This movie is a work of fiction...

At the end credits in all the movies I've seen, it says something along the lines of, 'The events of this movie are a work of fiction. The characters are ficticious and any resemblance to any person, living or dead, is entirely coincidental.' It's even there for movies which are based on real events and people. What is the purpose of the message?

So nobody can sue and claim it was their story that the people behind the movie stole from them... I'd imagine

Wazooty, You're correct sir!!

It's a disclaimer and the purpose it serves is just that, relieve responsibility.

You'll like the intro to Return Of The Living Dead.

What's interesting is that this disclaimer appeared at the end of Punch-Drunk Love but the

Spoiler:
pudding

sub-plot was based on an actual incident.

I believe I read that the guy that sub plot is based on was paid for his story.

You'll find that disclaimer on most books now too, although it's left off on many sci-fi and fantasy books because it's fairly obvious to the storyline that it's not based actual people, places, or events.

Stranger things has happen and actually made that work of fiction became a tale of "possible real story." And as hard as that seem to be, it does happen sometime and it really make you think.

Instead of at the end, they listed the disclaimer at the beginning of Boiler Room. I guess they didn't want to piss off anybody to early.
