I thought it was an excellent movie.
to The Cloon. Very impressive directorial debut; a stylish movie with an offbeat script.
My only minor complaint was that the movie dragged just a touch leading up to the ending.
Top notch script, performances, direction.

I just saw this last night, and I thought it was great. This is certainly an impressive first outing for Clooney, but I'm interested to see what he can do in the future without Kaufman's screenplay. It was a visually stunning movie, Rockwell was fantastic, and all of the supporting characters did good jobs. I think some people might get bored or confused with the plot.
I can see what others have said about the movie dragging, but I think that's because the film is more about the development of Barris as an iconic character than
What I was really upset about was that I saw about 8 people walk out of the screening. This wouldn't be as bothersome to me if I didn't think highly of this movie and that the turnout was already disappointing for a 9pm Friday night show. I mean, I know people were bored during Gangs of New York (one man was snoring loud enough for everyone in the full house to hear), but I don't recall many people walking out.
Considering the earlier discussion of the slightly misleading ads for the movie, I can only assume that people were expecting something completely different.

This was a great movie in my opinion. I had already read the book so I knew what was going to happen mostly and it still entertained me. I thought it was a gutsy move by Clooney to go this way with his first movie. He could have chosen something safe, something easy to film and instead he stretched himself and took a few risks. Those risks paid off well for me at least.
I know that wasn't the majority view of the people who were in the theater where i saw this last night though. Several people left during the screening when I saw it just like angryoungman described above. And here is a snippet of conversation I heard four people who looked like they were in their mid-60s say on the way out.....
Lady: "That was the weirdest thing I have ever seen.....Would you recommend that anybody?"
Man: "No, it was horrible. I can't imagine why anybody would like that."
Like angryyoungman said, that kind of comments kind of gets to you when you just saw a film you thought was one of the year's best. But hey, what can you do.

Question...
Does anyone know who played Chuck's assistant on the Gong Show? I checked IMDB, but nada.
IF Jack is nice & in a charitable mood, maybe he can provide some screencaps from his...ACADEMY...SCREENER...
[BTW...Jack? Fix ya damn sig. The link is dead...

Confessions of a horrible movie. I can see that I am in the minority in my opinion of this movie. It ranks as one of the 3 worst movies I have ever seen. The only thing I liked was the parts on the sets of the game shows. Other than that, it was a waste of my time. Evidently, I wasn't the only one in the theater to think that because 6 people got up and left after the first 15 minutes. I had high hopes for this movie, but I don't ever want to think about it again. I now have to see How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days as payback for my fiance having to sit there and watch this crap with me.

I saw it this afternoon, and I wouldn't fall into the camp that feels it is the best movie ever, or of the year for that matter. But it is good, damn good, and a worthwhile trip to the theater, and a must own on DVD later on. Great performances, but I just didn't think it was the best of all. In the top 5 for sure, tho.
But one thing I did absolutely LOVE was we finally got to see
But I was wondering why we didn't see anything about the Gong Show Movie?

Overall, I'd give the film aboout 2-1/2 stars out of 4. Rockwell was uncanny, especially in the montage of "The Gong Show" bits.

To those who didn't like it: what didn't you like? And since I'm not the only one who saw lots of people walking out of the theater during this one, what do you guess those people were thinking? I can see how some might have been bored or not particularly enthralled with the film, but I don't see much reason for completely walking out.

I think people were expecting an action-type movie based on the ads that were run. Kinda like, "You thought you knew Chuck Baris, but....". When in reality it explored his development as a person, spy, sociopath(IMO).
BTW I thought this movie was very good. The friends I went with also enjoyed it (although they are film buffs rather than typical general public types). Definately a good start to 2003!

Posts like this remind me of a kid who has to write a paper on a book that he never read, he goes on & on but never actually get's into the subject matter of the book.
So don't be that guy, you know that guy, in a thread of nothing but praise, trash the movie, & never actually say what you didn't like

Now, don't be the kid in school who continues to ask "why" even though there is not reason to do so.

I finally saw this last night. Great movie, not the best, but great. I went with my girlfriend and because the ONLY thing she had ever heard about it was from those crummy ads, I had to give her a disclaimer. IMHO going into a movie with wrong expectations ruins more movies than anything else. She loved the movie the same as I did.
This was a 7:30 PM showing at a popular theater ($5.00 night even) and we were the ONLY two people in the theater. When the usher came in to give her little speech (why do they make those kids do that?) it was so silly we started laughing. Too bad, I think the type of people who would have liked this movie were turned off by the deceptive ads.

Saw this yesterday and thought it was great. Excellent performances, an offbeat story, great pacing, fun cameos. It's not the best of 2002, but definitely among the better. I gave it an 8 on IMDb for what that's worth.
The only people who walked out during my showing were an old couple who complained about the language - there is a very liberal use of F**k in the script.

This was a very good directorial debut(?) for George Clooney, but he did surround himself with good people both in front or and behind the camera.
The briskness of the Charlie Kaufman screenplay is a strong point of the film, it's able to intersplice "real" moments with a dash of "pure" conjecture that doesn't seem inauthetic or out of place given the product of Chuck Barris' fertile game show mind.
Was it all real, all fake, or somewhere in the middle? Who cares, it was a ride that unearths many of people's foibles and insecurities, uncovers the engine in Barris' mind that got him up in the morning (or not). It also allows the viewer to explore that self-destructive/paranoid side vicariously through Chuck's own tales, imagined or not.
Clooney does a really good job of melting away the scenes through the sets in the film in terms of conversations that take place between Barris and others. The look of the film also gives the viewers that off-kilter feeling of being in Barris' memory of events as he experienced them while never judging them.
Rockwell disappears in the role as Chuck Barris. There's maybe only one scene of his doing a bit of dancing that recalls his dance moves from Charlie's Angels, but other than that, he's truly solid in the role, his Gong Show antics were right on the mark. The rest of the cast are good (though most of the supporting characters are underdeveloped because, well, it is about Chuck, not about them).
Who'd imagine how racy the pilot for the Dating Game was given its inception in the 1960's. Loved the FCC riot act being given...aloud, it's almost worth the price of admission.
I give this film 3.75 stars or a grade of A-.

Just saw this tonight. Have to admit, I didn't like the first few scenes (the scene with the kids was a little disturbing), but then the film went WAAAY uphill. I hope Clooney directs again - he's a pretty good actor, but a better director. Visually, the film was marvelous - I am wondering if they used 16mm for some of the grainier looking scenes, or if it was achieved with filters or exposure. Sam Rockwell was great, and while other characters' subplots felt a little too trimmed at points, the performances were good all around. Plus, there is no 2002 movie that I have laughed harder at. A great film that is not getting the attention that it deserves.
