Does anyone own the DVD for "El Caballero Don Quijote - Director's Cut"? If so, I've got a question, the previous (now OOP) release of the DVD had an aspect ratio of 2.35:1, this version (that I'm interested in purchasing) is listed with an aspect ratio of 1.33:1, 4:3. Why the change to full-frame? I did e-mail DVDGO about this and they did say it was 4:3. Any chance it is 4:3 letterbox (meaning non-anamorphic 2.35:1) and not 4:3 full-frame (I've had online places respond incorrectly to me in the past on similar issues, notably Thai/Chinese DVDs)? If "full-frame", think it at least could be "open-matte" and not "pan n scan"?

Hey! Awesome....thanks BusterK! I appreciate you taking the time and going through all the trouble (links and all). Perfect timing too as I was just getting ready to place another order.......now I'll check on this first (and let you guys know). Funny, in my previous ramble, it never occured to me that there might be separate wide- and full-screen releases.

Any canuck order from Spain? I want to order El Lobo and was wondering if there was a customs friendly etailer out there.
|
I was just in Spain and saw a wonderful Angelopoulos box set and a Jacques Rivette box set , both with just Spanish subtitles, unfortunately.

Bump....so what's been happening on the Spanish-language cinema side of things? It seems to me that Spanish-language cinema coverage (in English) is somewhat lacking (at least based on the sites I visit) in comparison to other countries......so I'm at the mercy of my fellow DVDTalkers on this one.
Pro-B has already mentioned in another thread about a Spanish DVD release for Melville's "The Shadow Army". I know that Orwell's "Chimes at Midnight" is also available on Spanish DVD via DVDGO (also stocked at XPloited). How about some recent stuff....anything interesting (any genre is fine) that released in the last eight months (or will be releasing in the next couple of months). I know "Torrente 3" came out with English subs but from what I recall it doesn't seem to promising. Looking at this thread, DVDGO had a sale that started last July. I wonder if they will do the same this year. |
I really liked this film....and the DVD is great as well....

sometime last year I posted some of the ones I was ordering and/or received or maybe it was the brazilian thread. anyway here is my incoming order from dvdgo which I should be receiving sometime next week.
Torrente 3, El Protector: Edición Especial 11,63 eur 1 1 7 Vírgenes 12,92 eur 1 1 Morir en San Hilario 10,34 eur 1 1 El Método 12,89 eur 1 1 El Milagro de P. Tinto 7,75 eur 1 1 Isi/Disi 10,34 eur 1 1 Poniente 4,27 eur 1 1 Romasanta, La Caza de la Bestia: Edición Coleccionista 7,72 eur Some are older but some of the prices were too good to pass up. These are the ones I think I will be getting in a couple of weeks Camaron El Aura El Viento Mortadelo y Filemon nubes de verano (has an R1 release but I detest that company like most of the ones that put out spanish films) Princesas (waiting on Pro-B's review) El Cielo Gira I also agree with you that a lot of spanish film news slack a bit. I'm actually thinking about going to the San Diego or Chicago Latino Film Festival next year, maybe that way I could get some sites or something but its a lot of countries included in that "spanish film" so even one or two would be great. Same with the brazilians. Also, I don't know if anyone is an Arturo Ripstein fan but I really enjoyed El coronel no tiene quien le escriba. HELP! Also, I've always meant to pick up the 7 dvd series La revolucion Cubana from dvdgo but it appears that they are going out of print and I don't want to order a couple of them and get stuck without the rest. I know mexico has this set as well but I could only find it in one of the mexican newspapers bookstore but they won't ship it to the US. Anyone have a clue? I tried ordering from elcorteingles but they are not good at keeping you informed about your order, or even if the items are available or not. |

El metodo is on its way to me, I should get it sometime early next week. El Aura will be on my next order so I will let you know as soon as I received them.

Yes, I can! http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?t=461621 Ciao, Pro-B |
toddly6666, just a clarification if I may, when you asked about "Fragil" above did you mean this movie (according to the image you posted)......or this other movie? I'm just curious because although I know you watch a wide variety of movies, the one you apparently asked about seemed a little curious (unless I'm missing something) of a selection in comparison to what you normally discuss here (not that I've watched either so I couldn't be of help anyway).
Pro-B/BuddhaWake...thanks for the suggestions...I'm definitely interested in a handful of those. Now for an internal debate, order now or wait for a potential Summer Sale down the road (I'm leaning "order now"). While I'm deciding, if anyone has additional suggestions, please chime in. Since you ordered another film by Director Laura Mana, BuddhaWake (or anyone else too) have you seen "Palabras Encadenadas"? I started a thread about it in Movie Talk almost a year ago but it didn't get much feedback. I thought it was a terrific little film and it seems to have been greatly overlooked. Also for those who haven't yet seen it, I'd say do consider "El Septimo Dia" (2004)...there's another thread about it in this forum. |
flixtime, haha, i understand the confusion - yeah i mean the movie FRAGIL with the image i posted and not that Clarisa Flockhart FRAGILE movie...Im very curious to see FRAGIL, but it's gotten poor to mixed reviews on the Spanish sites...I haven't found too many English reviews of it..
The trailer of Fragil is here: http://www.twitchfilm.net/archives/004126.html |
I appreciate the clarification, having watched the trailer now I can see your interest (as opposed to what it appeared to be based on the little info. at IMDb). You've got me curious now too......I'm going to have to consider it for my order...although like you said, the lukewarm reviews might cause me to pass.
Also just a note about "Palabras Encadenadas" which I just mentioned in my previous post, it is also available on R1 DVD (which is what I have). I can't speak as to how the R2 Spain and R1 compare, but I just wanted to clarify that it is available via R1. |
I also have the R1 Palabras encantadas, got through columbia house, and I really enjoyed it as well. As of the moment I have a huge wishlist at dvdgo but also in a lot of other places (a lot of brazilian stuff I want to pick up as elsewhere) so I might wait a bit and see if there is a sale going on in the summer time. Their prices are good enough but the shipping could be hard on the pocket too. In fact, if I find someone in the US that is selling El Aura and Camaron I might order those by themselves and postpone the rest until further down the line.
I never picked on on the confusion based on Fragil because I was going by the spanish titles fragil vs fragiles. It sure does sound interesting, it it goes down in price a bit I might pick it up. As you all could see I like to do a mix of older titles that may be on sale and new releases that way my overal average is lower per dvd. The problem I'm having with my next order is that I want to keep it within a particular budget and pick up 3 definate new releases. Plus I managed to track down that cuban revolution series at elcorteingles but I'm not 100% if I'll pull the trig on it. |
ok. got my package today. As for El metodo, got a chance to watch it tonight and the image is great. A little mutted but it goes with the theme. The sound let me a little dissapointed. I had to increase it a couple (from my standard) of times and play around with the 5.1 and 2 channel. Is a dialogue heavy movie so I'm not expecting a workout but the sound was not very clear in the sense that the dialogue didn't seem to be comming from the center channel and it was more from the front two speakers. I had to turn the subtitles on myself since the dialogue wasn't as loud and clear as I would have liked. So yes it is confirmed, ENGLISH SUBS are available and its grammar and spelling error free unlike this post.
It was a great ride for the first hour, the intensity and pressure kept building and it really had me wanting to know what was going on but it lost some steam in the last third. |
also, question here. what is this and how come i've never seen it listed before?
http://www.dvdgo.com/product~catgid~...del+Montón.htm P.S. no english subs. |
Actually this is a very OLD disc which I believe was OOP for a long time...I would stay away from it as it is hardly worth your trouble (I had an old thread about this film, very much in the style of Bertolucci's early pictures...raw and edgy)...hopefully with all of this talk about celebrating Almodovar this year coming from SONY they would release it.
As I said though....the disc is not worth the 10 Euro. Ciao, Pro-B |
Just a quick note....I checked with DVDGO and - as was the case last year - they will again have the Summer Sale promotion. From what they told me, the start date is going to be July 1st.
Now I just have to finalize what I want to order. I'll probably go for at least 8 items and finish things off in one order (selecting from the titles I mentioned earlier as well as the recent suggestions from BuddhaWake, Pro-B, and toddly6666). |
any idea until when the sale will last? I think last year it lasted for a while. maybe I'll finally pick up some of those titles i've been meaning to pick up.
|
I'd guess that the sale will go - like last year - until the end of August (which would give everyone some breathing room to first recover from the DDD bills). But, just to be sure, I've sent an e-mail to them. It's late evening there so I won't have their reply until tomorrow; I'll post it when it comes.

For fans of Asterix, I recommend picking up the Remastered Asterix In Britain animated movie on DVD from DVDGO. I've seen a lot of the animated asterix movies and they pretty much suck, except for this one. The animation is actually excellent. It seems like a contemporary cell animation film without CGI and it sticks the most to the Asterix comic, even with new stuff thrown in it. This Spanish DVD is the only one that is Anamorphic WITH ENGLISH AUDIO. There are anamorphic French DVDs of many of the Asterix animated movies, but none with English audio or subtitles.

A little off-topic but it would perhaps be of interest to those following this thread...xploitedcinema (and diabolikdvd too) are showing a couple of newly-released R1 DVDs (from the label CasaNegra) for two early 1960's Mexican horror films. I don't know anything about the films or the quality of the discs but according to the tech specs and for $15 each (not including shipping) they might be good deals. The titles are "Curse of the Crying Woman" (1963) and "The Witch's Mirror" (1962). Also, I haven't checked to see if they were previously released in any other region.
