Actually, Marc, there is kind of an answer to the ending in Traffic, which I liked as well. At the end Del Toro is watching a baseball game. If you watch the movie again, one of the characters (I forget which one, I beleive the assassin) makes a comment about liking baseball, about it being the safest place in the world or something like that.

Also, note that it's a night game for the DelToro character's home team, the point being that he's been paid the bribe/reward he asked for in the pool...

The Empire Strikes Back

This is the most emotional ending I have ever experienced. It's the perfect ending to make you scream fo more.

... looking at the above, I'd totally forgotten FIELD OF DREAMS, which fits the criteria 100% - as the camera pans away you see ... well, a sight that (if the film's grabbed you) can't fail to bring a tear to the eye.

... what WAS the last line of WILLY WONKA?

... BOOGIE NIGHTS also fits the bill - just the image (unforgettable for some, an everyday sight for some of us lucky ones ) and then the credits

... others I really like are SOUTHERN COMFORT, which is an all-round excellent film, but the ending (slow motion, don't-know-what's-about-to-happen) rocks

... and call me soft but I've always liked the very last frames of ROXANNE with Steve Martin - the music's really tender, and oh it's all so HAPPY ...

Surprised nobody's mentioned Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid yet either ... best freeze-frame ending ever?

Oh, I forgot a great one. The Freshman (1990)...an awesome ending to an awesome film. Certainly one of the best comedy films of the decade.

Off the top of my head, The Searchers comes to mind. One of the best films of all-time too IMO.
