Dead Man's Shoes (UK DVD) -Highly Recommended
I wasn't too keen getting the disc as I'd hated the director's previous (Once Upon A Time in The Midlands). However, there was hope as I'd loved his Twenty Four Seven and A Room for Romeo Brass
I loved Dead Man's Shoes. Surely in my top few British films in the last 5 years. Paddy Considine is completely rivetting and although the film is brimming with violence it is very moving. I particulaly liked the Toto le héros* ending
If you appreciate Alan Clarke's (Scum, Elephant) style of filiming (with a bit of Arvo Pärt and other great music) that'll give you some idea of what to expect.
Johnny Vegas designed that film poster. Strange but true. I don't think the poster does the film too many favours but Meadows seems to like it.

*Toto le héros is on DVD in France incidentally.

Agreed. Dead Man's Shoes is one of those movies that feels like a punch to the stomach...in a good way....kinda. Anyway, worth tracking down. Has anyone seen any word of this getting a US theatrical release? I'd have no problem supporting this at the box office.

Love this film. I saw it at the Toronto Film Festival with Paddy Considine and Shane Meadows in attendance. Great dvd as well. I also recommend Meadow's "A Room For Romeo Brass." Another great film and dvd with a fantastic supporting performance from Considine.

I'd actually compare it to Mad Max in that it's not actually nearly as violent as you might think from the ads or reputation (look at that slasher film quote on the poster/UK dvd cover) -- there's much more implied than actually shown. Excellent movie though.

The only reason I could think someone should wait for the region 1 is if it offers subtitles or closed captioning. The region 2 does not have either of these options and the dialogue can be very hard to follow for an ugly American. Otherwise, highly recommended for lovers of the genre(revenge flick).

dialogue can be hard to follow even for someone who has always lived in england... anyway, the films a cracker for its story, and its a much more accurate (although clearly not entirely real) representation of british life, personalities, and accents.

'dead mans shoes' is a good story, greatlead performance form paddy considine, but still a little contrived and a little too close to that whole 'lock stock' bullshit were still going through a decade after it should have faded away.
