Question for all those in the UK

I have been ordering DVD's from regions 2 and
4 for about the last month. I often find
that the Ausie DVD's are cheaper. Question:
If you live in the UK, do you pick up your DVD's locally or import them from Australia because of the cheaper price.
The UK pound must match up well against the
Ausie dollar.

Basically, Import them from anywhere as long as I don't have to buy them here!

DVD'S in Britain are a big time rip-off. How
the hell they expect the format to take
off with the prices they charge i'll
never know.
Personally i buy all my DVD on Region 1,
because they're much cheaper, and of course
the release dates are usually months ahead
of region 2.

I keep a close eye on the high street; some of the shops have surprisingly good special offers at times (e.g. 2 £19.99 DVDs for £25 at Virgin...) but I only actually buuy stuff over here if I know it's as good as, or better than, the US version. Otherwise it's cheap imports all the way...

...why do you all say that region 2 dvds are so bad? ...

It's getting closer in terms of quality of disc now - but if you're really keen, then R1's are normally released first. But some R2 discs are better. I tend to buy the best version that I can. But they are definitely more expensive in the average shop - so I always shop around the Internet stores.

I've had excellent success ordering region 4
DVD's (Ausie) from:
www.chaosmusic.com
Question for anyone: If you live in the UK
will you pay similar prices as the ones that www.play247.com or www.amazon.co.uk charge
if you buy from a street vendor?
If so, I can certainly see how it could be cheaper to just import a region 1 DVD from the U.S.
BTW, how much (typically) is shipping from the U.S. to U.K according to amazon.com and
other American etailers?

With the exchange rate being what it is at the moment, the prices from the US stores are not very much cheaper (if at all) than decent UK stores. The 25% discount pirces at play247 or pre-orders at DVD Street (both with FREE delivery) make the prices very competitive with R1, especially when you take into account delivery/customs.

I've always felt, as far as ordering stuff direct from the U.S vs UK that it's a trade off between price and time. It might be cheaper ordering direct from the U.S but you probably won't get it as soon, especially on pre-orders. All the discs i have pre ordered from play247 and Future Entertainment have arrived on the day of the U.S release. Both their prices are pretty good especially if it's one of those higher priced Special Editions.

therecanbeonlyone : Australian stores I have used are :-
ozdvdwhs.com.au and dvdplanet.com.au . DVDPlanet deducts Oz GST ( Goods & Services Tax ? ) for international orders. I had one disc yesterday for about GBP13.40 delivered. It took about 7 days which I don't consider to be too bad given the time of year.

Hello from your Commonwealth cousin, South Africa! On average, DVD's are cheaper here in S Africa than in the UK! Example, most Disney titles retail for around GBP12.50 and most MGM titles, incl. all the Bonds, retail for about GBP13.95 !! A mate of mine, who is back in S Africa, on holiday from London, was astounded to pick up "The Matrix" for GBP12.00 !!
