The Red Desert (BR/DVD)

I have received word from BFI's Press Officer that Antonioni's Il Deserto Rosso will be released on Blu-Ray/SDVD immediately after their upcoming SALO. Both of those films will receive their international BR premieres through BFI and boast prints freshly telecined from the original negatives in Rome. Also in 2009 BFI are planning to bring up to 15 new releases (catalog favorites in addition) to coincide with their SDVD counterparts. The BDs will also include alternative versions so as to make them more than format upgrades according to the same source.

Ciao,
Pro-B

"Alternative versions?" Does this mean there will be Blu-exclusive extras? Interesting. Excellent news on Il Deserto Rosso. BFI have really been on a roll lately. Now where is Zabriskie Point...

NoirFan:

Here's exactly how everything was worded. I am guessing, just as you are, that this means that the BR discs will be richer.

For those titles we'll be using newly created master materials and offering alternative versions on the same disc so as to make the Blu-ray a more attractive proposition to the consumer than a simple format replacement offering.

I hope this new SDVD release will be worth owning because The Red Desert is my favourite Antonioni's film.

Funny enough, discussing about this disc without having it in hand sounds to me just like playing tennis without a ball.

Now I'm having un-Antonioni-esque feelings: someone DID get what I meant.
Just lame_nting...

Definitely looking forward to finding out more of the catalog releases they are planning. Should be a great time to have a Blu-ray player!

It'll be interesting to see (hear?) how the audio elements fare in this new telecine. I've only ever seen/heard the old Image DVD (terrible on both counts), but I understand it's always sounded quite poor, and that this was made worse on the latest DVD (Madman's?) with the unfortunate and reportedly heavy-handed application of noise reduction.

Region free, presumably? It's mine if it is.

As announced in the SALO thread BFI's output will be ABC-coded.

I wonder if the extras will be in HD, or if they will be presented in PAL SD and thus unplayable on US BR players (similar to the "Black Narcissus" thing).

I'm surprised people don't see this as a big question or issue since there seems to be such an outcry over extra material that isn't ported over from SD releases to HD releases.

I hope BFI takes its potential Region A customer base into consideration as far as the extras are concerned. If the extras are in SD PAL, it'd be nice if they at least placed them on a separate disc so that SD region-free folks could view them that way.

"Seventh Seal" is a good example of an international BR release that I feel was handled properly.

Any word on the MSRP? BFI's DVDs are pretty expensive.

I wonder if this still holds true for "Red Desert", given that "Salo" will now be locked to region B.

Apparently Oppo are working on a Blu-Ray player, which I assume would be region free. So there's hope....

I think I'll be buying that Oppo as long as it plays region free DVDs as well.

Well, a unit that plays BRs and DVDs from all regions, converts PAL to NTSC, and provides quality upconversion would certainly be the holy grail.

Meanwhile it's just too annoying trying to figure out what imported BR material will or won't play on my machine, in part or in full. I suppose I'll cancel my Red Desert BR pre-order and go with the R2 DVD.

I sat out the HD format war but now I'm really wishing it had gone the other way.
