and quirkiness to an otherwise dreary tear-jerker.

This was probably also backpay for "The Color Purple," where she was absolutely brilliant.

Ditto for Cher's "Moonstruck" Oscar. She should have won for "Mask" (or at least been nominated - her most impressive role) or "Silkwood" if we are speaking of best roles.

Add to this women's categories in general, and best supporting in particular, are traditionally quite flaky. Though it's mind boggling to think she beat out Lorraine Bracco in Goodfellas or even Mary McDonnell in Dances.

Broadbent's performance was superb. The only problem is that he should have been in the lead actor category.

You've taken a interesting stance Nature Boy. So you hold the actors responsible for the accuracy of their potrayals, huh? I suppose Russell Crowes' portrayal in Gladiator was spot on huh?

BTW I think Spacey was just a incident away from being a pedophile in his portrayal in American Beauty. Sorry, I found nothing interesting about a balding old geezer lusting after a young girl.

well duh.

Just because Spacey portrayed a man lusting after a 17 year old girl, shouldn't mean he should not have received the Oscar just because of that.

That is just a cop out for not understanding the film in general.

What you should look at is Spacey throughout the entire film, and you should not make judgements on that one scene without comparing it to the rest of the film.

With all due respect Conscience, you cannot say with absolute certainty what if any part of the film made me come to that conclusion. Frankly, I judged his acting overall throughout the entire film. And I still say Denzel's performance was better.

So maybe Spacey wasn't acting, maybe he really wanted to shag the young girl.

However, I can understand the titillation of seeing a old geezer lusting after a unattainable goal/the young girl.

Absolutely correct. That award was Denzel's all the way, until a smarmy sub rosa whispering campaign at the 11th hour of voting by people griping about the case, and not DW's performance, cost him votes. An utter travesty.

Denzel Washington last year. I think he's been very good in many movies, but thought that was a really cliched performance in a really cliched movie.

Most "make-up" Oscars I don't much like. For example, Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman.

A Beautiful Mind last year. Probably Chicago this year. Annie Hall. Denzel for Training Day. Titanic over L.A. Confidential. American Beauty over Green Mile, The Insider or even Magnolia (don't think it was nominated though).

Halle Berry...I had no problem with her winning it until she opened her mouth with that speech of hers.

I think a lot of people were annoyed with Halle because she played the race card. Then after that she wouldn't shut up about it.

I wish it was any other black actress but Halle Berry that won the first-ever Best Actress Oscar. Say, Diana Ross (Lady Sings the Blues), Dianne Carroll (Nadine or Claudine, I forgot the name at the moment) or Whoopi Goldberg (The Color Purple) - I believe they would have brought a bit of dignity to the honor upon acceptance.

I guess she lacked dignity and honor because she had the nerve to emote about how important winning that Oscar meant. Give me a break. Was she suppose to accept the award as if it were a everyday occurrence?

I found it refreshing to see genuine emotion displayed in proportion to the significance of the moment. You two are cavalierly overlooking the historical significance of Halle's win. Regarding the fact that NO Black actress has ever won that Oscar in the history of the academy awards.

Oh yes regarding "playing the Race Card" see comments previously stated.

Kim Basinger for LA CONFIDENTIAL.

All she did was look hot....that's all.

I think the mom who's daughter got killed was better and more interesting than Basinger's character....who BTW, wasn't even that important in the book.

Agreed. Completely.
