Layer Cake for £6.87 at Amazon.uk

Pretty good deal on the R2 2-disc, for those who have been holding out...

FUUUUUUUUDDDDDGGGGGE: I just paid $22 via a legit UK ebay seller thinking that it would stay in the $20 plus range for a while. I guess I should still hold out on A Very Long Engagement at $31?

Unbelievable! I've kept my eye on this title for some time, and last week found it for 6.99 (pounds) at sendit.com. As their shipping is less than amazon.co.uk, I went with them. Last week CDwow were still selling Layer Cake for either $24.95 or $26.95!

From sendit.com, mine's costing me around $15, which isn't shabby. But this is the kind of great deal that CDwow hasn't been having too much lately. I just can't believe they dropped the price after I bought it elsewhere!

This one. I've used it many times for the best deals around, if they have the DVD you're looking for.

thanks I just ordered it.

I saw it at a local theater last week and it was the first time I had heard of it. I really liked Snatch and Lock Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels and was wondering if anyone can recommend any good UK movies. I also like UK comedies but I dont really know any sites to keep up with UK cinema.

You should check out "Sexy Beast" it is quite good. Can't figure out why that one did not get more attention when it came out.

Ordered this, cost $15.80 or so U.S. Dollars shipped. Good stuff and I like the box art compared to the U.S. movie poster which I'm sure will resemble the U.S Dvd box art when it eventually ships.

For less than the price of parking to see the film last night, I bought the DVD this morning. Ha!

Has anyone (not from R2) had any trouble playing this? My region-free Malata has taken a couple of hundred discs from other regions without ever having a hiccup - but I'm having trouble here...

The disc menus come up as normal, and all pages can be accessed. However, when I try to play the film, the Columbia logo comes on in 2.35:1, but then it jumps to the copyright screen and back to the main menu! I can't access the film via chapter select either.

If there was a region coding issue, wouldn't it just have refused to play the disc?

I opened my Malata paperwork and found the key sequence to "select a region" as opposed to region 0. I've NEVER had to do this, but it didn't work either.

On my upstairs DVD-ROM, set to R2, I could get the film to work. Haven't had a chance to try it on any other codefree players yet.

Anyone else having issues?

No significant issues for me using a Philips 727.

Only concern I had was during the opening credits a few seconds in to the movie, the disc freezes (or perhaps "sticks" might be a better description) but all I had to do was tap the forward button on the remote once and the disc played fine from then on.

I rented this from a local place that has a limited amount of PAL/non-R1 discs a while back and had the same problem on my Malata. I ended up having to rip just the movie portion and throw it on a DVD RW just to watch it. Because of the problem playing it, I was planning on waiting until it got released in R1 to buy it rather than buying the R2.

I can tell you the Malata N996 cannot play the Columbia Tri-Star UK R2 disc of Layer Cake. Even if you set the player to Region 2 (the disc does have RCE) or try to program straight to the movie and bypass the menu(like "Title 4, Chapter 2", etc.) you end up back at the copyright screen. A new form of RCE? Something to do with the freaky "corrupt video data" copy protection? I dunno. The disc does play fine on my Malata 393A (when I set it to R2), so it may be just a few Malata models that can't handle the disc. Which model do you have?

Thanks for the feedback folks! My workmate has the Philips 727 and I was going to ask him to try it tomorrow. Looks like he will be successful!

Luther - my Malata is the 996.

Peep - what files do you need to copy to recordable DVD? And will that actually play on a DVD player, or only on a DVD-ROM?

My Malata is a 520 and the rules of the forum do not allow discussion of circumventing DVD copy protection. I learned the tools to use because my three years old kept trashing their baby Einstein DVD's and I found it much cheaper to buy them but only let the kids near the backups and just keep replacing the backups rather than re-purchasing the discs themselves.

Some disc coying program let you just pull out the movie content rather than the whole menu structure (which is what I did for this movie). It's also what I do for the kids because they just watch the discs straight through and have no need for the menus or extended credit sequences. It also lets me fold 3 or 4 half-hour programs onto the same disc.

I am friend with an owner of a shop, and some of the discs he's been getting from major studios have a warning on the back;

"Will not play on a region free dvd player"

and it held true *EXCEPT* for the Malata 520 for some reason. I'm starting to see this more and more on major releases. I'm not sure how many of you read the fine print but this could be the problem. I ran the tests on a malata, norcent and novi I think. I can take some pic's of the warning and post them if people don't know about these new discs.

While I respect forum rules and will abide by them, I've always been a bit upset by this rule, for the following reasons.

(1) This is an "international" dvd forum. I find many (and I stand to be corrected) non-American users on here, as well as American. The problem for me is we are forced into an "American" mind state as opposed to an "International" one. In Canada for example we pay tax on blank media, and we are allowed a personal backup. Therefore we wouldn't be breaking any law. I understand this forum is run by an American and that this would be illegal in the US, but again in theory it would be nice for people to be allowed to speak on their own countries rules and regulations.

(2) Since this is an "American based" forum, I've never really understood how the MPAA (US based) points fingers around the world at countries for copywrite issues, yet they have this "Berne Act" which basically allows bootlegging within America;

The section of American copyright law known as "The Berne Act" clearly states: films unreleased in the United States, including original version of films altered and/or edited for release in the United States, are not protected by American copyright; thus, they are considered public domain. If a film should become available domestically, it would no longer fall under this act.

Anyhow, long afternoon. Just decided to rant a bit. lol

The way I see it, it's not a copyright issue, it's a The Digital Millennium Copyright Act issue - and I'm OK abiding by any rule that DVDtalk sets regarding it.

Personally, I feel that if I bought a DVD, I should be able to re-encode and burn it without menus or forced previews if I so choose - but the US government does not agree. Whatever.

Here is some good news for those having trouble playing the R2 release.
R1 release is coming at the end of August. It appears to have all the same features.

This is the second DVD that doesn't play on my Malata N996. The first one (with the same symptom) is Stuart Little R1.
