Yes, Diggstown was great. Forgot about that one. The whole move was great, very underrated.

Finally, somebody else who appreciates Runaway Train like I do ... Skywalker, I salute you.

If you also happen to be 21, female, large breasted, gorgeous and willing I may well also have to marry you.

Seriously, all out there who haven't seen R.T for ages ... go rent it and settle back. It's a lot better than you'd think and that ending is in a different class.

Mmm, I like this topic.

Twelve Monkeys ends perfectly.
Brighton Rock, my favorite film, has one of the most ironic stings in its tail ever put on film.
I thought the ending of Alien3 was a perfect way to end the trilogy.
The Ninth Configuration's ending puts tears in my eyes.
The Day The Earth Caught Fire - can't deny this one is at least memorable, if not great.
Titus - absolutely majestic.
The Sacrifice has a stunning penultimate scene.
I've got to mention King Kong.
I know some people hate it, but the ending of Dancer in the Dark is certainly affecting.
The Last Wave - the last wave.
The Usual Suspects, especially the montage, the editing and the music (thanks to John Ottman for both).
The Quiet Earth - oh man, what a staggering sight, and when what happened sinks in, nothing but sadness.
Does the ending of Night of the Living Dead not help elevate it to greatness?
FairyTale: A True Story - well, I thought it was a great ending.
Gallipoli's ending is a direct blow to one's heart.
I adore the ending to Orlando.

And, lest I go on forever, a special mention to the man who creates the best endings - John Carpenter. The Thing. Prince of Darkness. Escape From LA (the ending made the movie for me). Halloween. Dark Star. In The Mouth of Madness. Well, virtually all of his movies have great endings.

Glad you resurrected this thread.

I would also agree with Chinatown, Rosemary's Baby, and The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover, which have all been mentioned.

What about Brazil? Perfect ending to a perfect film.

The ending of Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc is beyond description, as is the film itself.

And the guiltiest of pleasures, with an out-of-left-field ending, The Last American Virgin.

I believe I have you all beat hands down.

Donnie Darko.
I can't even imagine a better filmed ending than that.

Lot of good ones mentioned. Two that I didn't see:

Basic Instinct
Arlington Road

Favorite of those mentioned is probably Usual Suspects.

I didn't include Donnie Darko because in my mind I was thinking only of the last few moments of a movie. The magnificence of DD's conclusion lasts for quite some time, and is diluted just a teensy by its length. Unless you were only thinking of
Spoiler:
the little wave Jena Malone gives to Mary McDonnell

Here's a few I didn't see...

It's a Wonderfull Life

Restless Natives -"Do you believe in Ghosts?"
(does anyone else like, or even know of, this great Scottish comedy?)

Spiderman (Toby Maguire version)

Jerry Maguire

True Romance

The Castle

High Fidelity

...I guess there are dozens of others as well but an internet cafe isn't the best place for me to remember them.

Well, Citizen Kane and The Godfather had great endings. They had great everythings.

The Third Man has one of the most challenging endings of any film. It's really remarkable, in that it's so difficult to determine whether the Cotten or Welles is the real hero.

I liked the ending of Fight Club as well. It's one of my favorite recent movies.

And for best comedy endings, throw in Life of Brian and Office Space. "I'm going to put strychnine in the guacamole!"

-CHASING AMY (Can't believe no one stated this)
It seems strange that in the 90s, a Hollywood film would not have a Hollywood ending. But, that is what helps to elevate this movie to become Kevin Smith's magnum opus. It always makes me kinda sad, but in the same way, I realize that that's the way life works.

-DR. STRANGELOVE
The ultimate ironic ending. This ending seemed to best encapsulate the ridiculous notion of mutual destruction. Plus, the end tune is classic.

-RUSHMORE
Makes me sad everytime I watch it. Max finally find happiness, and everything seems like it will be great for him. The Faces's song is a gem in itself that improves the scene greatly.

-FIGHT CLUB
By the time he defuses one of the twelve bombs, with only two minutes remaining, you realize that Tyler has already ensured his future. Again, the main character comes to terms with his life and finds love. And again, without the fine Pixies's song at the end, the scene would be nothing.

-CASABLANCA
Who would have believed that in the 40s, directors would be able to make such an ending. Everything that made Chasing Amy's ending great made Casablanca's ending great, but they did it first!

-FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS
The fabulous ending to a weekend bender. After dropping off his attorney and uttering the famous line "There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. Some kind of high powered mutant never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die. " He goes back to his hotel room, ponders the effects of his drug lifestyle and on the end of the 60s, while finishing his article. The scene with him driving down that lonesome highway with the flag flapping in the wind, reminds that we are all "just another freak in the freak kingdom."

The Empire strikes back is a movie that sticks out to me as having a fantastic ending. ( I shhould qualify this by saying i am NOT a Star Wars nut. Luke has his hand cut off by Darth Vader, the manifesteation of evil and hate in the world, who just so happens to be his father. Han Solo is captured and frozen in Carbonite and is being taken to the ruthless Jaba the Hutt by Bobba Fett. Luke learns he has a sister. The whole cliffhanger ending, was great.
