Terrible idea. Home ownership is a great tax shelter. Owning also builds equity. It beats rental 10 out of 10 times.

Nope, not a terrible idea.

Bushy, there are 2 kinds of poeple
those that should own a home and those that should rent a place.

I'm in the rental half.

Dave99 10-21-02 12:15 PM

Renting would be a good first step. A lot easier to get out of renting a place if all of a sudden if you have money trouble because you had to buy a new coffee can exhaust for your car. You gotta get your priorities in line b-dog. ;)

Why? Can't afford a home yet?

That's the same boat I'm in, and for us it is a good idea to rent as we have no choice. All things equal, ownership is better. It's just we have something unequal (that is, ability to afford it or not).

Don't forget, with a mortgage you/LX will have to pay closing costs and, at selling time, possible agents' fees. Then there's gas, electric, water, sewer, cable, garbage, recycling... all the stuff that Mom and Dad are covering now (for much more than $100/month, I'm willing to bet). These will offset the benefits of any tax shelters for short-term owners, and LX has stated that he will be out of this house in about 2 years, which make it likely that he will not see any of the benefits of ownership, but instead will lose money overall.

grrrah 10-21-02 12:53 PM

like everyone else, I am enjoying this thread.. but I don't want to go back through 13 pages of searching... what kind of "Great" job does LX have? I thought I saw something about The Sports Authority.. isn't that a retail store? He was previously at Walmart wasn't he?

Since he is ripping on us with degrees that don't make much money... Even though I don't get paid that much (relatively), I probably get paid more than LX, and at least I know my job is stable, pay will increase annually, and I can establish this as my career for the rest of my life if I want to. I know I have a lot better chance than LX to buy a place in a couple years, even in this expensive area. What was the pay again?

Oh, right now I am in the rental half as well, but I have a prelude engine if anyone wants to buy it to put in a civic.

I love imports too, but i can't believe people would hide powerful engines in side of a civic when you could just drive the nice lude or integra. But to each his own.

yah but with the civic, you would be able to fold down the back seat in case his little bro ever wakes up and he wants some of his gf.

But, dood! You don't understand, yo! That's why I'm dropping a Ferrari F40 engine in my John Deere! It'll be the ultimate sleeper, dood! I'll be lighting grocery wagons at every light, boyeee!

Civic + B18C1 $$ < Integra + B18C1 $$$

I don't know what the drag coefficent of the Civic or Integra are, but I imagine, that they're not too far off. Especially since we're talking about the hatchback.

Some people just like the styling of the Civic hatchback better than the Integra or Prelude. Like I said, the Civic is also lighter...which is very important in racing. Moreover, it gives them a "sleeper" because not everybody will suspect that they have a better engine than the stock one.

All this talk about a hybrid has given me the hot. Seriously. I want to make one. I don't want to spend the big dollars like others though, so here is what I am looking to get:

I think I'll have to do some body work to make it fit, but this thing should rock the house when it is done. Maybe some shiny news wheels as well.

Make sure you buy some Pirellis. I don't think those plastic tires are gonna last too long.

Once the 1 year probation period is over, LX will become the newest "Other" forum moderator!

But he cant mow the lawn of his home without a gun, otherwise he will have no protection from that random guy who will rob him of his bling without notice.

Notice how LX shows up just long enough to stir the pot then vanishes again? GuessWho kept us updated almost every half hour during his saga.

El Scorcho 10-21-02 02:50 PM

Maybe he got grounded from the computer?

MJKTool 10-21-02 03:26 PM

Or maybe he is busy and not at his computer right now. You know not everyone is glued to this forum 24/7...unlike some...

Since when is working retail (most likely a store in the mall) a good career? Making around $8 an hour is pretty "bunk" if you ask me. Civic might as well be barking for the yack woman. Now that's a career with no period of probation. And "she's a hell of a good cook."

El Scorcho 10-21-02 04:17 PM

Is that a Type-R big wheel?
