I did miss Bond's CIA buddy from the last films. He was pretty cool.
I agree. I hope they bring back Felix Leiter in a future Bond film, if for no other reason than to let us know he's okay.

I actually was disappointed with Tomorrow Never Dies when I first saw it, but over time it has become one of my favorite Bond films
WOW...This is exactly how Tomorrow Never Dies worked for me. I disliked it when I first saw it, but over time, it has grown on me to the point where it is my favorite of the Brosnan films. Although Goldeneye is a close second.

Alot of Bond films I find I like better with repeat viewing, I will see DAD again, I enjoyed it the first time, alot more then TND, and TWINE, but I like those two in repeat viewing, so DAD will be a blast again.

I think they missed a good inside line when Q gave Bond his watch and said "That's 20, if I'm not mistaken." I wish Bond would have said "22 by some counts." It would have been a nice nod to Casino Royale and Never Say Never Again.

This was like the greatest Roger Moore Bond never made. The one liners, the outlandish cheese including set design, the hot American chick who seems too contemporary for Bond world, etc. I found it all very entertaining. But at the same time, they give it a slightly dark edge and pace it fast enough that the cheese never stops the movie dead in its tracks a la Moonraker & the nerdy fraulein.

The only thing I wasn't crazy about was Arnold's score. They went from a composer who didn't use the Bond theme enough in Goldeneye, to one that seems to only play endless variations of it. It completely loses its impact

I loved Eric Serra's score for Goldeneye.

Honoring the traditions of the past is cool, but being burdened by them and not being able to make it your own, is not.

question on Graves' explanation

The execution of the CG was weak, but it was very necessary for the stunt. I mean, they BLEW THE FACE OFF A BUILDING-SIZED WALL OF ICE AND THREW A MAN OFF THE SIDE AT THE SAME TIME. Can anyone who's complaining about the CGI explain to me how they could've done that practically without killing the man and drawing ire from every environmental group in the world?

I have to admit though, they probably need to figure out how to up the ante in doing practical stunts (or at least have FX that look like they were done practically). XXX probably had half the budget of the last 2-3 Bond films, but the enormous yet credible-looking stunts (esp the dirt bike stuff) blew away anything I've seen in a Bond film.

Anyway, I've got a question about the film. I couldn't quite understand the dialogue when
Spoiler:
Graves explained to Bond how he turned Miranda Frost or how he got her to work for him. I know M later said they were on the fencing team together, but Graves said a bunch of other crap that I just could not make out.

I think it was something about how she was like him and wanted to win at any cost. Maybe implying she was indebted to him for pumping her Olympic opponent full of steroids so she could get the gold medal.

I don't think it was just implied; it was pretty blatant. I think Graves said something to the effect of
Spoiler:
"Our weakness is winning at any cost. And when I had the real gold medal winner overdose on steroids, I had just bought myself my own MI6 agent."

ipkevin, I think that if they can't make it look at least somewhat convincing, they shouldn't do it. Not that I don't like the outlandish; there's a lot of other fantastical things they could have done. But if Tamahori had thought, "OK, we can't do this without it looking cheesy - what about if we did this instead?" There are many ways the final act could have been tightened up, and cutting the extraneous surfing scene is one of them.

I finally saw it tonight - and I have to say that I was quite pleased - it was much better than I thought it would be.

It was the funniest Bond film that I can remember - great one-liners and I loved the homages to the previous films in the series.

Great Villains - Gustav Graves, Zao,
Spoiler:
Miranda Frost

My only complaint was that they used too much CGI - this particularly annoyed me on the para-surfing scene that was supposed to take place in what they thought was Iceland (looked like Greenland to me) - they could have left that sequence out. And also
Spoiler:
Why in the hell did they have to get rid of Miranda Frost - they could have brainwashed her and turned her back to the good side - she was an excellent addition and I hated to see her leave so quickly

Overall - my second favorite Brosnan Bond - Goldeneye is still my personal fave w/ him as Bond. Liked the opening sequence and credits - Madonna's song could have been worse, but it could have been much better if they would just keep using Garbage.

That car was sweet - what was it? A Maseratti? (I haven't read any of the posts previously, sorry).

There was a subtle change to the traditional gun barrel sequence at the beginning where Bond walks out in the circle, shoots, and blood drips from the top....

Anyone remember what it was?
Yes, the bullet Bond shoots actually comes out of the gun and into the the audience.

i thought the movie was good for what it was meant to be: an entertaining action movie with hot women. it had some amazing action scenes, awesome cars, stuff blowing up, etc. my 2 biggest complaints.

Spoiler:
1. some of halle berry's lines were written/performed poorly, imo.
"who sent you?"
halle berry: "yo momma!"

sorry i just didnt think it fit too well.

2. the 2nd surfing scene that many others have complained about. that is about some of the worst cgi i have seen in a movie in a while.

all in all, if u are looking for good action, special affects, sound mixed with the traditional bond stuff, it is a good one to see.
I concur completely with your two complaints, especially #2. I was really surprised that it in a Bond movie, it looked so obviously fake. Still, the ride was worth the price of admission.

At the end, the movie really became cheesy when:

Spoiler:
They are all fighting on the un-piloted plane which from the outside looks to be totally engulfed in flames, yet when they go to an interior, there's not that much fire around the actors.

Great movie. The fencing duel with Graves was awesome! Easily the best action sequence in the movie.

Everyone seems to love Halle Berry. I personally think Rosamund Pike was gorgeous.

For those who keeping saying "The Madonna song really isn't so bad" I have to ask you this. In every other Bond movie you hear the Bond theme in other parts of the film. If the Madonna song isn't so bad then why didn't they use it anywhere else in the film besides the begining and the end credits?

I really enjoyed Die Another Day. It was darker than any of the movies Brosnan's done before. There were several surprises (especially the first 30 minutes or so). I would say it's the best one that Brosnan has done.

As with other Bonds, this is pure fantasy, except the lastest has become pure action - I think this is both for financial reasons and lack of ideas.

Those of you looking for all the references to the previous films, IMDB has them all listed here: http://us.imdb.com/Trivia?0246460

I really could have done with a few less things whizzing towards the screen (starting with the opening) and I think the gadgets are going way overboard. I mean, when they had a tracking device in Goldfinger it probably looked like sci-fi but its underlying technology was around. The new
Spoiler:
invisble car
, to me anyway, pushes plausibility.

I still liked the film because it never got boring but they could have done better.

7/10

Can someone explain to me what happened when Bond arrived in the Hong Kong hotel? I don't quite get what was going on in the room with the masseuse and the people in the closets.

They were Chinese (PRC) Intelligence spying on the spy and Bond let them know that he knew that they were spies, too, since they had been in Hong Kong for years before it reverted back to PRC control. He wanted Zao and the PRC wanted Zao - so he struck a deal w/ them to get Zao.

I saw it last night. I enjoyed it but I dont think it was that great.

My main beefs with the movie were that the action seemed to drive the plot instead of the other way around, Jinx and the other Woman were underdeveloped and there just because they were woman. I have a hard time believing that Halle Berry won an oscar. Here delivery of lines in things like this and X-men are just horrible.

The villians were stock and the only action scene I cared for was the ending one.
Better than the last one but I liked Tomorrow Never Dies much better.
