I know many people have caught this, but some did not:
That Digital Bits link describing the StarWars bootlegs is a year old. Its good, but again old news. Please read BadAshes reviews for information on the NEW versions. His is the best that I have found.
And yes, the quality IS between VHS and DVD. The real releases should be awsome!

Has anyone made (and have available for download) alternate covers for the trilogy? You know, kind of like the James Bond alternate covers. I would love to buy these but I would want to pick up some cooler covers as well.

To all, I really appreciate everyone's cooperation in limiting this thread's discussion to "review" of the DVDs. I think we all understand the rules here so lets continue on course so this thread stays alive.
Thanks!

I'm so tempted to get these, but I want to hold off until I'm certain I can get one with no subtitles, no video glitches and most importantly, no audio synch problems.

They are being worked on - by the same cut-and-paste artist who did the Special Edition ones. The formatting will be matching.
You can try submitting them as many times as you want to DVD Profiler, but they'll never be accepted. Although many people own these discs, unfortunately DVD Profiler doesn't support non-official discs.

What surprises me about this thread is that BadAsh has,

original Trilogy will never be “officially” issued
on DVD and there has been not one word of dissent.
That's a good point. I've been told that as far as George
Lucas is concerned, the SE is the only version of the
trilogy that exists. But I have no proof that he actually
said that.
One more note: We all know how the SE of Episode IV
("The New Hope", as my boot calls it;-) was mangled to
have Greedo fire first. There's also some more subtle
revisionism, such as laser blast gunshot wounds being
removed. There's a nice side-by-side comparison of the
original and the SE (16 frames or so) at
http://www.dvdfile.com/software/cut_...s_censored.htm
Seeing crap like this makes me glad that I got the boots.

covers? After all, I've seen links to stuff like Jaws 2
replacement covers. If it's OK, I'd appreciate a link.

When you choose DVD-Add To Collection - Add By Title, remove the checkmark from Download Profile From IVS. This will allow you to add a blank title to your own collection (does not get submitted to Profiler for others to use/update). You then have to fill in all the relevent info yourself (actors, sound, features, covers). I downloaded screenshots of the covers from someone's Ebay auction for the front/back images.

Wow! Welcome to page 4.
I can't believe it.
See, this just goes to proove that if you play by the rules and keep things on topic a "bootleg" discussion can survive on DVD Talk.
I would like to extend a warm thank you to all who have done their best to abide by the rules of DVD Talk and keep this thread going as a discussion of quality instead of "bootlegs" in general (sources, etc.).
Thanks!

I got the "Star Wars - A New Hope" DVD (which is actually mistitled "Star Wars - The New Hope") and was fairly happy with it. The picture is a little "soft" - not up to US dvd standards- the detail at times is not very crisp and could have better resolution - but it still looks pretty good in the widescreen presentation. Prior to buying this I only had the VHS standard screen editions, so this is an improvement in that regard. The sound is good as well. The image quality could be better, but overall I was happy with the disc. The main reason I bought this one was to have the original, non-special edition version of the movie, on dvd. Unfortunately Luca$ will never release these versions of the films on dvd, so we're forced to buy less than perfect import bootleg dvds to get the versions of these films that we grew up with. My recommendation is that if you hate the Special Editions and want the originals on dvd, buy these dvds. At least "A New Hope" is pretty good (I haven't seen the other two yet). If you don't mind the Special Editions, then save your money and wait until Luca$ releases them on dvd.

i just rewatched a few minutes of my vhs phantom menace that i got for a couple bucks used ages ago, and it just looks like a big pile of grey poo. i can't believe how suckee vhs is!! (i have never owned a movie on vhs before, and haven't rented one in 2 years). I also can't believe it was 'thx certified' yet sounded like my AM radio.
hell, i'd take a copy of Star Wars on a zoetrope b4 watching it on vhs again!
