Guess whatever studio wants, studio gets. Shame that they basically threw all of Schrader's movie in the dumper in favor of the hack Harlin.

Thats pathetic. Maybe with the dvd we could get a Brazil-esque Criterion with 3 discs; Harlin cut, Schrader cut, and features. Then again the movie may suck donkey balls.

I'm not going to defend Harlin, but word was that the Schrader cut was atrocious. Check darkhorizons.com, as I believe the editor visited the Schrader set, so he might be able to provide a clue as to what is was like.

eyes rolling back into heads, spinning heads, projectile vomiting? sounds like the Harlin cut is aces. Why's everyone got a h.o. for Schrader? What's he directed that was so great? Besides - his name will still appear as the director, but not a single frame of his will end up in the final cut. Granted, Harlin's list of directing credits isn't very convincing either. I think after Cutthroat Island, he shouldn't have ever been allowed on a movie set again. Anyway - I don't see this news as any points against this films potential because that was already on the floor to begin with.

I'll bet $10 that NOTHING from the original cut of the film will make it into Harlin's film.

Yes, but he didn't write Exorcist. Also, if you read the article linked, it says that Schrader will retain a credit even though none of his footage will wind up in the film. I checked IMDB and Harlin will be uncredited. Sure it's IMDB, so it's unreliable at best - plus, even if that's true now, it could change later. *shrug* It certainly would be quite odd to have a director credit on a film you didn't have anything to do with in terms of the final result.

I only hope that they sort out who is going to be credited as director of this movie in time for next year's Oscars. Really, was anybody so eagerly awaiting this lame-sounding prequel so much that they care what's happening to it?

When I heard the approach Schrader was taking, I was very interested.

I dunno - I'm sure Schrader is a better director than Harlin - I'm not saying Harlin is good or anything... I'm just saying that this film had very little going for it to begin with, so it's hard to say it has even less going for it now.

Come on? Nightmare on Elm Street 4? Cutthroat Island? Driven? But I do enjoy Die Hard 2 and Deep Blue Sea.

Hey - you don't need to convince me - Cutthroat Island is one of the worst movies ever. I use it to gague how bad other movies are... "it sucked, but at least it wasn't as bad as Cutthroat Island". But yeah - I gotta say, I liked Die Hard 2... Deep Blue Sea wasn't good, but it was entertaining. I also liked Long Kiss Goodnight, Cliffhanger, and even Adventures of Ford Fairlane. In spite of that, I still admit that Harlin is a crap director.

Looks like the studio forgot that the original Exorcist was scary without being graphic. I'm guessing that was the feel Schrader was going for. I've liked many of Harlin's movies (Die Hard 2, Ford Fairlane), so I'll still be interested in seeing the movie - but I would loved to have seen Schrader's version.

From: A little bit here and a little bit there.
The difference between paul schrader and renny harlin is pretty simple.
One is a director, and the other is a filmmaker.
I'd rather see a film by paul schrader than a movie directed by renny harlin.
