Bang for buck? The American Godzilla movie can be had for $5.50 in the Wally World bargain bin.

Okay, they're not movies but here are a few music discs that have outstanding sound:

Criterion's Beastie Boys Video Anthology has kickin' sound... as in it will get you kicked out of your apartment at high volume

Hearing The Beatles remixed in 5.1 almost brought a tear to my ears. Give The Beatles Anthology a spin.

The Eagles: Hell Freezes Over has a great sound field. You feel like you're in the 3rd row.

All that they said are awesome. I personally think the pod race sequence in SW Episode 1 really rocks along with the Lobby scene from the Matrix. (these two scenes always get ooohs and aaahs from visitors.) I'll add a couple I haven't noticed anyone posting.

Fight Club
Pitch Black
The Mask of Zorro

Thought I'd revive this thread and ask the question that has a peppering of answers above.

I got a powered Subwoofer a few weeks ago (after 4 years of doing without) and the difference was immediate and amazing. I put in Finding Nemo (lucky accident) and almost broke into tears.

I just set up rears (for the first time) and I popped in The Matrix to test 'em out. Jumped to the lobby scene and the helicopter scene and there wasn't a big difference. That is except for the whoosh of the helicopter blades.

Any specific recommendations for DVDs (and scenes) where the rears are well used?

...yes, I know that is almost begging to get this moved to the Mature Forum.

Well, I culled this list since I appear to be a threadkiller...
The opening of Superman the movie -thru the credits has a very well concieved use of the rears

Anaconda SB has some great jungle ambient sounds

The Mask Of Zorro - when Anthony Hopkins is 1st captured, there are some very immersive sounds of thunder and rain- plenty of good surround material on this disc

Castaway as it makes great use of surrond during the plane crash as well as on the island with the surf and such.

id4 5* when the can gets shot off the plane. bullet whizzes all around.

George of the Jungle, where the announcers voice comes out of the rear speakers

The Patriot (Superbit - DTS) fantastic enveloping music and sound effects, one of my personal demo DVD faves even though the movie itself is flawed.

Signs is a great demo if you want surround action. especially when the family is trapped in the basement and you can hear
Spoiler:
the aliens running all around you

Chicken Run - Inside the meat pie machine, when the burners light up and revolve around the room

THX spot with the TEX the Robot

Pirates of Caribean - good surround plays

The Time Machine(new one) when the morlocks come out to hunt and capture people just rocks in DTS,you can hear the darts whizzing from behind you and thunking into the t.v.

Daredevil (DTS track) makes fantastic use of the surrounds and creates truly a wide, immersive soundstage.

Tears of the Sun - the last shooting scene (bullets flying everywhere)
I only have Pirates, The Patriot, and the TEX THX Trailer of the above. I'll check 'em out.

This is my favorite clip to use from DTS Demo Disc #5 when I need to demonstrate home theater surround sound. Very family friendly, as well. Also on demo disc #5 is a music video (Steely Dan) that makes nice use of the rear surrounds. Search ebay for "dts demo" in the dvd section and pick up a demo disc. (I have demo discs 3 - 8, and 5 is my favorite, but they're all decent.)

Fast & The Furious DTS (all the race scenes)
Brotherhood of the Wolf 3 disc DTS (beast breaking thru house)
Fight Club (especially the plane breaking apart)
Terminator 3 (when Arnold is walking around w/ casket)
Blade 1 ("Do you have an invitation, cahdoa?.... *CRASH*!!!")

You have one chance to show off your surround sound... what dvd do you put in?

Say you have one shot to show a newbie that surround sound blows away front-only systems and that it's a must-have in any home theater environment. What movie do you put in that is the most convincing, best experience?

(The real story being that I am finally setting up my home theater system and want to prove to the wife that it's worth having those speakers on the wall instead of a picture... ugh.)

I'd go with the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan (DTS). Great demo for the surround speakers, with bullets wizzing all over.

I tried this once . . . and people weren't very kind . . .

http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...hreadid=320929

. . . of course I was a n00b at the time (Unlike a certain 5-year-old "ancient" that I could mention. ) and, looking back, I'm not surprised at whose posts were . . . shall we say . . . less than helpful.

Used to be Private Ryan for me too... but that's now been replaced by the early attack at the beginning of Master & Commander

according to my dts thread, besides the aforementioned U-571, Twister & the Stormchasers were suggested as giving your reciever a workout...

If you're region-free: Hero R3 DTS, Chapter 5 Golden Forest duel.

If you're not region-free, the sparring between Michelle Yeoh and Zhang ZiYi towards the end of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Superbit is pretty good.

Hulk R3 DTS, Avalon R3 DTS, Blade 2 DTS, and U-571. I can't pick just one.

In the past, I used the Moria scene in the FOTR EE. Then I switched to the crane scene when T3 came out. I now use the opening battle in Master and Commander. Its sounds incredible in DTS.
