I thought both trailers were pretty smooth, with the edge going to the newest one. I'm kind of excited for this film now

Oh no, the two EXORCIST films are fairly different.

I like Renny Harlin. Driven was a stinker. But I liked watching Deep Blue Sea. And I thought everything before that was good. The guy DID bring us The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, and The Long Kiss Goodnight.

I just hope this doesn't lead up to a big, loud, explosive, obnoxious ending. That's NOT The Exorcist. But I have a feeling that's how it's going to turn out.

Yes, but both films share the same premise and the same lead actor. They're not entirely different really. So they will compare. Stellan Skarsgard as Father Merrin in both perhaps being the biggest connection, along with a similar storyline.

I don't have faith in Renny Harlin. I just don't.
I hate Renny Harlin with a passion. He makes Michael Bay look like Cecil B. fukkin DeMille. However, I have to see this film. If not just for the struggle it's had. I'll probably hate myself in the morning though. I will admit the trailer looks decent. But we've all been burned before on good trailers/bad movies. Looks like Harlin delivered the film Morgan Creek and Warner Brothers wanted. Things jumping out, etc. Still can't wait to see Schrader's movie too.

BTW, the official website doesn't even have this trailer up yet. How odd. They never even had the teaser. Cool site though otherwise.

I'll comment on the trailer later - don't have sound at work.

the trailer looks ok. I do fear the same thing as some of the other posters mentioned, that this will turn out to be a really loud movie.

I guess this movie could go either way.

Just watched the trailer with sound:

Very freaky, but here's my fear - I hope it doesn't get too campy (that's one of the feelings I got from the trailer) because that's not what these movies are about, they are about pure terror.

On the plus side, it looks like they stuck with the same freaky atmosphere as Part 3 which is more than a good thing.

With that said, I am excited for this and looking forward to it - that's about all I can say for now until I see it, even if it does not capatalize where 1 and 3 did, it's looking like it will have some memorable moments.

was there ever a trailer for the other version of this film? And is there a link to the first trailer for this film? What happened to that trailer that was deemed too scary or whatever?

This actually might be the one that was "too scary" considering the drawing on the wall they mentioned and what not but I don't know for sure.

I don't expect this to be any better than something like Stigmata or Lost Souls. Here's hoping Schrader's version ends up on dvd someday.

An Ode to Renny Harlin

Renny Harlin Oh my gawd Oh my darlin' What a clod! His awful turds Will get a reaction What Hussein did to Kurds. He does to action His apparent stupidity It has no equal He stripped the validity Of the first Die Hard sequel. Instead of action scenes That were tough and had a brain We get fakey blue screens Of John flying out of a plane. It's all so frickin lame. Our hopes Harlin shatters The cast looks so ashamed Even Carl from Family Matters. But lo! That wasn't it. We weren't left alone For Harlin made more sh!t. This time with Sly Stallone. The movie's called Cliffhanger. It co-starred Michael Rooker. It's like a herpes-laden wanger After screwing a she-male hooker. The many special effects Are supposed to be a WOW! But you'll only reflect About the chin on John Lithgow. Next came Cutthroat Island. A movie I did not see. For I'd rather go to Thailand And have a guy chop off my wee. It was a huge bomb. The public got it right But when you thought he was gone Came The Long Kiss Goodnight. Does anyone else here think That it was a monumental crime That despite its awful stink This was the best selling script of all time? What did Shane Black write That made people so giddy? "She says a joke and they fight. Man I'm so damn witty!" And if you thought "Hark! Renny couldn't be more gay!" See his film with the shark That starred LL COOl J. It's like a turd-topped waffle With a side of toilet scum. The shark effects were awful. Worse than that ad for Trident gum. Harlin is the pits He'll never be forgiven For turning out more sh!t This time it was called Driven. He's made so much dung. He's such a f-cking dope That he should be hung From his long hair, instead of from a rope.

There is one line in there that will probably offend some people.

I've read a lot about it, and all I can personally say, is I think it looks fun and possibly scary. Here's hoping.

Captainhowdy.com reports that Exorcist: The Beginning has been slapped with an NC-17 rating. They are trying to appeal but since the movie is to be released in about a month they will probably just end up cutting some of the movie. The footage will be on the deleted scenes section of the dvd instead of an unrated dvd version.

Exorcist:The Beginning-any reviews yet?

Since one movie that was trying to milk to tired series was #1 this weekend, I was wondering if another might do it next.

Seems like they have been shy about giving early screenings to these late summer movies. I have relatively low expectations for this one since Renny Harlin is at the helm.

The one thing I still don't understand is the Paul Schrader/Renny Harlin thing. Is this an entirely different movie? Or it's the Schrader movie with a lot of new scenes? Does someone have the full scoop on what this is?

I remember reading there are now two movies. A Schrader one and a Harlin one. Here's hoping they release both on DVD.

I think it was originally intended to be the Schrader film with new scenes lensed by Harlin in the mix, and it turned into a Renny Harlin movie with a few bits of the Schrader scenes thrown in.

An interesting experiment none the less....I'd be very interested in watching both movies at some point in time just to see where the path parted so dramatically.

On Sunday Aug. 15 on the E! cable channel they said that they will release the Schrader version also on dvd, cable t.v. ect.
Because they said the studio spent about $35 million on that version and the studio wants to recoup that money.

Good article on the history of the film:

http://www.laweekly.com/ink/04/38/features-foundas.php

“Like the original, this is a very adult horror film. It very seriously examines the issue of faith and God’s presence in people’s lives as deciding factors in whether or not justice takes place in the world.”

-- Renny Harlin on his Exorcist: The Beginning
