Variety:

French splatterfest "Martyrs" offers a few genuine scares early on, but they're quickly washed away by all the blood tossed around by writer-director Pascal Laugier ("House of Voices"). With no apparent goal beyond keeping the ketchup count high, the pic dispenses with its plot -- basically "Hostel," without the laughs -- and turns its two heroines into human pincushions for the talented makeup f/x team. Film should score OK with hardcore gore fans, but others will expect martyrdom for sticking it out until the end. After appealing its original NC-18 rating (very rare in France), Gaul-side Sept. 3 release received an NC-16 tag.

Script replaces Eli Roth's thrill-seeking businessmen with a cult of wealthy savages who torture their captives to provoke a state of Joan of Arc-like grace. When a young girl (Jessie Pham) manages to escape their clutches, she returns 15 years later (now played by Mylene Jampanoi) for revenge, but winds up sending herself and her galfriend (Morjana Alaoui) back to the chopping block. Hell-bent on joining the Splat Pack, helmer Laugier has neither the humor nor the skills to make the pic interesting.

Camera (color), Nathalie Moliavko-Visotzky, Stephane Martin; editor, Sebastien Prangere; music, Seppuku Paradigm; production designer, Jean-Andre Carriere; costume designer, Claire Nadon. Reviewed at UGC Cine Cite Les Halles 3, Paris, Sept. 6, 2008. (Also in Fantasy Filmfest, Germany; Frightfest, London; Toronto Film Festival -- Midnight Madness.) Running time: 99 MIN.

Thanks!

I'll probably wait for the UK version then.

There was a mention of the R1 release in this month's "Horrorhound" magazine.

Does anyone have any specs for the upcoming Canadian release? Mostly wondering if there will be English Subs. Would be nice to have the movie a month early, even though I haven't seen it.

Preliminary info indicates lack of English subtitles (but coming from Paradox Entertainment this means little).

Thanks again Pro-B! :)

I've just been ridiculously impatient for this title. I'll keep my eyes open on the Canadian release next week.

There's a full page ad for the Canadian DVD from Paradox in a recent issue of Fangoria (I think it was on the inside front cover). Fangoria is an English language publication, so I'm not sure why they'd be advertising it there if it's not going to be English-friendly. Stranger things have happened, I guess.

Did the ad list the extras? I'm wondering if it will have the feature-length documentary from the French release.

I don't know about the Canadian release, but the 55min doc will be on the US edition.

The making-of doc on the French release is an hour and a half. The Weinstein bastards must have truncated it for the US release.

Re: Martyrs (Pascal Laugier) BD/DVD

I just stopped by the local Borders and the Martyrs Canadian dvd ad is in Rue Morgue, not Fangoria. Rue Morgue is a Canadian publication. However, I don't doubt that the movie will have English subs... don't know if the extras will, though. The ad didn't mention extras...but it did say the disc streeted yesterday while Amazon says the 31st. Either way, Amazon dropped their price to $19.99 CAD, if anyone is interested.

ah jeesh, -ohbfrank- "typical"

Typical of what? That they truncated it or that I called them bastards?

Giles 03-25-09 02:50 PM

Re: Martyrs (Pascal Laugier) BD/DVD

no I'm just referring to the fact when the Weinsteins were part of Miramax they were infamous as the scissor wielding brothers who cut any and everything to their standards, whether the film was not meeting ratings approval or the film was just too damn long.

dullboy 03-25-09 02:54 PM

Re: Martyrs (Pascal Laugier) BD/DVD

Yeah, from Dragon Dynasty to Dimension to Miramax, they've always seemed to enjoy putting their dirty fingers in anything and everything they find not to their liking.
