I'm not counting the ones that got a limited, late 2001 release for Oscar consideration. However, some of these may have come out in 2001 overseas, or had 2001 US film festival showings, but their US premieres according to IMDB were in 2002. I hardly ever see anything in theaters (one or two a year) so most movies will take a while to show up on this list.

On 6/14 edit: Yes, the three A+ movies deserve that grade! And, true to form, The Grey Zone had its festival debut in 2001. Right now it's hard to tell which of the top 2 should be #1, so I figured alphabetical order was the way to go for now - and it's ironic that one is opposed to the existence of another! Awash in contradictions, yes sir. I will say this: I used to think that Schindler's List was the best dramatic portrayal of the Holocaust. No more - The Grey Zone is a much more worthy film.
