The Alamo(remake) - interesting casting....

This is the one Ron Howard passed on, now going to be directed by John Lee Hancock. The cast so far:

Ethan Hawke - William Travis

Dennis Quaid - Sam Houston

Billy Bob Thornton - Davy Crockett

Once again, thanks Doctor Gonzo for the post!

While the gentleman listed above are fine actors, my initial reaction upon seeing the casting was one of mild dissappointment. The casting leaves me a little cold. Billy Bob Thornton's stock is on the rise (didn't have far to go as I've always thought well of him) with me after seeing his various commentaries during this month's run of Westerns on TCM. Actually it's kind of nice to see him do a Western after listening to his commentary, but at this point I'm having a tough time picturing him along with previous actors who've played Crockett: John Wayne, Fess Parker, and even Brian Keith (who I thought should have played Bowie, with James Arness as Crockett). Quaid seems fine as Houston, but Hawke - though a fine actor - strikes me as a little young for Colonel Travis. So while on paper, the cast struck me as less than ideal, movies aren't made on paper (well I suppose they are with the script, dollars, etc. but you know what I mean) so maybe some magic will be found in the translation to screen. Anyway I am looking forward to the film and will certainly catch it on the big screen. Lastly, I think Russel Crowe was attached (though no longer) to this film when it was supposed to be a Ron Howard project. I wonder who's going to play Jim Bowie.
